Population and language The official language is English The
capital city of England is London. Population approximately 50
million people. The currency is called pound, pence Monarchy means
that they have a royal family. Religion: Protestants, Catholics,
Buddhist, Hindu, Muslims, Jews, Atheists and Greek Orthodox. The
British are English, Scottish, Welsh, West Indian, Scandinavians,
Indians and Pakistanis.

Stonehenge The name Stonehenge come from the Old English word
stan hengist which means "hanging stones". Stonehenge is expected
to be built over a 2000 year period, beginning about 5000 years
ago. They are built as two circles. It has some religious meaning
that is not known why Stonehenge looks the way it does.

Big Ben Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell of the clock
at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. The clock
tower is very famous. The clock was finished being built on April
10th 1858. When the time stroke twelve the bells played twelve
times.

Houses of Parliament Houses of Parliament is today headquarters
for the British government, but was originally the residence for
the British royal family. This ended in 1547 (King Edward VI), and
the building was converted into the home of contemporary
government. Government debates are open to the public and you can
listen to the prime minister of England. Current Prime Minister of
England David Cameron was elected in 2010.

Queen Elizabeth II and Buckingham Palace Elizabeth II was born
in 1926 She succeeded the throne in 1952. She married Philip and
got four children (Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward). Charles is
the eldest and is the first in line to become king. He has two
sons, William and Harry. Queen Elizabeth II lives in Buckingham
Palace, London. A film was made about her life. It is called The
Queen and Helen Mirren played Elizabeth. This year 2011, Elizabeth
will turn 85 years old and her grandson William will get married to
Kate Middleton.

Madame Tussauds Madame Marie Tussauds was the founder of the
cabinet in 1884. She was good at making sculptures of clay. Inside
the house there are wax figures of celebrities. They look very
real. One doll takes more than a year to complete.

School uniforms Many children in England have to wear a school
uniform. Some schools are very strict and they have to wear a
shirt, tie, blazer, trousers, skirt and sometimes even a small hat.
Girls may only have a pony tail, no perfume, make-up or
jewelleries. The school uniform has a certain colour and style and
of course you will se the schools logo and name. There are schools
in England now that allows regular clothes like you wear.

English Bobbies Bobby is slang for Police and has its roots
from 1820. Bobby is named after the founder Sir Robert Peel. The
ordinary bobby is a recognized figure with a helmet.

English Football Football comes from Britain. There have been
games like football since the 1300s. Football was forbidden in the
1600s because there were no rules and people got badly hurt. The
game as we know today was formed in 1863. There were 14 rules and
these are still used today. Two famous clubs in England is
Manchester United and Liverpool football club. David Beckham is one
of the most famous football players from England.

Queen! Send her victorious, Happy and glorious, Long to reign over
us God save the Queen! Rule Britannia Rule, Britannia! Britannia,
rule the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. The
Gunpowder Plot Remember, remember The Fifth of November Gunpowder
Treason and Plot I see of no reason Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
