A LOOK AT THE 2018 SEASON

NINE ON THE LINEOn offense, the Buckeyes return nine lettermen along the offensive line, including two-year starters in senior tackle Isaiah Prince and junior guard Michael Jordan. Two additional starters who split time at guard also return: Demetrius Knox, a fifth-year senior, and Branden Bowen, a fourth-year junior. The pair started eight and six games, respectively, last year with Knox taking over after Bowen was injured. Returning lettermen on the line include fifth-year seniors Brady Taylor and Malcolm Pridgeon, fourth-year junior Joshua Alabi and true sophomore Thayer Munford.

TWO 1,000-YARD RUSHERS Running back is also a position of strength that boasts two 1,000-yard rushers: J.K. Dobbins, who started every game in 2017 as a true freshman and set the school record for a freshman with 1,403 yards; and Mike Weber, the every-game starter as a true freshman in 2016 when he rushed for 1,096 yards.

At quarterback, the transfer of fourth-year junior Joe Burrow to LSU leaves Dwayne Haskins as the only returning signal caller with game experience. Tate Martell has a year at scout team under his belt and he battled for playing time this spring.

Junior Rashod Berry and sophomore Luke Farrell have tight end experience. They’ll be joined by sophomore Jake Hausman and talented freshman Jeremy Ruckert in the competition to replace 29-game starter Marcus Baugh.

PRINCE

Urban Meyer officially opens his seventh fall camp as head coach at Ohio State, and his 17th as a collegiate head coach, on Friday, August 3 on the outdoor fields of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Meyer will welcome 47 returning lettermen from the 2017 team that won the 36th Big Ten championship in school history and capped a 12-2 season with a 24-7 victory over No. 8 USC in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

The returning lettermen include 22 on defense, 21 on offense and all four specialists (K Sean Nuernberger, P Drue Chrisman, LS Liam McCullough and KO Blake Haubeil). Ohio State loses a total of 19 letterman from last season, seven on offense and 11 on defense. The losses from last year – eight starters on defense and four on offense – are considerable with multi-year captains and legends such as quarterback J.T. Barrett, center Billy Price and defensive end Tyquan Lewis all having graduated and three talented juniors electing to forego their senior seasons: defensive end Sam Hubbard, linebacker Jerome Baker and Denzel Ward. All six of those players are in NFL training camps with Price and Ward first-round NFL Draft picks of the Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns, respectively.

A DEEP WR UNITSeven lettermen and all the starters return at receiver, including fifth-year performers Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon and Terry McLaurin, and the leading returning receiver, junior K.J. Hill (56 receptions in 2017). Dixon led the team with eight touchdown catches. Campbell was second with 40 receptions and McLaurin was third in both receptions (29) and touchdowns (six).

Additionally, three more players – Austin Mack, Binjimen Victor and C.J. Saunders – each caught at least 17 passes for more than 220 yards and an eighth receiver – Demario McCall – is coming off a red-shirt year as a sophomore but in limited time has already produced six 20-plus-yard plays from scrimmage. As a unit, the 2018 receivers had a combined 214 receptions for 3,002 yards and 31 touchdowns. No group of receivers in Ohio State history has ever been more productive.

BOSA, JONES & CO. The defense figures to be led for a second consecutive year by a talented defensive line that loses some depth at end but may be even better inside with three top tackles coming into the program this year. Nick Bosa, a first-team AFCA All-American and the Big Ten Conference’s Smith-Brown defensive lineman of the year, is the leader of this unit that returns eight lettermen, including two-year starting tackle Dre’mont Jones, and that combined for 43 tackles-for-losses totaling 178 yards.

A pair of considerably talented defensive ends – junior Jonathan Cooper and sophomore Chase Young – will gang up with Bosa for an enviable trio on the outside. Meanwhile, plenty of depth and talent returns (and arrives) at tackle in support of Jones. Juniors Robert Landers, Jashon Cornell and Davon Hamilton all played extensively in 2017 with sophomores Haskell Garrett and Malik Barrow, and red-shirt freshman Jerron Cage also returning. This group will be joined by three highly touted players from the 2018 recruiting class: juco transfer and early enrollee Antwuan Jackson, early enrollee Tommy Togiai and the No. 1 DT recruit in the nation form the 2018 class: Taron Vincent.

LOTS OF LBSThe linebacker position is intriguing. The unit lost two key starters, but sophomore Tuf Borland earned nine starts in the middle last year and fifth-year senior Dante Booker has seven career starts on the outside. Borland suffered an ankle area injury during the spring and will be out for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, junior Malik Harrison had over 300 snaps on defense last year, including 73 vs. Penn State, and he starred in his first career start with six tackles vs. Michigan State. Juniors Keandre Jones and Justin Hilliard, and sophomores Baron Browning and Pete Werner, have all cut their teeth successfully on special teams and will make this a position group to watch this spring and fall.

DBS IN RELOAD MODE The secondary, which has produced five first-round NFL Draft picks the last three NFL drafts, is in reload mode. Two starters return – juniors Jordan Fuller at safety and Damon Arnette at cornerback – and second-year Buckeyes Kendall Sheffield and Jeffrey Okudah are two talented Texans returning at cornerback. Key will be finding the second safety to line up opposite Fuller.

ROAD WARRIORS! OHIO STATE NO. 1 IN “AWAY” WINS Nationally, Ohio State is tied for the fewest losses in the nation – 8 – since Urban Meyer took over and the 73 wins during his tenure are second-most. And digging a little deeper into these numbers reveals some additional impressive stats, like a nation’s-best .836 winning percentage in all road games – true road games and neutral site games – and the fewest losses in true road games, plus rankings of No. 2 nationally in road victories and No. 3 in total “away” game victories.

TOUCHDOWN BUCKEYES!Ohio State’s offense has produced more offensive touchdowns than every major school in the country except two over the last six seasons. Ohio State is also one of only three schools to score over 400 touchdowns from scrimmage in that time. Ohio State’s 410 offensive touchdowns are 100 more than the next closest Big Ten Conference team’s total.

OHIO STATE NO. 1 IN DEFENSIVE TDSHere’s a big splash: In the wake of Ohio State having the third-most offensive touchdowns from scrimmage – 410 – during the past six seasons, Ohio State’s defense checks in with the most defensive scores over the past six years: 25. That total includes 17 “pick-sixes” and eight fumbles returned for touchdowns. Ohio State ranks sixth among Power 5 programs with a total of 30 kick return and defensive touchdowns.

OHIO STATE RUSHING: BEST. DECADE. EVER! Ohio State is on a rushing roll! The program is in the midst of its best decade ever in terms of 1,000-yard rushers, in terms of leading the Big Ten in rushing and in terms of yards per carry average. And the potential to add to those numbers this year is great with Ohio State’s returning running back duo of Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins. Here’s why: • Mike and J.K. are the first set of Ohio

State running backs to enter a season with each already owning a 1,000-yard rushing campaign (Braxton Miller and Ezekiel Elliott did in 2015, but Braxton was a QB);

• The duo will be vying to become only the second set of Buckeye running backs to each gain 1,000-yards rushing in the same season, and the third Buckeye duo overall (Archie Griffin & Pete Johnson in 1975; and Carlos Hyde and QB Braxton Miller in 2013); and

• They’ll be looking to extend the school record for consecutive seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher to seven.

IT’S CALLED “FANDEMONIUM” Want fan support? Got fan support! Ohio State led the nation in “total fan attendance” last season – all fans at home, away and neutral site games – and it also led the nation in total home attendance. And excluding bowl games, Ohio State was also the most watched team on the TV networks (ABC/ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, CBS, FOX, and FS1) during the regular season and conference title game weekends.

GRINCH & TAVER JOIN STAFFThere are two new coaches on the staff: the new 10th assistant coach rule brought in Alex Grinch as the 10th assistant as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach. The departure of Kerry Coombs to the NFL’s Tennessee Titans led to the return of Taver Johnson as cornerbacks coach and special team’s coordinator. Johnson was an assistant at Ohio State from 2007 through 2011 previously.
