2006 SEASON OUTLOOK

Senior Katie Card has notched 28 goals in the last two seasons, andscored 12 goals against Canada in January.

Feature a new coach with an Olympic attitude, combined with anexperienced senior class and a pair of returning All-Americans, andthe prospects for the 2006 California women’s water polo team

definitely start to look good.The Golden Bears will be striving for a spot in this year’s eight-team

NCAA Tournament and have brought in former United States men’sOlympic coach Richard Corso to help Cal vie for a position among thenation’s elite. With a wealth of experience at the highest levels of nationaland international water polo, Corso will be cultivating the senior class ofAllison Gold, Katie Card, Breana Allison, Brittani Llorente, LaurenMcGee and Holly Farlin – plus junior All-American Elsie Windes andthe rest of an eager young Bear squad that is ready to flourish under thedirection of a world-class coach.

“I think it will be important for our team to take on the sport as anacademic discipline,” explained Corso. “The key for us will be tactics,technique, fitness and psychological preparation. Our players need tolearn how to be students of the game. If we can do that, we will put ourselvesin a position to qualify for the NCAAs and earn a medal.”

An honorable mention All-America last year after a stellar performanceduring the MPSF Tournament, Gold led the Bears with nine goals in thefour tournament matches at Spieker Aquatics Complex. An outstandingoutside shooter, she was second on the team in scoring last season with44 goals and was Cal’s leading scorer in 10 of 28 matches. Gold enters herfinal year with 92 career goals.

Card is another talented driver who is a strong offensive player and one

of the team’s top swimmers on the counterattack. She scored 17 goals asa sophomore, 11 goals last season and 12 goals in six exhibition matchesagainst Canada in January. Allison is considered a top two-meter defender

Senior Lauren McGee is an offensive force at two-meters and wasfourth on the team in scoring last season with 22 goals.

Senior Breana Allison is considered one of Bears’ top two-meterdefenders and has 29 career goals.

Brittani Llorente scored 21 goals as a junior, including four goalsduring the MPSF Tournament and two goals in the Bears’ victoryover Long Beach State.

Undoubtedly the Bears’ most decorated player is Windes, a two-timeAll-American and a member of the USA Senior National Team. She led Calin scoring with 51 goals last season, earning third-team All-America,second-team All-MPSF and MPSF All-Tournament honors. Windesrecorded five goals during the MPSF Tournament, including a pair of goalsin the fifth-place victory over Long Beach State. As a freshman, she earnedhonorable mention All-America accolades – Cal’s first true freshman toever be selected as an honorable mention All-American – as well as second-team All-MPSF honors, and was a member of the MPSF All-FreshmanTeam. Windes has already tallied 84 goals in two seasons.

Sophomores Vanessa Lindsey and Molly Hayes will be counted on forcontinued production after scoring 12 and 11 goals, respectively, last yearas true freshmen. Lindsey is one of the Bears’ most improve playersoffensively at two-meters, while Hayes is a top offensive driver. Fellowsophomores Katya Eadington and Rebecca Dreyfuss and redshirtfreshman Paige Lorenz will also be in the running for increased playingtime this season.

Defending the goal for Cal this year will be 6-3 sophomore HeatherStuart, who competed in nine matches last season as a true freshman,recording 36 saves. Stuart has taken over the Bears’ full-time goalie dutiesand has thrived, impressing the Cal coaching staff with her improvementin all aspects of her game. The Bears have an impressive back-up at goaliein true freshman Lauren Burke, who was an All-CIF goalie at LosAlamitos High School and is a member of the USA Junior National Team.

Cal has a pair of true freshmen field players who already have shownthey are ready to be immediate contributors. Two-meter standout StephanieSchnugg has performed well in early season competition. A member ofthe USA Junior National Team, Schnugg is the daughter of Peter Schnugg,who was a standout water polo player at Cal, leading the Bears to the 1973national title and earning All-America and NCAA Player of the Yearhonors. Two-meter defender Melissa Wheeler is the Bears’ other topnewcomer, tallying 11 goals in six exhibition matches against Canada andproviding speed on the counterattack.

“Every time the team comes to the pool they are improving,” said Corso.“This group is working real hard. We are not talking about being good thisseason – we are talking about being great. We are looking to overachieve.”

CAL COACHING STAFFnation’s premier high school squad. Since 1986, Harvard-Westlake waterpolo teams had combined to win 40 league championships, two CIF titlesand seven CIF silver medals. Additionally, 82 Harvard-Westlake student-athletes were named to All-America squads. Corso was named CIF Coachof the Year four times and California Coach of the Year in 1992. He alsoserved as Harvard-Westlake’s Associate Director of Admissions.

“We are ecstatic to have attracted an individual of Rich’s talent andaccomplishments,” said Cal Athletic Director Sandy Barbour. “He has atremendous record of success at the highest levels of the sport. He also trulyunderstands our mission at Cal. I am confident that our women’s waterpolo program will now take its place among our menu of successfulintercollegiate athletic programs.”

Corso began his head coaching career at Yale, where he led a club-varsitysquad, and had previous coaching stops at UCLA, where he was assistantmen’s swimming and water polo coach, and at Stanford. During his 10 yearsat UCLA, Corso helped the men’s swim team to an NCAA runner-upfinish in 1981 and an NCAA title in 1982, and an NCAA runner-up finishin men’s water polo in 1979.

Taking over as the United States National Team coach following the1992 Olympics, Corso inherited a squad that had lost eight of 13 members.He brought a new level of collaboration with the United States OlympicCommittee to the sport, and emphasized the importance of sport science,

sports psychology andcomputer-video tapeanalysis that wasdemonstrated to all of theUSA water polo coaches.Corso led his 1996Olympic team to withinone goal of the medalround in Atlanta, losing togold-medalist Spain. Hisenergy, preparation,commitment andprofessionalism will havea lasting influence onAmerican water polo foryears to come.

A native of Queens,New York, Corso swamand played water polo atSouthern ConnecticutUniversity, earning abachelor’s degree inphysical education in1977. He then completedhis master’s inkinesiology at Cal StateNorthridge in 1982, andearned a second master’sdegree in coaching sciencefrom Moscow StateUniversity in 1999. Corsoand his wife, Catherine,have two children,daughters Meredith andMeghan.

RICHARD CORSOHead CoachFirst Year

One of the most highly respected andsuccessful water polo coaches in the world hasnow joined the Golden Bear family.

Richard Corso, who has served as head coachfor both the United States Men’s Olympic Teamand the Canadian Men’s National Team, was

selected in August to be the new mentor for the University of Californiawomen’s water polo program. Corso not only brings with him a superiorknowledge of the sport of water polo, he possesses a competitive attitudethat is sure to get the most out of his student-athletes.

“The opportunity to coach at the world’s premier public university, andto work with student-athletes that are ranked in the top 10 of all DivisionI schools is an Olympic coach’s dream,” said Corso. “Cal’s teams fostera special culture that values academics and athletic success.”

One of water polo’s most innovative thinkers in terms of training andmatch tactics, Corso’s creed is defensive, attacking water polo. He servedas the United StatesMen’s Olympic Teamhead coach from 1992 to1996, leading the UnitedStates to a seventh-placefinish at the 1996 games inAtlanta and a gold medalat the 1995 Pan AmericanGames. The 1996Olympic team includedcurrent Cal men’s coachKirk Everist, plus otherformer Bear standoutsGavin Arroyo, TroyBarnhart, Chris Humbertand Chris Oeding.

Prior to assuming hisrole with Team USA,Corso served as headcoach of the CanadianNational Team, whichfinished fourth at the 1991Pan American Games. Healso gained internationalexperience as the headcoach of the USA NationalJunior Team (1984 to1988), and as goalkeepercoach for the 1984 silvermedal-winning and 2004Olympic teams.

Most recently, Corsohad served as head of theHarvard-Westlake SchoolAquatic Program in LosAngeles from 1986through 2005. In that role,he was responsible forvirtually all aspects of the

SERELA KAYAssistant CoachFirst Year

Serela Kay, a former standout collegiatewomen’s water polo player, and assistant coachfor USA Water Polo’s Future’s National Team,is in her first season as an assistant women’swater polo coach for the University of California.

Kay, 27, comes to Berkeley with 17 years ofwater polo experience, both as a player and a coach. With the USWPFuture’s National Team, she is responsible for implementing the selectionprocess that whittled 150 athletes down to a 40-member team in preparationfor international competition, and ultimately the development of futureSenior National Team players.

Prior to working with USA Water Polo, Kay was the director and seniorhead coach of the Santa Barbara Water Polo Foundation from September2004-August 2005. She was also an assistant men’s and women’s waterpolo coach at Princeton from July 2002 through August 2004, and wasnamed USA Water Polo Women’s Elite Northeast Zone Coach of the Yearin 2003.

As an athlete, Kay was a four-year starter and team captain as a senior,leading UCLA to National Collegiate titles in 1997, 1998 and 2000. Shewas a member of the USA Junior National Team from 1995-97 as well,helping Team USA to a gold medal at the 1996 Junior Pan American Gamesin Havana, Cuba.

Kay graduated from UCLA in 2000 with a degree in psychology, witha specialization in business and administration. She received a Master ofSport Science in Sport Management degree from the United States SportsAcademy in 2004.

MELANIE vonHARTITZSCHVolunteer Assistant CoachFirst Year

Former Cal water polo standout MelanievonHartitzsch begins her first season as avolunteer assistant coach for the Golden Bearsafter serving as the team’s assistant coach in2002. Bringing a wealth of experience to the Calprogram after competing for the Bears from their

inaugural varsity water polo season in 1996 to 1999, vonHartitzsch helpedCal to three national runner-up finishes and a combined 117-27 record(.813) as a player.

A three-year team captain in water polo, vonHartitzsch was also a three-time All-MPSF selection, and a second-team All-American and team MVPas a senior in 1999. She finished her Cal career with 113 goals and was amember of the Bears’ water polo club team that won the Senior NationalChampionship in the summer of 1998. As a freshman, vonHartitzschbegan her Cal athletic career as a member of the women’s swim team, beforeswitching over to water polo.

vonHartitzsch was the head girl’s water polo coach at Miramonte HighSchool in Moraga, Calif. in 2001 and 2002, and was the coach of the GoldenBear Water Polo Club in the summer of 2001.

After earning her undergraduate degree in interdepartmental studies,with a focus in human motivation, in 1999, vonHartitzsch went on to earna Master’s degree from the Cal School of Education in a program calledAthletes and Academic Achievement. While completing her Master’s,vonHartitzsch also worked for the Cal Athletic Study Center until Mayof 2002.

NICK FOLKERStrength and Conditioning CoachThird Year

Nick Folker enters his third season asCalifornia’s strength and conditioning coach. Agraduate from the University of Hawaii (businessdegree), Folker brings unique strength andconditioning experience after swimming underand working with the Rainbows’ head coach Sam

Freas. Folker, from Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, competed for SouthAfrica’s national team in several world-class events such as the 2000Olympic Games, 1999 World University Games, 2001 WorldChampionships and 2001 Goodwill Games (World All-Star Team). Withthe Golden Bears, Folker’s duties include overseeing the team’s weight anddryland programs, as well as guiding the team in its nutritional requirements.
