CALIFORNIA Golden Bears

2009 SEASON OUTLOOK

With a solid core of returners and a bright freshmen class of eight recruits, the California men’s gym-

nastics team looks to have a solid foundation for the upcoming 2009 season. Although the Golden Bears lost eight letterwinners from the 2008 season – including fi ve-time NCAA champion Tim McNeill, who is help-ing coach this year’s team as a graduate intern – the team returns nine letterwinners and welcomes seven newcomers.

“It is always the goal is to be competing the last day of the year in the fi nals of the NCAA Championships,” Weiner said. “We need to see if we can be a good enough team together to be one of the fi nal six teams and give ourselves again the chance to have a shot at winning the championship. Now, having said that, we lost a lot, but we also have a lot back.”

The talented senior class of four gymnasts – Kyle Brady, Kyson Bunthuwong, Jus-tin Franklin and Evan Roth – will provide

leadership and depth for the Bears. Brady, who is a three-year letterwinner and is in his fi rst year at Cal’s Boalt Hall School of Law, joins the team to close out his col-legiate eligibility. Franklin joined the squad last season as a junior and his season best score came in the upset over Penn State (March 15), with a 14.150, and the Vallejo, Calif., native is hoping to add fl oor and vault to his repertoire in 2009.

Captaining the squad this year are Kyson Bunthuwong and Roth. Kyson Bunthuwong, who will return to the all-around for Cal, excels at both pommel horse, on which he is a two-time All-American. Roth had the team’s best result of the year on vault with a 16.150 at the NCAA team qualifi er (April 17). Weiner notes that Roth has matured since coming to Cal and that he has the ability be an NCAA ring and vault fi nalist this season.

Some of Weiner’s plans for the team hinge on the health of junior Bryan del Castillo.

He was the 2006 junior national champion and an extremely talented gymnast – es-pecially on high bar but has been limited by injuries.

“Injuries limited Bryan to just one meet last year and that hurt us,” Weiner commented. “Now, he is still is not 100 percent just yet, but if he can give us what we hope he can, then we should be fi ne on most events.”

The squad’s second junior Daniel Geriis looking to compete on parallel bars, high bar, pommel horse and vault. He notched his career high of 14.200 on pommel horse Jan. 26 at the Stanford Open to lead the Bears to victory on that event.

Sophomore Kyle Bunthuwong was a key contributor as a true freshman and will compete all-around this year for the Bears. He had the team’s highest marks of the season on fl oor with a 15.150 at the Stanford Open (Jan. 26).

“The nucleus of our team will be the all-arounders, and that’s Kyson and Kyle Bunthuwong,” Weiner said.

Sophomore Eric Haeussler is Cal’s standout on the fl oor-exercise team and boasts one of the most diffi cult routines in the nation on high bar. Redshirt freshman Michael del Junco has impressed the team with his development and skills on parallel bars and pommel horse.

Weiner signed eight freshmen to his recruiting class including the No. 1 recruit in the nation in Glen Ishino. Ishino brings a lengthy resume to Cal, competing at the 2008 Pan American Gymnastics Union Individual Event Championships, taking second the 2007 Junior Olympic Nationals in the all-around, and earning a spot on the U.S. Junior National team at the 2007 U.S. Championships after taking second in the all-around and fi nishing fi rst on rings.

“I’m thrilled with [Glen] because not only is he really talented, but he’s got a great work ethic. So, he becomes a big, important part of our nucleus,” Weiner said. “We also bring in seven outstanding freshmen this year, many of whom we hope will make contributions this season.”

Nic Blair out of Kernersville, N.C., is a strong gymnast who is expected to make the pommel horse team. Weiner hopes for freshman Daniel Culpepper to help the Bears on fl oor and vault. Another freshman looking to make an impact is Jacob Jizrawi – a local product out of San Rafael, Calif., who trained at Golden Bear Gymnastics in high school. Freshman Jim Kerry is expected to help the Bears on fl oor and high bar and build upon other events. Raion Sabolooks to make the high bar lineup this year. Michael Salipante looks to be a regular on the vault team.

ALL-AROUNDThe Bunthuwong

brothers will be Cal’s top two all-arounders, and they look to excel on all events. Both Kyson and Kyle com-peted in the all-around several times in 2008 with Kyle winning his fi rst collegiate all-around title Feb. 16 in the victory at Ohio State. Kyson won the all-around in the defeat of Stanford (Jan. 19) and notched the team’s highest all-around score of 2008 in the upset of Penn State (March 15) with a 90.200. Ishino should also compete all-around.

SCHEDULEThe Bears host just two home meets –

Stanford on Jan. 16 in the season opener and Ohio State on March 6. Cal will see some of the nation’s top gymnastics pro-grams multiple times at such meets as the Pacifi c Coast Classic and the Gold Country Classic.

“It’s good for the team to compete else-where because it helps prepare us for the MPSF and NCAA Championships, which will not be on our home fl oor,” Weiner said. “The Ohio State meet will be very important as it is our last home meet and the Buckeyes will be a championship caliber team.”

PARALLEL BARSCal will once again

boast one of the top, if not the top, paral-lel bars teams in the country. Last season, the Bears’ p-bars team spent all 11 weeks of the season in the No. 1 spot in the national rankings. Although they will be without the skills of McNeill, Cal returns two Bears who were in the NCAA fi nals on parallel bars – Kyson Bunthuwong and Brady. Haussler, Geri, Kyle Bunthuwong and Ishino will also add depth and talent to the rotation.

HIGH BARThe h-bar lineup will

depend on del Castillo, whom Weiner notes is “amazing” on high bar. Kerry has the potential to be included in the rotation and could become the Bears’ top contender on the bar. It is another very good event for Haeussler, who has one of the most diffi cult routines in the country. The all-arounders will fi ll out the remaining spots.

FLOOR EXERCISEWeiner is looking to

add some newcomers to the mix this season. “Jim Kerry has the potential to be very good on floor and give us extra depth,” Weiner noted. Roth will become a permanent fi xture in the lineup after competing six times on the even in 2008 and notching a career best of 14.850 at Stanford (March 8). Haeussler will also return to his starting role on fl oor and will be joined by the all-arounders, who will fi ll in the holes.

POMMEL HORSEWhile the Bears will

be without three-time pommel horse NCAA champion McNeill, Cal spent much of the 2008 season ranked in the top five of pommel horse teams. Weiner is looking to Kyson Bunthuwong, Ishino, Franklin, Geri and del Castillo to perform strongly and serve as Cal’s core on the event. Blair is also expected to make the pommel horse team.

RINGSRoth and Brady

will combine with the all-arounders for the mainstays of the rings team, an event which Weiner hopes the Bears can see some improvement on this season. Brady scored his 2008 season high on rings in the team qualifi ers at NCAAs with a 15.550. Del Castillo can also contribute high scores on rings if he is healthy.

VAULTCal looks to put a

strong team of con-tenders together with the a l l -arounders again providing the base. Freshman Mi-chael Salipante has a chance to make the vault lineup, according to Weiner. Junior Daniel Geri, who did not compete once on vault last year, has added a vault to his repertoire. Eric Haeussler will return to the fl oor after competing at every meet on the apparatus in 2008.

HEAD COACH

Head coach Barry Weiner has led Cal to two team national championships (1997 and 1998), 12 top-10 national fi nishes (including a seventh-place fi nish last season) and 13 individual national championships (including Tim McNeill’s pommel horse and parallel bars titles last year).

BARRY WEINER Head Coach • 18th Year at Cal

Largely credited with developing the University of California men’s gymnastics program into one of the nation’s fi nest, Barry Weiner led the Golden Bears to national championships in 1997 and 1998. He has had a total of nine Top 5 national fi nishes, adding another spectacular season with a fi fth-place fi nish in 2008. He has also coached 13 NCAA individual championships in his 15 seasons at Cal. The ninth-12th

individual championships during Weiner’s regime were Tim McNeill, who earned three NCAA titles on pommel horse and two on parallel bars.

Last season, Weiner was named the Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to a 7-4 regular-season record and a third-place fi nish at the MPSF Championships.

The results of Weiner’s hard work and dedication fi rst paid dividends in ’97 when he was named National Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to a perfect 17-0 regular season and the team’s fi rst NCAA team title since 1975. Weiner then outdid himself the

next year, as Cal swept through the entire ’98 season without a loss en route to its second-consecutive team championship. Following that season, Weiner was named Mountain Pacifi c Sports Federation Coach of the Year for the third time (he won the award for the fourth time in 2004) and National Coach of the Year for the second straight campaign. Including the 16-1 overall record of 2004, Weiner’s career record stands at an impressive 223-67-1 (.769) spanning over the last fi fteen years.

Weiner took the reins of the men’s gym-nastics program in 1992 after Cal’s worst-ever 1-18 season in ’91. Under his guidance, Cal rebounded to post a 15-13 dual meet record, placing third in the conference and reaching the NCAA Regionals, where the team managed a seventh-place fi nish. Six in-

dividuals from that squad qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships that year, including All-American Jason Bertram.

Before arriving at Cal in September 1991, Weiner maintained a lengthy as-sociation with the United States Junior National Gymnastics Program. Over an 11-year period, he has coached 15 Junior National Team members,

including two Junior National all-around champions.

He most recently coached the U.S. Junior National Team against Hungary in 1988 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He also coached the Junior Pan Aaron Floyd, a former Golden Bear student-athlete, was a captain and three-time Academic All-American. Head coach Barry Weiner has led Cal to two national championships (1997 and 1998), nine Top 10 national fi nishes (including a seventh-place fi nish last season) and 11 individual national championships (including Tim McNeill’s pommel horse and parallel bars titles last year).

He also coached the Junior Pan American Team in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1987 and was a U.S. coach at international competitions in England and Hungary. Weiner was also selected as a coach for the 2000 Olympic Team. The personal coach of numerous state and regional champions, Weiner has coached several athletes who are currently attending schools across the nation. His for-mer charges include Cal gymnastics alumni Evan Richman and Scott Green.

On the competitive level, Wiener was a two-time MVP at Temple University from 1968-70. A 1968 NCAA event fi nalist in the parallel bars and fl oor exercise, he helped Temple fi nish fourth in the country in ’68 and led the Owls to a third-place national fi nish in 1970. Weiner also earned gold medals at the 1968 Maccabiah Games in the fl oor exercise and horizontal bar.

A native of Philadelphia, he earned a bach-elor of science degree from Temple in 1970. He is single and resides in El Sobrante.

Barry Wiener cheers on the Bears at the 2008 NCAA Championships.

ASSISTANT COACHING STAFF

AARON FLOYD Assistant Coach • 4th Year at Cal

Aaron Floyd joined the Golden Bear coaching staff four years ago after spend-ing four seasons, as a student-athlete on the Cal gymnastics team. In his time as an assistant coach, Floyd has helped in the continued development of the Golden Bear program. During three seasons in his current role, Floyd has helped head coach Barry Weiner lead the Bears to three win-ning seasons – two top-fi ve and one top-10 national fi nishes – as well as fi ve individual NCAA championship titles.

Floyd was the team captain of the Bears during his junior and senior seasons. During his career as a Cal student-athlete, Floyd earned three Academic All-American honors. He also helped the Bears to two third place fi nishes at the NCAA Championships.

Upon graduating from Cal with a degree in applied mathematics, Floyd began coaching with the Golden Bear Gymnastics Club. In his two years there, he coached two Junior National Team members and was named Northern California Coach of the Year in 2005. Floyd was a member of the U.S. Junior National Team for four years, from 1993-96.

Floyd, a native of Maryland, is in his fourth year at Cal.

TIM McNEILL Graduate Intern • 1st Year

Tim McNeill, a four-year letterwinner for the Golden Bears, joins his alma mater as a graduate intern. McNeill is the all-time most decorated California men’s gymnast with fi ve individual NCAA championship titles. As an undergraduate, McNeill was co-captain of the Bears for his senior (2008) and junior (2007) seasons and a seven-time All-American.

McNeill, a native of Falls Church, Va., won his fi rst title as a sophomore in 2006, when he helped lead the Bears to a fi fth-place team fi nish. In 2007, McNeill took home the individual titles on pommel horse and parallels bars to become the second Golden Bear ever to win two NCAA titles in the same year and the fi rst to repeat as a national champion on a particular event. He repeated on both events – pommel horse and parallels bars – in his senior year of 2008 to bring his career total of national titles to fi ve.

During his senior campaign, McNeill won MPSF Championships titles on pommel horse and parallels bars and was named to the U.S. Senior National Team. As a junior, he won his second and third titles, and was named the NCAA Division I National Gymnast of the Week on Feb. 22. McNeill excelled during his sophomore season as well as during the start of his freshman sea-son before faced with injury setbacks.

Prior to attending Cal, McNeill fi nished fi rst on pommel horse and fl oor exercises at the 2004 nationals and competed for Capital Gymnastics.
