Lesson 43 Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring

factored form  0 = a(x  p)(x  q) where p and q represent the xintercepts of the graph of the equation

FOIL Method: To multiply two binomials, find the sum of the products of F the first terms, O the Outer terms, I the Inner terms, and L the Last terms.

Example 1a. Write a quadratic equation in standard form with     and 5 as its roots.

b. Write a quadratic equation in standard form with      and 6 as its roots.

Zero Product PropertyFor any real numbers a and b, if ab = 0, then either a = 0, b = 0, or both a and b equal zero.

If (x + 3)(x  5) = 0, then x + 3 = 0 or x  5 = 0.

Example 2Solve each equation.a. 9y2 + 3y = 0

b. 5a2  20a = 0

Example 3Solve each equation.a. x2  6x + 9 = 0

b. y2 = 36

Example 4Solve each equation.a. x2  2x  15 = 0

b. 5x2 + 34x + 24 = 0

Example 5The entrance to an office building is an arch in the shape of a parabola whose vertex is the height of the arch.  The height of the arch is given by h = 9  x2, where x is the horizontal distance from the center of the arch.  Both h and x are measured in feet.  How wide is the arch at ground level?
