Get in the spirit for these historic festivities with 50 Years of Fabulous (Wednesday, June 12 at 9:30pm) – which recounts the history of The Imperial Council, the oldest LGBT charity organization in the world – and The Lavender Scare (Thursday, June 27 at 8pm) which tells the story of the four-decades-long witch hunt that began in 1953 when President Eisenhower declared homosexuals “security risks” and ordered the firing of government employees suspected of being gay or lesbian. Visit thirteen.org/summer69 for more on Stonewall 50 and other historic events that took place in the Summer of 1969. T he times, they are a-changing, as a song says. So is the climate. This month, NJTV explores climate change and its impact on New Jersey in a new special, Facing the Future, produced by the NJTV News team as part of the PBS national Peril and Promise: The Challenge of Climate Change initiative. The half-hour documentary, hosted by NJTV News Anchor Mary Alice Williams, will report on the topic of climate change from several vantage-points. The first will assess the over-arching local and global climate issues and threats, including the prophesied “doomsday scenario.” Among those experts lending their expertise on the subject is Dr. Robert Kopp, Director of the Institute of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences of Rutgers University in New Brunswick. The program continues by digging deeper into what the topic means to the Garden State, examining local efforts to combat climate change and revealing plans for the future. Learn how New Jersey communities are working to protect themselves from the effects of climate change, from new building standards at Newark Airport to protecting tidal marshes and oyster reefs and planting more trees. There is also a case study of Hoboken, a city hit especially hard during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 as two-thirds of it is in what the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has designated a “flood zone”. Facing the Future tracks that city’s post-Sandy ecovery projects and discusses its future planning efforts with the city’s Environmental Services Director Jennifer Gonzales about projects from rainwater collection and paver-Installation to converting concrete parking lots into playgrounds. To keep the discussion going, NJTV is hosting a community forum in Cape May this July on the topic, showing a clips from the documentary. Want to know more about climate change? JUNE 2019

This month, millions of people will flock to New York City for WorldPride, a global celebration of LGBTQ rights, and to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village that sparked the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement. Visit thirteen.org/summer69 for more on Stonewall 50 and

other historic events that took place in the Summer of 1969.

The times, they are a-changing, as a song says.

Peril and Promise series Sinking Cities, which reports on how climate change affects four worldwide cities, will re-air this month (Thursdays at 9pm beginning June 6).
