Parts of the System

• The camera to take the pictures

• The database to retrieve photos

• The ‘algorithm’ to compare the current photo to past photos

Basic theory

• Distinctive facial features measured– Distance between eyes– Width of nose– Length of the jaw-line

• Approx. 80 different points

Problems with 2D Pictures

• Very sensitive to light & shadow

• Picture had to be straight on

• Sensitive to changes in facial expression

3D facial recognition

Surface Texture Analysis

• Measures color and texture of skin

• More tolerant to changes in facial expression, hair, and accessories

• Improvement of 20-25%

Current & Future Uses

• Security– Used at Super Bowl XXXV – Airports– ATM verification (future)
