Why is washing your face so important?
Proper facial cleansing is the cornerstone of
every good skin care routine. In fact, a
properly cleansed face can pave the way to
maintaining healthy, glowing skin.
Here are 5 benefits to keeping your face
well cleansed every day:
Prevents your skin from looking dull due
to a buildup of impurities and dead skin
cells.
Prevents your skin from breaking out due
to pores being clogged.
Prevents your skin from drying out and
going into an overdrive mode to produce
more oil.
Prepares your skin to receive maximum
benefits from the next step of your face
care regime.
Prepares your makeup to adhere better
and last longer.1
How often should you be washing your face?
You should only wash your face twice a day
—a light cleanse in the morning and a
thorough cleanse at the end of the day. Any
more and you’ll be stripping away the
natural lipids that serve to protect your skin.
One basic principle for facial washing is:
never wash your face till it's squeaky clean!
Because over-cleansing can compromise the
pH level of your skin and trigger unwanted
problems such as:
Sensitive and allergic skin conditions such
as rashes, contact or seborrheic dermatitis.
Tight and dry skin leading to fine lines
and wrinkles over time.
Oily skin leading to skin breakout or acne.

What's the ideal water temperature to wash your face?
Even though using hot water seems like a
great idea since it can remove dirt and
grime very well, it can dry out your skin by
stripping it of its natural lipids.
On the other hand, cold water can cause
broken capillaries because that temperature
tends to drive the blood with increased
force.
So exposing your skin to different extremes
can actually cause irritation, excess dryness
and blood vessel ruptures.
Your best bet is to use lukewarm water to
wash your face.

What type of cleansers can you use?1. Oil Cleansers
An oil cleanser is effective at removing pore-
clogging debris, including waterproof
makeup. But the truth is that oil cleansers,
especially those that emulsifies, cleanses so
well that they are actually drying when used
in the long term because they are capable of
stripping everything off your skin, including
your natural lipids.
2. Foam Cleansers
Foam cleansers contains surfactants that
create a rich, foamy lather. They are effective
at decongesting clogged pores, removing
excess oil and killing acne-causing bacteria.
But no matter how gentle they claim to be,
this type of cleansers is definitely drying
when used on a prolonged basis.

Gel cleansers are clear and have a gel-like
consistency. They do not lather up as much
as a foam cleanser and hence are gentler, but
can remove dirt and grime quite effectively
too, especially when used with a facial
sponge.
4. Cream Cleansers
Cream cleansers are usually thick, creamy
and contain moisturizing ingredients like
botanical oils. They gently cleanse your skin
without stripping it of its natural oils. Cream
cleansers can also come in the form of “
milk” or “lotion ”but no matter their
consistency, they are best used with a face
sponge or cotton pad.

Clay cleansers are known for their absorbing
power as they purify your skin by drawing
out excess oil and toxins from your pores.
This type of cleansers should only be used
twice a week as they're drying.
6. Exfoliating Cleansers
Whether it’s a cleanser that contains
microbeads or a liquid cleanser that contains
salicylic acid, these exfoliating cleansers can
help remove dead skin cells and reveal a
fresh, bright layer of your skin. But
regardless of how gentle they claim to be,
such cleansers should not be used daily as
they can strip your skin of its natural lipids
and cause more problems in the long run.

These soap bars are made to be as skin-
friendly and luxurious as their liquid
counterparts. They claim to offer more skin-
friendly pH levels in addition to nutrient-
rich, highly moisturizing ingredients. But
they usually leave the skin feeling too
squeaky clean and hence, drying.
8. Powder Cleansers
Powder cleansers are powdery soft when dry
but disintegrates into a creamy concoction
upon contact with water. They thoroughly
cleanses your skin while providing gentle
exfoliation. Best to be used on alternate days
or thrice a week.

A soap-free and no-rinse solution, micellar
water is made up of micelles which are tiny
round balls of cleansing molecules suspended
in soft water.
Micelles attract dirt and oil like a magnet and
hence, micellar water is able to lift impurities
from your skin especially when used with a
cotton wool ball or cotton pad.
Micellar water originates from France, where
it was initially used as a substitute for harsh
tap water without the need to rinse off. So
naturally, micellar water is formulated to be
mild without irritants and can cleanse
without disturbing your skin’s natural pH
balance. Can be used daily without issues.

What's the best type of cleanser to wash your face in the long term?
A gentle cleanser ideally with a pH range
between 4.5 and 5.5 to ensure your skin's
acid mantle is protected and not
compromised. Your skin should feel fresh
and supple after cleansing with no tight or
dry feeling.
Cream cleansers are the best when used in
the long term because they are gentle and
will not strip the skin of its natural lipids.
Because they're gentle, they're best paired
with a face sponge or cotton pad for effective
cleansing.
Micellar water and gel cleansers are next on
the list because they are both gentle and can
cleanse well.

What's the best method to wash your face?
Double cleansing is the best method to
keeping your skin clean and supple. The
Japanese and Korean women swear by it!
As the name implies, double cleansing is to
wash your face twice. Once to remove the
makeup and impurities, and a second time
to cleanse the face of all remaining residue.
Here are some tips to get the most out of
double cleansing:
Double cleanse only once, at the end of
each day.
Use a cream cleanser and a konjac sponge
to double cleanse. Or start with a cream
cleanser then end with a micellar cleanser.
If you wear heavy makeup, use a cotton
pad with your cream cleanser to remove
the makeup first. Follow on with a gel
cleanser.10
What other tips do you need to know about facial cleansing?
Always wash your face in a circular
motion with your fingertips.
Start washing from your nose and go
outward toward your hairline.
Be sure to massage your cleanser all the
way out to your hairline to thoroughly
get rid of any makeup and gunk.
When you're rinsing, rub your fingers
over areas where lather or cream tends to
accumulate, like the sides of your nose,
your eyebrows, and near the hairline.
Once you think you've rinsed enough,
splash three more times for a thorough
clean.
Wash your face lightly in the morning,
cleansing once only using a cream or gel
cleanser. Alternatively use a micellar
cleanser to wipe off excess sebum.

What about facial cleansing tools?
Cleansing tools aid facial washing and help
to keep the skin clean and clear.
Such tools should be gentle on the skin.
That's why cleansing tools like an electronic
face brush isn't ideal for daily facial washing
as it can contribute to over cleansing.
Face towels or muslin cloths are fine if you
don't use them to scrub or rub your face.
Otherwise, use them sparingly when you're
looking to exfoliate your dead skin cells.
The best cleansing tool to use daily on a
long term basis is a konjac sponge. It is soft
and gentle and is able to cleanse the face
extremely well. Just dry them well after
use.

What should you do immediately after washing your face?
First thing first, never leave your face to air
dry naturally. Without any hydrating
ingredients to bind moisture to your skin,
drying your face naturally only means the
water just evaporates. When that happens,
your skin becomes drier and feels tighter.
What you should be doing immediately
after washing is to pat dry your face with a
clean towel or a tissue paper.
You don't have to pat away all the water.
Leave your skin slightly damp and quickly
apply toner or serum over to seal in the
moisture. Then follow through with your
usual skin care routine.
