    Parish Giving

January 24, 2021 Dear Our Lady Queen of Peace Brothers and Sisters, This weekend we are launching here in our parish the 2021 Archdiocesan Annual Appeal with the letter from Cardinal Tobin regarding this year’s appeal. We have information brochures by the entrances of the Church for you to read. Of course, we have the Annual Appeal envelopes for you take home and return in the coming weeks with your generous donations! This year, the Archdiocese has given us a goal of $42,524 for the Annual Appeal. On the following page, you will see all of the many ministries that these funds support. In fact, as you fill up your envelope for the Annual Appeal or make a donation online, you can select and restrict your funds to only the ministries that you wish to support. There is a wonderful incentive that Cardinal Tobin is giving the parishes regarding the appeal - if we meet 100% of the goal in funds collected (not pledged) by June 30th, we will receive a 2% reduction in our parish assessment for fiscal year 2022! This would save us approximately $13,000 or even more in our assessments. Here is something more. Any funds collected in excess of our goal will be returned to our parish to assist us with our needs. I am, therefore, asking and appealing each and every one of our parishioners to make it our aim to reach our goal or even exceed it by June 2021. In doing so, not only are we supporting the greater Church but we will also be helping our parish save 2% in assessments for Fiscal Year 2022. What if we don’t hit our goal? I want to make this as clear as I can. If we do not meet at least 85% of the goal in funds collected by June 30th amounting to $36,145, our parish will need to make up for the shortfall as an expense with payment due by September 30, 2021. In other words, if we do not meet at least 85% of our goal, we are required to make up the difference. My heartfelt prayer is that you will sincerely understand, my dear OLQP parishioners, why we need to take all our efforts to reach our goal. I am entrusting all this to Our Lady Queen of Peace knowing that Our Blessed Mother understands and hears the prayers of her children! I thank you in advance for your support and your generosity. May Our Lord grant you the hundredfold of His blessings in return! Sincerely in the Lord, Father Tony

January 8, 2021 Dear Parishioner, I greet you in the peace of Our Lord Jesus Christ at the start of this new year. Though different in many ways, our recent celebration of Christmas, reminded us so powerfully that Christ is the Light that shines in the darkness. In more ways than one, this past year seemed to be covered by shadows dimmed by the dramatic global pandemic that continues to affect our world. Despite the uncertainty and adversity, the People of God remain steadfast in their witness and stewardship, and for this I am grateful. As is customary for this time of year, I would like to humbly ask your support for the 2021 Annual Appeal which will fund essential programs and ministries at the heart of our Catholic mission in our four counties - namely to proclaim the gospel, to pass on the faith to future generations, particularly through the celebration of the sacraments, and to care for the poor and those on the margins. Now more than ever, especially during this health crisis, our ministries and programs need your support. Will you prayerfully consider a gift to the 2021 Annual Appeal? I can assure you that 100% of your contribution will fund the case for support outlined in the enclosed brochure. The gifts we receive are used exclusively to serve the mission of the Church and nothing more. Once again, thank you for your faithfulness. May Mary, Mother of our Redeemer and our Mother, protect you and lead you ever closer to her Son. Sincerely in Christ the Redeemer,

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Newark

    Readings for the Week

First Reading — The Ninevites turn from their evil ways in response to Jonah’s message (Jonah 3:1‐5, 10). Psalm — Teach me your ways, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading — The world in its present form is passing away (1 Corinthians 7:29‐31). Gospel — Jesus proclaims, “Repent, and believe in the gospel.” The new disciples abandon their nets and follow him (Mark 1:14‐20).

STAY with me, Lord, for it is necessary to have Thou present so that I do not forget Thee. Thou knowest how easily I abandon Thee. Stay with me, Lord, because I am weak, and I need Thy strength, so that I may not fall so often. Stay with me, Lord, for Thou art my life, and without Thee, I am without fervour. Stay with me, Lord, for Thou art my light, and without Thee, I am in darkness. Stay with me, Lord, to show me Thy Will. Stay with me, Lord, so that I hear Thy Voice and follow Thee. Stay with me, Lord, for I desire to love Thee very much, and always be in Thy company. Stay with me, Lord, if Thou wishest me to be faithful to Thee. Stay with me, Lord, for as poor as my soul is, I want it to be a place of consolation for Thee, a nest of love. Amen.

    Prayer of St. Padre Pio

This novena prayer was recited every day by Padre Pio for all those who asked for prayers.  I. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and it will be opened to you.” Behold I knock, I seek and ask for the grace of [insert your intention.] Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory be to the Father…Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. II. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, if you ask any thing of the Father in my name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of [insert your intention.] Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory be to the Father…Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you. III. O my Jesus, you have said: “Truly I say to you, heaven and earth will pass away but my words will not pass away.” Encouraged by your infallible words I now ask for the grace of [insert your intention.] Our Father…Hail Mary…Glory be to the Father…Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in you.  O Sacred Heart of Jesus, for whom it is impossible not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of you, through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your tender mother and ours.  Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.

We are Called Personally to Cooperate with God: Saint Francis de Sales (Feast Day Jan 24th) wrote the following description of our cooperation with God in “An Intro‐duction to the Devout Life.” “In all you have to do, rely wholly on God’s providence through which your plans will succeed. Nevertheless, strive quietly on your part to cooperate with God’s design. You may be sure that if you have great trust in God, the success that comes to you will always be that which is most useful for you whether it appears good or bad in your own judgment (To be con-tinued next week)

    Saints and Special Observances

Sunday:  Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday:  The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle Tuesday:  Ss. Timothy and Titus Wednesday:  St. Angela Merici Thursday:  St. Thomas Aquinas  FEAST OF FAITH The Penitential Rite   Standing together in the presence of the Lord, we acknowledge our weakness, our sins and faults and failings. But the penitential rite is really less about our sins than it is about God’s mercy. It is not a time for individual confession, like a mini‐sacrament of reconciliation. It is, rather, a preparatory rite, preparing us to praise the mercy of Christ as we acknowledge our own weakness. When Simon Peter witnesses the miraculous catch of fish—when he realizes who is in the boat with him—he falls at Jesus’ feet with the words, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man” (Luke 5:8). We are like Peter. The more aware of the Lord’s presence we become, the more awareness we also have of our sinfulness, our weakness.    The penitential rite of the Mass takes several forms, from the traditional Confiteor or “I confess” to a litany, spoken or sung by the priest, deacon or cantor with responses by the entire assembly. The penitential rite always includes the words Kyrie, eleison; Christe, eleison—Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy. This ancient Greek prayer came to the Roman liturgy from the East, and still echoes in many of the litanies of the Eastern Rite Churches. These words turn our gaze from our own weakness to the gentleness, the kindness, the forgiving love of Christ. ‐Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.  FAMILY INFLUENCE   Disorder in the society is the result of disorder in the family. —St. Angela Merici  NOT WITHOUT LOVE   The soul cannot live without love. —St. Francis de Sales

    Treasures From Our Tradition

“Ordinary” is not always a desirable adjective. Who would not be insulted to receive a thank‐you note for your “ordinary birthday gift,” or “the ordinary hospitali‐ty at the dinner party”? No restaurant advertises its “ordinariness,” no car dealer seats a customer at the steering wheel and whispers, “Look how ordinary it is!” Yet here we are in “Ordinary Time.” The word carries a different meaning here: it does not mean these days are dull, boring, pedestrian, uninteresting. It means “ordinal,” or “numbered” Sundays, a season of the year when we follow the story of Jesus’ life and ministry in an ordered way, with each Sunday assigned an ordinal number.    You can amaze your friends with this example of Catholic arithmetic: the “Ordinary Sundays” begin with the last Sunday of Christmas, the Baptism of the Lord, continue until the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, and resume after a cluster of feasts following Pentecost Sun‐day. The numbers are calculated by counting backwards from the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Thirty‐fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Now you know there is noth‐ing “ordinary” about “Ordinary Time!” —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

    The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided.   Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.  O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my peti‐tions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
