Brown Bear meets guests
RUSSIA’S RING OF FIRE & WILD ALASKADiscover the Russian Far East, a geothermal hot spot and one of the most biologically rich parts of the planet. Explore the Kuril Islands with their stunning volcanic landscapes and vast populations of seabirds. Search for brown bears on the Kamchatka Peninsula, where over 160 volcanoes stud the landscape. Or continue across the Bering Sea to remote Alaska with its astonishing wildlife. Every landing holds promise of something awesome, amazing … join us.
Far, far east off the coast of siberia, the sea of okhotsk is one of the least visited regions in the Russian Far East. along its southern flank, the Kuril Islands stretch over 700 miles, a wonderland of volcanoes and hot springs, and a haven for enormous populations of migratory seabirds. Northern fur seals and steller sea lions haul out on rocky outcrops, while the huge steller’s sea eagle soars overhead. along the eastern shore, the Kamchatka Peninsula percolates with geothermal activity, a vast wilderness with half the world’s population of steller’s sea eagles, the largest population of brown bears on Earth, and rivers and streams churning with salmon.
From Kamchatka, you can follow in the wake of Vitus Bering across the eponymous Bering sea to some of the most inaccessible places in North america, smouldering landscapes of restless volcanoes, glacier-carved fjords and tundra teeming with wildlife. The aleutian Islands were stepping stones for Russian trappers and traders, and site of the Japanese invasion during WWII. Today they form part of the alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, renowned for its dramatic, sea-sculpted coastlines, abundant marine animals, millions of migratory and nesting seabirds — and unmatched opportunities for adventure. Join us as we sail to these remote regions of the Pacific Rim on an expedition that beckons nature lovers, history buffs, and the intrepid explorer within.
Expedition TeamWe’ve taken great care to assemble a top-notch team of experts. For we know full well that those who yearn to explore the farthest reaches of our planet are driven by a quest for knowledge and discovery. In daily briefings, discussions and recaps, you’ll learn your destination from naturalists, historians, and other professionals hand-picked for their expertise in the regions you visit. you can cruise by Zodiac® into the caldera
of yankitcka Island as a geologist explains the causes of volcanoes, for example. or join an ornithologist on deck and learn to identify some of the 150 seabird species in the Kuril Islands. The marine biologist can usually be found here too, searching the seas for signs of marine life. Numerous species of whales, porpoises and seals proliferate in these fertile waters.
Onboard LifestyleBuilt for expedition cruising, Silver Discoverer’s can navigate safely through these icy regions. Her intimate size and shallow draft allow for maximum manoeuvrability through narrow fjords and inlets. Notable silversea distinctions such as all-suite accommodations with butler service, open bars, complimentary WiFi, and truly world-class cuisine are luxuries rarely seen in expedition cruising. With a crew-to-guest ratio of nearly one to one, service is equally outstanding. and with only 120 guests, there’s considerable opportunity to meet and mingle with your guides and fellow travellers. after all, one of the great joys of an expedition is the company you meet — and keep.
The Royal Geographical Society: An Exclusive PartnershipThanks to this distinguished alliance, guests can enjoy historical information collated from centuries of scientific exploration by the Royal geographical society. Founded in 1830, the society, whose patron is The Queen of England, has supported some of the world’s most notable explorers and expeditions like those of Darwin, Livingstone, Hillary, shackleton and Wallace. Its archives contain over two million items that record the history of geography and exploration for the past 500 years — an invaluable resource for scientific research. and now for the guests of silversea.

ALASKA & THE RUSSIAN FAR EAST
Long closed to foreigners with impassable ice floes much of the year, the Sea of Okhotsk and remote Kamchatka have fired the imagination of explorers for centuries. Join us as we sail in Bering’s wake across the Pacific Ring of Fire. Explore wilderness regions dense with wildlife and breathtaking in their volcanic beauty.
SUGGESTED EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS:
• Marvel at spectacular natural landscapes, pristine tundra and massive volcanoes
• travel along the historic routes of explorers and traders• Be on the lookout for rare wildlife including the western
grey whale and Steller sea lion• Photograph a variety of wildlife including walrus, fur seal,
otter, red fox and the enormous Kamchatka brown bear• Cruise and explore by Zodiac®, watching for walrus haul-
outs and sea otters at play in the surrounding waters
In 1732, Peter the great commissioned Vitus Bering to determine whether a land bridge existed to the New World. It was the largest expedition the world had ever seen, and so too, our own great northern expeditions can only be described in superlatives. For this is not only the most seismically active region of the Pacific Rim, with geysers and volcanoes and fantastic fumarole fields, but the Bering sea is also home to one of the world’s largest marine and bird populations. a fantasyland for photographers and nature lovers, alike.
A TASTE OF YOUR ITINERARY
Enmelen Village, Chukotka, RussiaThe yupik and Chukchi people in this small settlement support themselves by reindeer herding and hunting of sea mammals. Villagers in handmade native costumes treat us to a song and dance performance and a tasting of local delicacies.
Semidi Islands, AlaskaThere are 2.5 million birds here, almost half the breeding seabirds of the alaska Peninsula in this nearly uninhabited archipelago, including horned puffins, northern fulmars and skuas, and over a million murres.
Utkholok Peninsula and Kvachina River, Kamchatka, Russia The 1,000-mile long Kamchatka Peninsula contains a vast network of rivers that produce up to one-fourth of all wild Pacific salmon. The Peninsula also hosts the world’s largest density of brown bears, and we’ll look for these huge creatures fishing for salmon along the Utkholok and Kvachina watersheds, some of the most productive steelhead rivers on the Peninsula.
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia The only major city on the Peninsula is also the scientific and cultural centre of the region. on our tour we’ll visit the museum of ethnography and natural history, the art school and the gold-domed Russian orthodox cathedral.
Matua Island, Russia Matua Island is home to one of the Kuril’s most active volcanoes, with more than 14 documented eruptions in the past 250 years. Learn about the Japanese military base that was set up here during WWII and how the Japanese used to capture geothermal heat from the volcano to keep the runway open.
