Mutnovsky Volcano (2323 m) is situated 70 km south of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in the Southern Kamchatka volcanic belt. The volcano has a composite structure. The entire massif comprises four cones of stratovolcanoes. The structure is compounded by numerous cinder cones and lava flows erupted onto the slopes of the stratovolcanoes. It has numerous and various fumarolics fields where one can see all different forms of modern gas-hydro-thermal activity with magnificent structures of volcanic sulfur of 2,5 m. high and 5 m. in diameter. Some of these structures contains rare minerals, such as markazite and metacinnabarite. Some of thermal springs are located not far from active craters, glaciers and lakes. The most impressive of them are Severo-Mutnovskiye and Datchnye with vapor-gas spurts, boiling muds, hot lakes and heated bogs. River Vulkannaya flows down from the crater

of volcano and forms 80 meters-high waterfall and deep canyon Opasny. There were at least 15 eruptions of Mutnovsky recorded in the historic times. In 1848, there was a “severe” eruption which was accompanied by a “collapse of the volcano”. In 1852, 1853, 1854, columns and jets of black smoke and steam

were observed above the crate of the volcano. In the 20th century the eruptions of the volcano were explosive and ash-ejecting, though no lava eruptions have been recorded. The last eruption began on 31 December, 1960. At the northeast of the Mutnovsky volcano located the Mutnovsky steam-hydrotherms field. Mutnovsky volcano is situated on the verge of a cast negative gravity anomaly in the gradient zone. An intense positive anomaly characterizes the southeastern sector of the volcano in the magnetic field. Historic eruptions were explosive, except for explosive-effusive eruption in 1904. Any Mutnovsky eruption may cause mud flows which are a treat because of their high speed and devastating potentialities. River Vulkannaya flows down from the crater of volcano forms 80 meters-high waterfall and deep canyon Opasny. All this specific features make Mutnovski volcano unique and allow to put it in a line with the most outstanding thermal fields of the world. 12 July: Breakfast. Free day. The Valley of Geysers, located in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia is the only geyser field in Eurasia and the second largest concentration of geysers in the world. Approximately 200 geysers exist in the area along with many hot-water springs and perpetual spotters. The valley is one of the few places in the world where geysers occur naturally, along with Yellowstone National Park in the U.S. and sites in Iceland, Chile, and New Zealand. In Kamchatka more than 20 large jets and 200 smaller thermal springs punch through Earth's crust in a 2.7-square-mile (7-square-kilometer) area. Over thirty geysers have been named; among these was the Giant geyser (Velikan), capable of producing a jet of water reaching up to 40 meters. At least 20 such geysers erupt on a stretch of the Geysernaya River Basin in the Valley of Geysers, along with dozens of smaller gushing vents and hundreds of hot springs. The largest of these geysers erupts with 60 tons of water once or twice a year. 13 July: Departure to Malki village, rafting on the Bystraya river. Fishing. Cooking of fish soup – so called ukha. 8.00 arriving to the camp, breakfast, rafting 13-14.00 Lunch 14.30 Rafting 18.00 Departure to the camp. Arriving to the Malkinskiy hot springs. Bathing in the world known termal springs. 20.00 Back to Paratunka Malkinskiye hot springs: Malkinskiye hot springs are located in a picturesque area, 5 km east of s.Malki on the left bank r.Klyuchovki (left tributary Bystraya River). The river valley here has a width of 0,4-0,5 km and is bounded on both sides of hills, covered with stone-birch forests. In a small thermal area covered by gravel, is located 6 groups of griffins in which thermal water sources is mixed with cold water river.

At the top - snack (chocolate, nuts, sandwiches). From the top of the volcano there is a breathtaking view - the Pacific Ocean, Petropavlovsk, Yelizovo, the valleys of Paratunka

and Avacha rivers, volcanoes Vilyuchinsky, Burnt, Mutnovskiy, Koryak, Nalychevo Valley, volcanoes of the Zhupanovsky group. Descent. Down - dinner. Departure to the hotel. Avachinsky (2751m), one of

Kamchatka's most active volcanoes, rises above Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka's largest city. Avachinsky consists of the Late Pleistocene edifice, destroyed by a large horseshoe-shaped crater, breached to the southwest, which encloses the Young Cone stratovolcano. The crater is believed to have formed about 30,000 years ago as a result of a huge debris avalanche, the deposits of which underlie the present city. Avachinsky has been classified as a Somma volcano, based on its similarities with Vesuvius. Avachinsky produced explosive eruptions with ash-falls and pyroclastic flows. The eruptive center at this time probably was presented by coalescent extrusive domes (similar to modern Young Shiveluch), nested in the Late Pleistocene debris avalanche crater. Ashes of these eruptions can be traced at a distance of more than 200-400 km. One of the initial explosive eruptions produced more than 4 km3 of basaltic andesite tephra which was dispersed at a distance of more than 300 km to the north and formed one of the main marker ash layers for this area. The Young Cone produced multiple explosive and effusive eruptions, the most recent in 1991 and 2001. Pyroclastic flow deposits fill most of the valleys on the volcano's slopes. Tephra layers are well seen at the foot of the volcano, some of them can be traced at a distance of more than 200-400 cubic km away from the volcano and represent good markers for the Holocene stratigraphy Avachinsky has erupted at least 17 times in recorded history. Eruptions have generally been explosive, and pyroclastic flows and lahars have tended to be directed to the south west by the breached caldera. The most recent large eruption occurred in 1945, when about 0.25 km of magma was ejected. The volcano has since had small eruptions in 1991 and 2001. The volcano continues to experience frequent earthquakes, and many fumaroles exist near the

summit. The temperature of gases emitted at these fumaroles has been measured at over 400°C. In light of its proximity to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Avachinsky was designated a Decade Volcano in 1996 as part of the United Nations' International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction, together with the nearby Koryaksky volcano.
