What’s happening in Quarrington Hill?

Quarrington Hill (Quern Don)

Dates back to Medieval times, with the area producing quern stones and lime for building purposes. The opening of the coalfield saw an influx of miners, working in the surrounding Collieries, requiring houses and amenities. Though it is a small Colliery Village, at its peak it had two chapels, a church, school, shops, a cinema and a number of public houses; however, a great deal of the original village housing has now been demolished.

Crowtrees Colliery 1825 – 1877

The Colliery was sunk and originally owned by William Hedley, a Railway pioneer, with its coal being transported on the Clarence Railway to Stockton for shipment. Robson and Jackson took over the Colliery in 1839 and continued with its modernisation, shipping coal at Hartlepool. The final owner was James Morrison who used the coal for his ironworks at West Cornforth. Nine people lost their lives during the Colliery’s existence.

The area is now a Nature Reserve.

members and subsidise Leadership in Running

Fitness and First Aid in Sport courses for our group.

In the future we plan to support local community

groups with donations received as a result of any

c25k programmes, which will be voted on by our

group members.

by MIND (the mental health charity).
