These are tough economic times -- we’re all feeling the pinch. But these are also times that give Alaskans the chance to help organizations that make an impact on our community. Fairbanks Arts Association is pleased to participate in the 2010 Pick.Click.Give. program, where you can choose to give a contribution from $25 to the full amount of your dividend.

This innovative program gives Alaskans a way to donate to their favorite nonprofit organizations, including FAA. For those Alaskans who may not have given to a nonprofit in the past, the program provides a safe and secure way to make a donation.

For those who already support their favorite nonprofits, Pick.Click.Give. is a great way to make

an additional gift. As you consider your donation

to Fairbanks Arts Association, we also encourage you to visit the Pick.Click.Give. website and search for other organizations. Many local deserving groups are participating in this unique opportunity. You can also hear the

stories of causes that benefitted from Pick.Click.Give. in 2009.

Consider a gift today. If every Alaskan takes this step -- think of the accomplishment we can make together.

Fairbanks Arts Association was established in 1966 to promote and support the arts in the Fairbanks area. The Association is funded by private, corporate, and foundation memberships and donations, City of Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska State Council on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. With assistance from professional staff and charitable volunteers, the Association provides services in five areas: Visual, Literary, Performing, Community Arts and Arts Education. FAA also helps to raise funds for other arts groups, provides technical assistance and support for arts programing, encourages and advises individual artists and beginning organizations, sponsors workshops and presents educational forums.

Shirley was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. She attended UAF, majoring in Biology with minors in French, Art and Anthropology. Her husband Richard ‘OD’ Odsather, says he stepped on her shoe strings while they were students at UAF. With the exception of a 10 year sojourn in Anchorage, Fairbanks has been their home. They built a house on Gilmore Trail where they raised their sons, Jon and Erik.

Shirley’s grandmother learned to work with clay as a hobby in the 1930s and 40s in Victoria, B.C. Although not directly taught by her, the influence of her objects definitely sparked Shirley’s curiosity about pottery. It was Stan Zielinski’s ceramics classes that were held in the then brand new Fine Arts building at UAF that pulled her into the mud! She shared a studio with Ida Knaebel for a couple of years before building a new studio beside her house in the 1980s. After beginning her own studio, she was invited to teach beginning ceramics classes at UAF. She has also taught pottery in Yakutsk, Sakha, Russia.

NORTH POLE ART SOCIETY

North Pole Art Society was formed over three years ago at the North Pole Grange Community Center. A group of artists got together to paint on Wednesday evenings and Watercolor Wednesday was formed. We started to do mini workshops to help artists hone their skills, then monthly “Third Friday” shows a while later. Our board members, John Poirrer, Tammy Phillips, Neal Johnson and Lena Foreman believe in promoting the arts in our community and helping fellow artists promote their artwork. We have volunteers who help with our shows, workshops and weekly painting sessions.

In December, we had several of our members assist “Christmas In Ice” and we will also be doing an ice carving workshop in January. Additionally we had a artist-style Christmas celebration with a “Watercolor Painting Demo” with Vladimir Zhikhartsev on December 23rd.

Our “Third Friday” show in January will be a special fundraising event. Our show “Tom Nixon and Friends” will donate money to a baby girl, Lylah Coghill, who was born Nov 8 with liver cancer. Lylah and her parents were medivaced to Seattle. They are expecting to be in Seattle for at least 6 months and could use a helping hand. We are all thrilled to help her through art. Art can be a powerful thing.

We are looking forward to the coming year with a full schedule of shows, workshops and events. We welcome all artists to join us with whatever medium they choose. Feel free to contact Tammy at [email protected].

.:: Reading Series ‘10

Culminating five years of collaboration, Double Moon by Margo Klass and Frank Soos is a spirited conversation between image and text. Margo uses found objects to create enigmatic box constructions and Frank responds with mini-essays that are sometimes ironic, sometimes whimsical, sometimes piercing. Margo’s compositions of objects—old tools, discarded game pieces, twigs, rocks—lead Frank to contemplations on love, loss and place.

Both artist and writer have studios in Fairbanks and Corea, Maine. Margo’s work has been exhibited across the country. She is a 2008 recipient of the Rasmuson Foundation Individual Artist Award and has recently been Artist-in-Residence at Denali National Park in Alaska. Before moving to Alaska, Margo taught art and art history in the Washington, DC area. Frank has published two volumes of short stories and was the winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Unified Field Theory. He has been awarded fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Alaska State Council on the Arts. Margo and Frank began their collaboration while holding fellowships at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.

Margo Klass and Frank SoosAmong Margo Klass’s influences are medieval altarpieces,

and the work of constructionist Kurt Schwitters and architect Tadeo Ando. Her work has been exhibited by various galleries and museums from Maine to Alaska. She is a 2008 recipient of a Rasmuson Foundation Artist Award.

Frank Soos has published two works of fiction: Early Yet and Unified Field Theory, the 1997 winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction and one book of essays, Bamboo Fly Rod Suite.

Christine “Okiku” Thomas is excited to call Fairbanks her “official” home. Her husband’s army career landed her in Fairbanks 10 years ago “kicking and screaming”. However, wonderful friends and mentors in the art community have helped to make Fairbanks Christine’s home of choice. Christine’s LOVE of bright colors and playful experimentation with water media have created unusual “one of a kind” works that have caught the eye of many. She enjoys beginning each piece with a “what if” approach and paints with many types of textural elements, often incorporating elements of collage. To own an “Okiku original” is to own something unique. Christine is a self taught artist who has had the pleasure of learning from many mentors in the Watercolor Society. Her signature, “Okiku” is her Japanese middle name and means chrysanthemum. Originally born and raised in Hawaii, Christine is proud and happy to call Alaska her home.

Ronald L. SmithHow do ptarmigan survive Alaska’s extreme cold? With

the help of winter toe feathers! More amazing details about grizzlies, salmon and moose - as well as lesser-known creatures, plants and even dinosaurs - fill the pages of Ronald Smith’s Interior & Northern Alaska: A Natural History. Illustrations throughout complement the text, and an extensive eighteen-page index makes this a handy reference and a fascinating journey of discovery.

Ron was born in Texas and grew up in the Arizona, New Mexico and southern California. He graduated from Occidental College in 1964. He earned an MS and PhD at the University of Miami. In 1968 he joined the faculty at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. For the next 31 years he conducted research and taught a variety of biology courses. He retired from the university in 1999.

Ron grew up hunting, fishing and hiking with his family. Alaska provided many opportunities to pursue those hobbies. Ron and his wife Marsha now split their time between Alaska and the Hill Country of Texas. They can’t completely break away from Alaska, especially in the summers.

Tropical Storm Megan was on the verge of changing into a much more frightening form. In an hour segment of this planet’s time it would become a hurricane like none that had been felt on this world before. They would call it Hurricane Cindy. Its fame would supercede that of any other storm or hurricane for it would prove to be the harbinger of

something more profound. This storm was being observed by others besides those who would survive it. There were others who knew how to use it as a tool. Cindy was about to become more than just a transporter of water and planetary debris. This storm was going to deposit something much more viable to the future of this planet and its

As I got into the rhythm of full time retirement and began to think about doing some volunteering, it was nice to get a call from June asking if I could find time to volunteer in the Gallery/Gift Shop. When employed as an insurance agent, several of my clients were non-profits in the arts world, so I am familiar with their work. It seemed appropriate that my first volunteer gig would be at Fairbanks Arts Association. I have enjoyed meeting and seeing locals in the gallery, but look forward to summer as I love talking to the tourists.

As a 45 year resident of Fairbanks I have a strong love for Alaska and the Fairbanks area. My only artistic talent is in the vocal area - am a 30 year member of Fairbanks Frontier Chorus of Sweet Adelines, a long-time choir member at my church and member of the University Chorus for several years. These ventures keep my calendar hopping.
