SEPTEMBER 29, 2019 26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SEPTEMBER 30-OCTOBER 5, 2019

S M R Amos 6:1a, 4-7; Psalm 146; 1 Timothy 6:11-16; Luke

16:19-31

Today’s readings are again directed to believers, communities of faith. As in last week’s reading, Amos confronts us with a condemnation of those whose lives are focused on pleasure and self-absorption. The psalm contrasts that focus with the Lord’s—justice for the oppressed; food for the hungry; freedom for captives; sight to the blind; raising of those who are bowed down; loving the just; protecting strangers, orphans, and the widow; and by doing so, thwarting the way of the wicked. Timothy urges the pursuit of righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Luke tells the familiar tale of the wealthy man and the poor beggar at his doorstep, who experience life very differently in this world and in the next. We are once again being given clear indications about how God intends for us to live our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

LECTURAS DE HOY Amós 6:1a, 4-7; Salmo 146 [145]; 1 Timoteo 6:11-

16; Lucas 16:19-31

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. The “ecumenical movement” (from the Greek word meaning “the whole inhabited world”) began among Protestant Christians, but was given great energy in 1920 with a letter from the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, calling for closer dialogue and cooperation among Christians. In 1960, Pope John XXIII invited Protestant and Orthodox observers to the Second Vatican Council. In 1964, the Council’s Decree on Ecumenism named these Christians “separated brethren,” a huge leap forward from the time of labeling them as “outside the Church.” A year later, a new pope, Paul VI, and the Orthodox Patriarch officially nullified the condemnations that walled off East from West for nine hundred years. The pace and optimism of the 1960s has sadly waned, and the signs of progress toward unity are few; yet there are wider agreements on sharing Communion among various Christian denominations, and among Protestants agreements regarding sharing of ecclesiastical life and ministry. Among the success stories of the ecumenical movement are greater cooperation among Christian clergy, a similar Lectionary for Protestants and Catholics, and even experiments in the monastic life and common worship.—James Field. You are invited to serve as a Commentator at Sacred Heart!

Commentators welcome parishioners, announce hymns, read the Prayer of the Faithful when a

deacon is not present, and make announcements. Commentators arrive early before Mass to review the script, and this is a ministry you can readily fulfill while you are actually attending Mass.

Training is provided. If interested please contact Don Cameron at

[email protected]

S S P 10/26 EVERY 40 SECONDS, SOMEONE IN THE U.S. IS HAVING A STROKE

Stroke Scan Plus will be at Sacred Heart Basilica on October 26, 2019 to provide life-saving, wellness ultrasound screenings. It is important to perform preventive maintenance for ourselves yearly. Do you

have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease, stroke, abdominal aneurysm or internal cancers? If so, do not miss this opportunity for early detection of a possibly serious disease. These screenings are typically NOT performed at your annual

check-up, and insurance companies may not pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Diagnostic versions of these screenings cost thousands of dollars in a hospital. Stroke Scan Plus will be offering

them to you for $149 for all 7 combined ultrasound screenings (Stroke, AAA, AFIB & organs). Insurance is NOT necessary and appointments are limited. Stroke Scan will be available at

the church for you to register on October 19 & 20, 2019 or please call 832-437-7355 or toll free 1-866-935-7226 to schedule an appointment today for you or a loved one. www.strokescan.com.

S H M F G S ! Last weekend, Sacred Heart hosted its annual Ministry Fair after all Masses on Sacred Heart Way. Sacred Heart has over 40 active ministries and representatives from each of these ministries were available to answer questions and encourage parishioners to volunteer their time and talent with them. Beautiful weather encouraged parishioners to engage in fellowship and fun as the Spanish-speaking community sold burritos, tacos, elotes, and more as a fundraiser for Sacred Heart. Faith formation students were encouraged to participate in the Ministry Fair by interviewing a leader of their choice. Children were also able to help knock down a piñata to share candy with friends. The Sacred Heart Ministry Fair is part of the 2019-2020 Stewardship Campaign. Below are the remaining Stewardship events for this year’s campaign.

Treasure Commitment Weekend 9/28-29

Treasure Follow-up Commitment Weekend 10/5-6

Archbishop’s Annual Appeal Pledge Weekend 19/26-27

Please prayerfully consider how you can commit your time, talent, and treasure to Sacred Heart this year.
