TOQ-DAY is issued the first number 'of ourpaper; and, although we tremble at the

thought of the work before us, we begin itgladly. We believe that the same public spiritthat founded THE TEnH will sustain it to the end.

The Institute has never been rich in papers.Only one, we believe, has ever been published.Some years ago, the Spectrum shone for a time,but soon faded away. Still later, an attemptwas made to establish another paper, but invain; the first number never appeared.

Andnow comes THE TECH, asking its shareof favor. Even as its predecessor, it attemptsgreat things. It will be its aim to promote theinterests of the students of the Institute, andmaintain /a friendly spirit among them, breaking

down the ancient barriers of class and depart-ment. It will exercise a guardian care over themembers of the school, protecting the Fresh-man, curbing the Sophomore, correcting theJunior, and supporting the Senior in his old age.It will open an avenue for the expression ofpublic opinion, and will aim, in every possibleway, to help all in the development of theiryoung manhood and young womanhood. It ishoped, too, that it will keep the interests of theInstitute before its graduates, cherishing amongthem. the memory of their Alma Mater. Ourbrother and sister colleges, also, will becomebetter acquainted with us through this paper.

We cannot look far into the future. We can-not tell what buds of genius may be unfolded inthese columns. ,But even if genius does notbloom; even if the beauties of rhetoric andpoetry are not developed here; even if this paperbecomes, like the school it represents, only afield for plain, honest work, - we shall never-theless be sure that the efforts we make arestepping-stones to further attainments, helpingus all to the higher and nobler uses of our lives.

T may be interesting to the graduates andfriends of the Institute to know the history

of this paper's formation, and its plan of man-agement.

About a month ago, a meeting of the studentswas held for the purpose of considering thepublication of a school paper. A committee offive was chosen, with instructions to examinethe matter in detail. A week later the corn-mittee presented a report in favor of the pro-posed paper. The recommendations of thecommittee were subsequently embodied in thepresent form of government.

The management of THE TECH consists of aboard of directors of seven, representing the

various classes of the school. The directorshave charge of the publication of the paper.They elect the editorial board, consisting thisyear of ten members. The directors are re-sponsible to their respective classes for theproperty and funds in their charge, and holdtheir positions until the election of the full suc-ceeding board.

The energetic chairman of our board of di-rectors has been, from the first, prominentlyconnected with THE TECH, and deserves thethanks of the entire school.

THE prize for the best design for the cover of-THE TEC has been awarded to Mr. G. F.

Shepley, of the Architectural Department. Mr.Shepley has gained not only the mere prize, butalso the approbation of all interested in ourpaper.

Public Spirit.

A DEGREE from the Institute of Technologyconferred upon a young man is proof that he

is a good, patient worker, or that he has bornability; and we are proud of our membership ofan institution whose graduates are, in one respectat least, promising young men. But ability tolearn the lessons taught here, and to graduateeven with high honors, is but a small part of truemanly character. In doing this and nothingmore, the man is simply working out his ownselfish interest. If he works for the bettermentof his own condition that he may do his sharetoward bettering humanity, he works nobly.

The true manly character involves much morethan working for marks. Every man has dutiesother than those to self. It is only the meanestof men who do not recognize their duty ascitizens of the State. Nearly all men pay taxes,and expect to pay them. Nearly all men wantto pay taxes for the support of those thingswhich minister directly to their own personalwants.

The mean and niggardly men are quickly

sifted out when a subscription ,paper comesround, asking support for some scheme forpublic benefit. How utterly degraded andlow is the man who draws from the pocketsof whole-hearted, public-spirited men, moneyto pay for the benefits which his selfishnessallows him to enjoy! 'It would be harsh tocall such a man a thief, would it not?

The world needs a generation of public-spir-ited men; men who, when a church is wanted,a school, a public library, a park, or anythingof common benefit, can realize that want andbear their full share of the expense. We allknow rich men who are so notoriously stingythat they are never approached for a subscrip-tion. Men of more public spirit have to fill upthe blanks left by those Shylocks who are un-friendly to any public benefit. Thank God!there are public-spirited men in every commu-nity.

If a man-a young man, let us say-is poor,and honestly says that he cannot afford to giveas much in money as others, it is no disgrace tohim. But his circumstances do not excuse himfrom the duties which he still owes to society.He is bound to give his personal support, andwhatever money he can, to the worthy objectsbefore him.

Let us bring these principles home to our-selves. We, members of the Institute, form alittle community. First of all, we owe our al-legiance to our government. This done, wehave duties to each other and to the organiza-tions which exist for the common benefit of all.We have several such, and they are commend-able and deserve the support of every memberof the Institute.

This paper, in its infancy, has thus far metwith meagre support. A good part - the bestpart - of the fellows have shown an interest init; yet there are many who have met the at-tempts of its founders coldly. Selfishness is anexcellent indication of character.

We have an Athletic Club, organized for thepromotion of athletic sports and such exerciseas is necessary to the health of a student.

Only a few men deny the real value of thisorganization to its members and to the stu-dents as a whole, and these few men are prol)-ably afraid of being asked for a subscription.It is noticeable that they are always ready tocome and bring their friends to enjoy an after-noon's entertainment at the club's expense. Ofcourse the members are glad to have them comeand enjoy the entertainment that is provided bythe club for those that are members; but suchvisitors are like the men who avoid taxation butstill enjoy public benefits.

The result of this status is that the free-handed men have to carry the whole burden ofexpense and labor of any, scheme which maybe proposed. Now, the meanness of the menwhose selfishness will allow them to indulge insuch "sponging'" is utterly disgraceful to them,and to the institution to which they belong. R.

Some Wonderful Insects.SOMEBODY has said that the most wonderful

bit of matter the world contains is found inthe brain of an ant; certain it is that many of theant's doings show an almost human intelligence,and make us pause in the proud assertion thatwe only are God's reasoning creatures.

Many of the stories told of them seem almostincredible, but those which I shall here bringforward have all been well attested.

It is well known that ants have a means ofcommunication with each other in their long

7d sensitive antennas or "feelers," though howey manage to convey information through such

/channel is a mystery. They have also con-Jaerable faith in each other's statements, if onecan use the word here. When one of then dis-covers any food, he finds no difficulty, if themass is too large for his unaided efforts, inmaking known his discovery or in persuadinghis friends to accompany and assist him.

One naturalist put an ant in a pill-box with adead fir. The ant, after climbing out of thebox, went directly to his nest, returning soon

with seven friends, who climbed into the boxand carried the fly away piecemeal. As thefly was out of sight, their coming showed, ofcourse, their faith in their companion. Noth-ing shows the high intelligence of the antsmore conclusively than their co-operation inlabor. If they have to carry anything a longdistance, they do it by relays; one relay tak-ing it for a short space, then passing it on tothe next. Frequently one ant may be seenstretching and pulling at the leg of a dead grass-hopper, while another gnaws the tendons at thepoint of greatest strain.

But it is in their military operations that theirorganization is most apparent. When, as fre-quently happens, a nest of one species deter-mines to make war against that of another,scouts are first sent out, who discover the loca-tion of the approaches and entrances to theforeign nest. The attacking army then setsout under the guidance of the scouts, and com-manded by officers who run along by the sideof the marching column. The officers are read-ily distinguished by their smaller size and largeheads. They possess in their jaws a powerfulmeans of preserving discipline.

When the nest is reached, guards are postedat every entrance but one. Through this onethe attacking party enters, and the fighting ischiefly under ground. Such of the defenders astry to escape by the other entrances are put todeath by the guards outside, and it is usuallynot.long before the nest is in the hands of th'ebesiegers.- Then if the victors happen to belongto one of the species which are known as the"slave-keeping ants," all the eggs found in theconquered nest are transferred to the other,where they are carefully tended until the ants,thus born in slavery, are hatched.

The duties of these slaves vary in the differ-ent nests. In some they have to fight; in othersthey care for the eggs, turning them frequently,and taking them into the sunshine in fair weather.One species of fighting ants have jaws of suchlarge size and peculiar formation as to preventtheir feeding themselves. They are therefore

dependent on their slaves, who make a pulp ofthe food by chewing, and then transfer it fromtheir jaws to those of their masters.

Ants possess some mysterious means of dis-cerning between friends and foes. Let two antswho came from the same nest, or whose fatherscame from the same nest, meet, and immediatelythere is a most undoubted recognition; theytub antennae and show signs of pleasure atithemeeting. If, however, they happen to be fromdifferent nests, they proceed, on the. principlethat a stranger is necessarily an enemy, to fightto the death.

As soon as two hostile ants have fairly lockedtheir twelve legs together, they may be pickedup and put on the stage of a microscope, wherethey can be seen to fight in a style that puts toshame a Greeco-Roman wrestling match.

Certain species store under ground in autumnthe seeds of one or two grasses. When thetime for harvesting arrives, some of the antsclimb the stems of the grasses, and by bitingcause the seeds to fall. The ants on the groundbelow then take them and carry them by relaysto the nest, where other ants store them in under-ground chambers. And here the ants display aknowledge which exceeds our own; for thoughthese seeds are in damp chambers under ground,they rarely germinate. If, however, the ants-are driven away, the seeds speedily spoil.

All ants are fond of sweet things, and certaincolonies, as is well known, gratify their tastein this direction by domesticating, rearing, andpr-otecting the aphides or plant lice, which inreturn supply them with a sweet secretion.

Similar indications of intelligence might bemultiplied almost indefinitely; enough havebeen produced to show why the study of theselittle creatures is beginning to seriously modifythe views of those scientific men who hold thatman's reasoning powers differ not only in de-gree but in kind from those of the lower ani-mals. The Mechanical Engineers at Providence.

rTHE third and fourth year mechanical engi-neers made a pleasant visit to ,Providence

on the 10th of October, by invitation of Mr.Geo. H. Corliss, to witness a trial of the largepumping engine built by him for the city ofBoston. This engine was designed to pumpup to the surface the sewerage: delivered atMoon Island; but was rejected by the city,the contract being given to Mr. Leavitt, ofCalumet and Hecla fame. The Corliss engineis now to be used in connection with the Prov-idence Water Works. ,

The engine was set up in the yard of theCorliss works. It forced water from a reser-voir into a large vertical pipe, from the top ofwhich it was discharged again into the reser-voir, the average head being 47.22 feet. Theresults of the twelve days' test are unequalledin the history of pumping machinery.

The compound engine has two walking-beams, their common axis of rotation beingfifty-four feet above the ground. The beamsconnect at one end with the high and low pres-sure pistons respectively, and at the other -endwith a large fly-wheel. The latter is placed

betweenthe a the beams, the cranks being 900 apart.A Corliss upright boiler delivered steam atone hundred and twenty pounds' initial pres-sure to the eighteen-inch high-pressure cylin-der, whence it is passed, by a receiver, tothe thirty-six-inch low-pressure cylinder, andthence to a surface condenser. Both pistonshave six-foot stroke, and the steam was cut offat about one fifth. Four pump plungers,-three feet diameter, three-foot stroke,--twofor each beam, on opposite sides of the centre,delivered, one after another, eighty-five cubicfeet of water at each revolution. The numberof revolutions per minute was 27.5. Fromthree hundred and four indicator cards takenduring the trial, it was found that the meanhorse-power was 244.6, and that the coalburned per horse-power was 1.52 pounds perhour. The average actual duty for the wholerun was 111,906,926 foot-pounds for one hun-dred pounds of coal.

An advantage is claimed for the Corliss overthe direct-acting Leavitt pumps in the construc-tion of the valves. The weight of the hingedvalve of the Leavitt pump must be lifted bythe engine when the valve opens, and solid sub-stances may become squeezed in under the hingeand prevent the valve from closing. Mr. Cor-liss maintains that sewerage is liable to containsolid bodies, including even cats and dogs., Sohe puts the valve disk on one end of a horizon-tal lever, hinged at some distance from the diskitself, and attached at the other end to a verticalrod by which the valve is moved. The weightof the rod balances that of the valve, so that thevalve requires less power to lift it. A spring isalso connected with the rod. If now any ob-struction - a yellow dog, for example -pre-vents the closing of the valve, the latter is notinjured; and if the dog is not too large, he isat the next stroke carried serenely on his way.

Having wandered through the extensive worksof the Corliss Engine Company, the delegationof embryo engineers next visited the large estab-lishment of Brown & Sharpe, where they werecordially received and conducted through the

buildings. A great variety of articles is made -- by this firm, and much time might be profitably spent in studying their various special methodsand machines for doing nice, accurate work, aswell as the model system by which the businessis managed. The visitors were struck by theneat appearance of the shops and the careful pro-vision for the comfort of the workmen. Evenin the foundry, white curtains hung at the win-dows, the walls were clean and white, the roomwell ventilated and lighted, and made comfort-able by steam radiators.

After a short visit to the Harris-Corliss En-gine Works, the party took the seven-o'clocktrain for Boston. Such excursions may be madea source of much information af'd pleasure, andthe boys say, "The more of them the better."

seven wonders of the laboratory.Mr. Hall (embryo chemist) is slowly but

surely recovering from a painful wound, receivedwhile performing a difficult experiment.

The mechanicals have been doing some verygood practical work " indicating" engines duringthe past two or three weeks.

Gen. Walker visited the metallurgy, classlast Wednesday; hence the appearance of satis-faction and pride on the countenances of '82.

Mr. Lowe (chemist to be) was nearly blownup and burnt up by gasoline the other day.He escaped with only burned hands. Be cau-tious, dear brother.

The Senior Class has petitioned for instruc-tion and practice in the use of the Institute'sfire apparatus. Their petition has been granted.

The miners propose to have a day of fastingand prayer. The jewellers' sweepings of Mr.French have been at last agglomerated. Quitea successful run was made on Thursday.

A visit to the upper regions, lately made byone of the miners, found the mechanicals barelyalive in an atmosphere which would have rivalledthat of the Black Hole of Calcutta. It is his,opinion that unless they are more particular,some one will have to be carried home in apeculiar vehicle before long. Their health de-mands better air. Let then act immediately.

The regular students of '82 are divided asfollows : civil engineering, 2; mining engineer-ing, 5; mechanical engineering, 5; chemistry,6 ; architecture, 3 ; physics, 1; natural history,1. Total, 23.

JACK" JAC " ARREN has accepted a position inthe Exeter Machine Shop.

TuE person who borrowed the editorial um-brella need not feel called upon to return it.Let him regard it as a gift of charity. It willcover a multitude of sins.

Prof. R-- is bound to have his notes red;he always hits the nail on the head. "Is n't thatnobby ?"

As regards our petition about constitutionalhistory, we had better remain in the frying pan,had n't we ?

Speaking German is an expensive habit. Oneof our fellows tried it the other day, and paidtwenty-five cents for the privilege of saying sixwords. He entered the " Foreign Book Store,"and the following conversation took place:" Haben Sie ein Mfarchen?" -- Ja." - Waskostet? "- 'Fu f tund siebzig." Had our friendused his mother tongue, the salesman would haveunderstood that his customer was front the In-stitute and would have allowed him one third dis-count. "A little learning is a dangerous thing."

We hope that the time and money that theJunior Class have spent upon the integral cal-culus, learning how to compute areas, will notkeep them in a(r)rea(r)s the rest of their lives.

The regulars are classified as follows: Civilengineering, 3; mining engineering, 6; mechan-ical engineering, 7; chemistry, 3; architecture,1. Total, 20.

' A. L. Rotch, Secretary and Treasurer.The class of '84 entered the M .I . with

seventy-five members. It contained represent-atives fiom fifteen States, and from Mexico,Japan, and China. We regret to note the ab-sence this year of our Oriental friends, whowere called home during vacation. We followedthe custom of '83 by giving a Freshman ball;near the close of the second term we gave asmall party in the gymnasium, in connectionwith the prize drill. The latter resulted in theawarding of the prizes to corporals Hunt andBridgman respectively. The class was wellrepresented in athletic sports, a large propor-tion of both-the base-ball and foot-ball teamsbeing taken from its mnumlber.

We are now entering upon our second yearwith sixty-six members, four of whom are newmen. Five are mastering the science of curves," cuts and fills," and " trusses and draws";seven are becoming familiar with the variousparts of the steam-engine and the application offorces; nine are looking forward to reclaimingminerals from the earth by means of the pick

,and shovel, hammer and drill; while one isacquiring the science of beauty in combination,and nine more are mastering symbols, atomicweights, and molecular composition. Many moreare working with a view to the immediate re-quirements of the walks in life which they havechosen. THE TECII extends a hearty supportto all, and hopes to hear often from the variousdepartments in which the class is represented.

The Faculty have seen fit to refusethe petitioners, b)ut for what reason it is diffi-cult to determine. That the object of thepetition will yet be granted is a consummationdevoutly to be wished. The military drill, atits best, is one of those blessings that are forcedupon us; and to a large class, composed ofstudents who already have an acquaintance offrom one to six years with the allurements of"setting up," it partakes of the nature of a"dem'd horrid grind." Further, the purchaseof uniforms is obligatory, and by many of thestudents is undesired. It seems, therefore, inview of these facts, that the wishes of the Fresh-men, as expressed by so unanimous a petition,should ble respected.

If Coleridge, who wrote that on entering thecity of Cologne he " counted two-and-seventystenches, all well-defined and several stinks,"could have spent a part of last week in theFirst Year Laboratory, he would have voted bya large majority that the city of Cologne wasnowhere.

Copeland, '85, ran fifteen miles the other dayin the gymnasium. He showed. considerablepluck to keep up as he did, though the timewas not especially good.

N this, our first issue and the beginningof editorial life, the department of civil and

mechanical engineering would present its com-pliments to the other departments of THE TECH,and can but offer its congratulations on thebrilliant prospects of the career now openingbefore them. It also, with all modesty, mustpresent congratulations to the Institute at largeon its good fortune in securing the services ofso efficient a board of editors. Under the lead-ership of our noble chief, we may have goodreason to hope that our enterprise will speedilyWalk along to a prominent position amongpublications. We are sorry that the editor formining and chemistry has resigned; his otherduties proved too eng-Ross-ing. His successor,however, needs no further recommendation thanthat he is a member of '83. An interestingthough not im-mense field lies open to the editorfor '82. The other laboratory editor will some-times give us accounts of the miners' geologicaljaunts-on Saturday afternoons, including a dis-sertation on billiards as played at North Adams.Our artist will wield a mighty power, and theunwary youth may find the tolling of hi-Sknell-ling-ering long in his unhappy ears. In ourown department we shall strive to be alwaysFore han-ded, and have all our articles entirelyChaste. Our uncom-Munn-ly energetic adver-tisilg agent will fulfil his duties by filling ourbusiness columns with advertisements; whileour sporting editor will interest us by detailedaccounts of matters of athletic importance,probably including the running high jumpof two Saturdays ago. Last, but not least,though Little, our '85 friend worthily completesthe list.

The transformation that takes place in theshops at 4.30 p. M. -when the grimy, leather-aproned artisans from the forge or file shop arechanged into fresh-faced, charming youths--is sometimes rather startling, and reminds usof the advent of the beautiful butterfly I

SINCE last term the Architectural Departmenthas changed hands; and Prof. Ware, its

founder, has been succeeded by a corps of pro-fessors, consisting of Mr. T. M. Clark as head ofthe department, Mr. W. P. P. Longfellow asadjunct professor, and M. L6tang as assistantprofessor. The regrets in the department atMr. Ware's departure were, many and sin-cere. The students, and in fact the art worldin general, had come to look upon Mr. Wareand the Architectural Department as one; andwhen the first suggestion of his leaving us came,it seemed too preposterous to be entertained foramoment. The extreme popularity of Prof.Ware, and the real love with which all the stu-dents regarded him, make the part of his suc-cessors a peculi irly difficult one.

The students will soon be well acquaintedwith the new professors. The lectures on " C on-struction" by Prof. Clark have been very inter-esting. Prof. Longfellow is with the studentshardly enough to become acquainted at once.As to M. L6tang, his genial ways are wellknown to all. Besides the regular instructionof the department, lectures are expected duringthe winter from Mr. Van Brunt, Mr. Cmnmings,and Mr. Rotch, on " Ornament," " The Decora-tive Arts," etc.

There were many sad hearts in arriving at thelaboratory ten days ago; the solid chimneyswere in ruins.

That the drawing-room is not kept open untilsix is at present a great grievance with the reg-ulars.

The Seniors are now at work on a problem in-grouping. The programme calls for a frontis-piece, the drawing to be in color on double ele-phant, finished by Dec. 5.

Two. experiments made in Mr. Kidder's lab-oratory by Messrs. Coolige and Ely, on the ten-sile strength of cement joints, seemed to showthat the strength varies directly as the area.

LACK of space compels us to omit the reportof last Saturday's games. It will be given infull in our next issue.

SALICYLIC ACID is coming into general usein France as a disinfecting and sanitary

agent, and for the preservation of food.The' Austrian government has succeeded in

propagating sponges from cuttings in the AdriaticSea. The economy of the process is doubtful.

T. L, Phipson of England claims to have iso-,lated a new metal, which he calls actinium."It is silver-white and extremely brilliant."

A United States army surgeon, Geo. M.Sternberg, M. D., has discovered that humansaliva injected under the skin of a rabbit infal-libly causes the death of the animal, usuallywithin forty-eight hours.

Recent investigations on colliery explosionsshow that when coal dust is added to air con-taining so little fire-damp as to be harmless, themixture becomes powerfully explosive. Certainother forms of fine dust'produce similar effects.

Unsuccessful attempts have been made of latein England to apply Bessemer's principles to theextraction of copper from its sulphuret by blow-ing air into the burning pyrites. The presenceof compounds of phosphorus greatly facilitatedthe process.

Comets are popularly believed to be quiterare. Kepler, however, made the remark thatthey were probably as common in the heavensas fishes in the sea. Calculations fix the numberof comets at over three hundred thousand.

Nature, in a note on the laxity with whichAmerican colleges grant degrees, says, "Theaction of the American Association will, at anyrate, put people on their guard against Ameri-can Ph. D.'s, S. D.'s, as well as D. D.'s."

Perhaps the most suggestive of recent discov-eries is that of the German geologist, Dr. Hahn.He has found in meteoric stones which camefrom outer space an entire series of organic re-mains which he identifies positively as zoological.So far, only representatives of the lower orders-the sponges, corals, and crinoids - have beenrecognized.

OUR team played its first game of the seasonwith the Exeter eleven at Exeter, on Satur-

day, Oct. 29.The Exeters played well, and were superior

to our men in passing, but infinitely inferior inrushing, kicking, and tackling; which is ratherto be wondered at, considering our poor chancesfor practice and the good ones of Exeter.

Game was called at seven minutes past three,and the close of the first inning found us withone goal, zero for Exeter. In the second inningwe obtained another goal, and in spite of theExeters' "Brace up !" they were unable to ob-tain any advantage. Time being called, thescore stood two goals to nothing, in our favor.

Too much credit cannot be given Capt.Pratt for the skilful way in which he handledhis men, and to Haines for his brilliant runningand capital goal-kicking. As for the othermembers of the team, it is needless to say theyall (lid well,--the record of two to nothingagainst as good a team as Exeter's plainly showsthe fact; and Institute men may rest assuredthat, with a little more practice and experience,our team would rank with.the first.

At Amherst.

THIE game last Saturday between our teamand Amherst Agricultural College resulted in avictory for us, by the score of one goal to onetouch-down.

Our men forced the game throughout, andobliged Amherst to touch down three times forsafety. The match was played during a pour-ing rain, and our score would probably havebeen larger had the innings been of the usuallength, instead of half an hour each. Hillyer,by good running, made the' touch-down fromwhich the goal was kicked.
