next meeting is September 4th at 6 pm.
Join the Commission on Archives and History as they celebrate
the 150-year legacy that is the history of United Methodist
Women. All are welcome to attend our ninth annual Heritage/
Archives Retreat that will be held at Pine Lake Camp on Sep-
tember 6-7, 2019.
Friday’s highlights include: Wisconsin women in mission;
the creation of Northcott Neighborhood House; a premiere
of a dramatization of Wilma Hampel’s role in that process;
and the Rev. Dan Dick’s talk “As It Was and Ever Shall
Be—Women Lead the Church in Mission.”
Saturday highlights will feature: A local church historian
workshop where participants will learn about the preserva-
tion efforts to save the Rock Church in Livingston, WI;
have a chance to ask questions of our Conference Archivist;
and join in a time of sharing of memories about the UMW
and its impact.

"And souls that pray for water, cool,
clear, water"
These lyrics from a classic Marty Robbins
song came to mind while hearing of the
conditions in the immigrant detention cen-
ters. How blessed we are to be able to turn
on our faucet anytime we want and out
pours clear, clean water (hot or cold). It is a
daily convenience we take for granted and
while it is true we can never run out
of water, only 2.5 percent of Earth's water is
fresh rather than salty.
Some easy ways to save water....turn off the
faucet while brushing your teeth, take short-
er showers, always have full loads in your
washing machine and dish washer, fix a
dripping faucet. Many other ideas
and suggestions to conserve water can be
found on internet sites such as;
dnr.wi.gov, projectwa-
ter.info, wateruseitwisely.com, care2.com,
watercalculator.org.
Water conservation can reduce your water
and energy bills and is part of a conserva-
tion ethic----to use only the water we need,
to reduce the costs for treating and trans-
porting water, and to keep more water
available in the natural environment for
fish, birds, and other critters that make up
what is special about Wisconsin.
We are lucky to live in an area of water
abundance but we need to do our part to
reduce water waste and conserve this re-
source.
"Can you see that big green tree, Where the
water's runnin' free, And its waiting there
for you and me"

Volunteer(s) Needed
It is time for me to hand off the job of posting the
info on the north hill. I have done it for several
years and would appreciate it if someone would step
up and take over, perhaps best
to do it when its time to change
the sign after the strawberry
festival. I would be happy to
“show you the ropes,” the “ins
& outs,” or whatever you want
to call it. ~ Pat Turgeson

Volunteers Needed to Help Feed the
Homeless at Benjamin House
Just a reminder that there is a sign-up sheet
in the narthex for feeding the people at Ben-
jamin House on the 3rd Wednesday of every
month. It’s not difficult to do, it’s really ap-
preciated, and they do the clean-up.
Find a friend or two willing to help, make a plan together for the meal you will
serve (must be a full meal) then call the office (715-234-3919) to reserve your
month or stop by the narthex and sign-up. If you have any questions about any
of this call me (Steph) or Cheryl Hedgecock or Sue Tollander.
Diner's Delight Is Returning!
For those of you unfamiliar with Diner's Delight, four couples meet for a meal
4 times a year. You host once, providing the main entree and beverage. One
couple brings a salad, someone brings a vegetable, and another brings dessert.
(A couple is defined as two people).
We meet September-October, November-December-January, February-March,
and April-May. There have been brunches, lunches and dinners on each day of
the week. As host, try your best to find a time that works best for those as-
signed to your home.
You may try out a new recipe or share an old family
recipe. It isn't so much what's on the table that mat-
ters, as much as who's in the chairs.
If you are interested, please contact Ron or Jeanne
Parker at 715-234-8488 by August 18.
Thank you for the many cards and visits to Marv and I in his tri-
umphs and struggles over the past eight years. Thanks to Pastors
Jim and K. for visiting Marv whenever he was hospitalized. Pastor
Susan was very thoughtful explaining each item in the “Lent in a
Bag.” Their kind words and pray-
ers helped us through very diffi-
cult times.

New in the Library
The library will have a music stand with featured books
and a legal pad to sign books in and out.
This month the featured books are “The Five People You
Meet in Heaven” and “The Next People You Meet in
Heaven” by Mitch Alban.
Church & Society
The Church and Society committee needs your help.
As you know our church has become a dementia friendly church and we
need to continue this journey. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is on Satur-
day, September 14th at 8:00 located at the Moose Lodge. Last year we
started the Methodist Memories team and we need you to join our team
and make it even a bigger success. We want to show the community that
our church still means what we say and we totally support this
cause. Can’t walk the 2 miles? Don’t worry, you can still join our team
and stay at the Moose Lodge while the walk is going on (lots of people do
this). The walk is a fun experience that will lift you up and make you feel
so good when it is over. It brings together lots of people that are support-
ing this same mission. There is a short program before the walk, the walk
and then a small meal afterwards. We will also take donations if the date
doesn’t work out for you but you would still like to show your sup-
port. Just follow the steps to join our team and support our journey.
Go to act.alz.org. Click on Find a Walk
near you. Put in Rice Lake zip code
54868 on the bottom of the page and
click search. Click on Rice Lake on the
top of the page. Either type in The
Methodist Memories under find a team
and hit search or under teams listed click view all. Once you find The
Methodist Memories click join or donate (whatever you choose) and fol-
low the directions under The Methodist Memories.
If you want to join but computers are not your thing, contact Heather and
she will happily register you. Any questions contact Heather Madison
at [email protected] or call
at 715-822-3587 or 715-790-1428.
Together we will make a difference on fighting this awful disease!
CHOIR REHEARSAL
Choir will rehearse on Sun-
day, August 4 at 9:30 am.
We will practice for the ser-
vice on August 11.
If you aren’t in choir but
would like to check it out
please feel free to come!
Simple Symbiosis
Christians are like the several
flowers in a garden, that have
each of them the dew of heaven,
which, being shaken with the
wind, they let fall at each oth-
er’s roots, whereby they are
jointly nourished, and become
nourishers of each other.
~John Bunyan
Bound by Grace
Grace binds you with far strong-
er cords than the cords of duty
or obligation can bind you.
Grace is free, but when once
you take it you are bound forev-
er to the Giver, and bound to
catch the spirit of the Giver.
Like produces like, Grace
makes you gracious, the Giver
makes you give.
—E. Stanley Jones

A Day Away in a Quiet Place
Maya Angelou said, “Each person deserves a
day away in which no problems are confronted,
no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to
withdraw from the cares which will not with-
draw from us.” Similarly, when Jesus’ disciples
were consumed with ministry, he urged them,
“Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place
and get some rest” (Mark 6:31, NIV).
The late days of summer might be just the time
to seek “a day away” not only from problems
but even from ministry. While serving God and
others can be energizing, we must balance
work with rest. God set that example, resting
after creating the world; Jesus set that example,
calling his disciples away — not just alone,
but with him — to be refreshed.
Spend a relaxing day at a lake. Go on a scrap-
booking retreat or a leisurely hike with a
friend. Find a monastery that welcomes guests,
and experience 48 hours of prayer and silence
there. Invite Jesus into that time and space.
And remember another message he shared:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and bur-
dened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew
11:28, NIV).
