1. Alkionides Youth Charity Club

Years: 1 – 7 Venue: History room 15 Time/frequency: On an irregular basis depending on charity activity Youth Alkionides is a charity club whose sole aim is helping families in need. It operates under a larger community organisation known as Alkionides Cyprus. According to Greek mythology ‘Alkionides’ are the Halcyon days, the calm bright days in the midst of winter, which the gods gave to the kingfishers to enable them to hatch their eggs. Similarly, we aim to brighten the lives of families facing desperate times. As young people we feel the need to become more active and give up some of our spare time to those around us. Volunteer work includes various fund-raising activities throughout the year. Teachers in Charge: Ms M. Stavrou, Ms I. Koronaki 2. Art Club/Open Studio Years: All years Venue: Art Centre Time/ Frequency: Every week – Monday 1.45 The Art Club is a popular afternoon activity which attracts students of all ages of the school.

3. Arts and Minds Club

Years: 4-7

Venue: To be announced

Time/ Frequency: Tuesday 1:40 pm – 2:40 pm

Starting from September 2013, I take the initiative to start the «Arts and Minds Club» at the School

with the aim to promote the importance of arts, not only from the aspect of aesthetic pleasure, but

also to use it as a tool to cultivation of the critical thinking of the senior students. The club’s

philosophy is to embrace all branches of culture, from cinema and music, to architecture, dance,

graffiti etc.

In this spirit we can held discussions on arts, organise special tours to monuments and museums,

show movies, listen to music genres, organise a blog on cultural issues etc. Culture offers a huge

variety of activities that many students can take an interest on. I am pretty sure that the club can

serve as a fertile ground to encourage the promotion of arts and culture in the minds of the

students.

Concept of the Club: Culture and its values are not a privilege for the elite, but a basic, fundamental

need for every human being.

Aim of the Club: A closer insight to Arts and Culture

6. Blood Donation Location: Hall Time/ Frequency: Irregular Greek Room/Hall

Blood Donation has been a traditional activity of the English School. For many years our students

have been participating with great enthusiasm in this programme, taking part in a very ambitious

scheme which aims to cover all blood needs of Cyprus on a voluntary basis.

The teachers-in-charge and the students committee organise two main activities:

a) Members of the Pancyprian Blood Donation and Information Committee, present the whole

idea of Voluntary Blood Donation in Cyprus and how successful this effort is. They also refer to other

relevant matters i.e. hepatitis B etc. This lecture is for the 6th Formers only and is given in Greek.

b) The actual event of Blood Donation takes place in the School Hall, starting usually at 8.30

a.m.

The duration of this event cannot easily be predicted; this depends on the number of donors and the

possible health problems the medical team of the general Hospital will face.

The benefit of organising the Blood Donation at the School is obvious; it gives the students the

opportunity to cover very urgent needs of their teaching programme e.g.tests, practicals, and then

participate in this activity

7. Business and Economics Society Years: 4, 5, 6, 7 Venue: Room 16 Time/ Frequency: Once a week with surgeries The Society will hold meetings at least every fortnight – if not weekly-during which there will be a

discussion on economic issues, either current or more theoretical which may happen to be part of

the AL/IGCSE Economics courses. Students will be asked to find articles from the local and

international press that will be used as stimulus material to initiate such discussions. Occasionally,

we may also have the chance to watch a film which explores issues like globalization, poverty, debt,

the rise of emerging economies such as China and India, the current economic crisis and others.

Most importantly, the Society will hold regular surgeries during which extra help will be offered to all

our students in every year and course. Such help may take the form of re-teaching certain parts of

the syllabus that students would like to be exposed to once again to improve their understanding or

revision surgeries to help students cope with the needs of either the mock or final exams. The

overall aim of the surgeries is to address students’ individual needs in their courses.

The Society will also organize trips to local businesses and other events such as lectures by various

professionals on a number of issues.

The above activities will prove to be extremely useful to all those students currently studying Economics and/or Business Studies either at IGCSE or A level. Such activities will enable students to understand how theory works in practice and how it often fails. Also, the activities organized by the Society help in broadening the horizon of students with regards to current affairs.

Students also format a writing method through the process of writing and re-writing and they are given the opportunity to come in contact with the work of distinguished writers through a more creative way. The Creative Writing Club started three years and it runs its own blog spot “Grafouccino.” You can follow http://grafouccino.blogspot.com/. This year’s aim is to organise

17. DELF DALF Club Years: 5 and 6 Venue: Room 12 Time/ Frequency: Monday and Thursday for week A (girls 2 levels)

Tuesday and Friday for week B (boys 2 levels). Time 13:45 -14:30

The DELF DALF Club, which was reactivated last year after a few years of absence, offers the opportunity to ES students of French to enhance their knowledge of the language and the culture of the French speaking world. It will help students develop better skills in French and benefit from good use of the language through sessions of interactive communication. French learning students at the school will be familiarised with the format of the DELF DALF tests and offered the possibility to take the exam at the end of the school year in May and to add a DELF or DALF certificate to their personal statement. The DELF DALF examinations are fully based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages and evaluate six levels of aptitude. The European Union Council recommended using the CEFR to set up systems of validation of language ability. The six reference levels have become widely accepted as the European standard for grading an individual's language proficiency. The UK IGCSE (first sitting 2014) has changed recently and was adapted in line with these recommendations with regard to skills’ weighting. These exams are organized by the French Ministry of Education and are represented by the French Institute in Cyprus. The French Ambassador in Cyprus sends a commendation letter to high achieving students in the exams. This was recurrently the case for students of this club in the past.
