SUSTAINAbLE CLADDING

International Timber takes its responsibilities as a sustainable business very seriously, we are members of the Timber Trade Federation and also the World Wildlife Fund Global Forest and Trade Network. As a company we have a Timber Sourcing policy which is available to view on our website at www.internationaltimber.co.uk/environment-sustainability/environmental-policy. As a company we ensure that all timber products we source are from a minimum legal source and preferably a fully certified Chain of Custody supply.

Timber is one of the most sustainable and versatile construction products available due to its ability to absorb carbon during its lifetime and also the wide range of species that are available. It is also readily recyclable. We are however very aware as a company of the issues that can surround timber specifically that of illegal logging and the damage that this impacts on the biodiversity and the indigenous people in the areas in which it takes place. For this reason we work closely with World Wildlife Fund Global and Trade Network and Timber Trade Federation to ensure that we implement a robust due diligence system in order to remove the risk of International Timber or its supply chain contributing to the world’s deforestation. International Timber has chosen not to buy timber or wood products from certain countries and undertakes not to market certain species, specifically by following the recommendations of CITES or the IUCN’s Red list.

EUROpEAN TImbER REGULATIONS

The European Timber Regulation (EUTR) came into force in march 2013. This is designed to prohibit the trade of illegally logged timber within the EU. Importers who bring timber products into the EU are required to collect relevant information on products and carry out a due diligence process to reduce the risk of placing illegal timber on the EU market. All products sold and distributed by International Timber comply with the EUTR.

SUSTAINAbLE bUSINESS

We have also set ourselves a series of in house targets to save water, reduce our waste to landfill and our carbon foot print and we strive to promote diversity within our employees and ensure we provide a safe working environment.

We are constantly reviewing our policy to ensure that International Timber remain a supplier that can be trusted to provide good quality product from a sustainable source.

INTERNATIONAL TImbER external Cladding

Timber cladding is becoming increasingly more popular as a facing material, replacing brick or rendered finishes. When using the cladding for external applications durability of the timber must be considered.

Due to the wet and windy climate that we experience in the UK, building façades are best designed in the form of a rain screen. The design allows rainfall to be deflected but allows moisture that gets into or through the outer layer to dry out before it does damage.

Species such as Western Red Cedar and European Larch continue to be the most popular product for exterior cladding, but thanks to new modified methods other species such as Accoya and Thermowood are also widely used. These products achieve greater durability without the use of preservatives.

At International Timber you can be confident that species within our cladding range are suited to perform in external rain screen situations.

Coating

To prolong the appearance and enhance the beauty of your timber cladding, International Timber provides a choice of coating options. Recently developed by working with a leading chemist, International Timber is now offering their own high performance coating for external applications. We are also approved factory coaters for all leading paint manufacturers (Sikkens, Omnia and Teknos).

fire treatment

International Timber can help you specify the correct and most reliable fire treatment for external applications, complying with building Regulations.

technical information on Western red Cedar

DensityCedar is one of the lightest commercially available softwoods. It has a low density of 330-390kg/m3, making it an easy wood totransport, handle and erect on-site.

DimensionalstabilityIt has a very low shrinkage factor. It is the most resistant of allconiferous species to warping, twisting and checking.

DurabilityandDecayResistanceIts durability is rated as Class 2 durable, it can therefore be useduntreated if the sapwood is excluded. It conforms to bS 8417,giving it a 60 year service life for the untreated wood if sapwoodis excluded. It is highly resistant to decay and insect attack due tonaturally occurring fungicidal compounds in the wood.Western Red Cedar, if left unfinished will bleach to a particularlyattractive lustrous silver grey. however we recommend that it is notadvisable to use this species in locations where there is a high levelof pollution unless treated with a surface coating.

ThermalConductivityIts low density and high proportion of air spaces, makes Cedarthe best thermal insulator of all the commonly available softwoodspecies. It is far superior to brick, concrete and steel, helping to keepbuildings cool in summer and reduce heating costs in winter.

FixingsTo avoid discolouration of the wood use only corrosion resistantfixings such as those made from aluminium, hot dipped galvanisedor stainless steel. Nails and screws should be one third longer forcedar than those normally used to fasten hardwood species.

WeStern red Cedar (thuja plicata)

This species is an ideal material for use as exterior or interior cladding and is available with pEFC & CSA certification.

Western Red Cedar is naturally resistant to decay and insect attack. It simply seasons if left uncoated to an attractive silver grey appearance over a period of approximately eighteen months in areas with low air pollution. Cedar offers superior acoustic qualities too, helping to reduce noise or confine it to specific areas. It is also an excellent material for thermal insulation – in summer keeping the building cool and in winter preventing the heat from escaping.

CLADDING SIbERIAN LARCh

Siberian larCh (larix siberica)

International Timber procures slow grown Larch wood from Siberia which is available with FSC certification. The product is consequently denser, straight grained and contains less knots than Larch sourced in alternative countries in Europe.

Larch wood is a very strong robust wood with moderate durability and is resistant to rot and fungal attack, making it ideal for outdoor use. The timber is pleasing to the eye with warm colours: golden brown varying to yellow and orange in heartwood. Due to its high density, Larch wood maintains high wear resistance and is non corrosive. It requires no preservative treatment, and will weather to a silver grey with U.v exposure over a period of one to two years in areas with low air pollution.

technical information on Siberian larch

DensityThe density of Larch is between 470kg/m3/650 kg/m3 at 12%moisture content. This gives Larch a better resistance to impactcompared with Western Red Cedar.

DimensionalstabilityLarch exhibits minimal movement in a cladding application, however if sapwood is present the timber can be more susceptibleto movement.

DurabilityandDecayResistanceLarch is rated as Class 3, moderately durable, and if the sapwoodis excluded can be used untreated for cladding. however ifsapwood is present the timber requires treatment with an externalpreservative.

ThermalConductivityEuropean Larch has a Thermal Conductivity rating (λ10) ofapproximately 0.13 W/(mK).

FixingsTo avoid discolouration of the wood use only corrosion resistantfixings such as those made from aluminium, hot dipped galvanisedsteel or stainless steel.

DurabilityandDecayResistanceClear pine and Red pine Thermowood® has improved durabilitywhen used in above ground applications as the treatment processdestroys the rot-causing hemicelluloses which nourish fungi andbacteria. It also has high resistance to most decay fungi. Whilst itdoes not resist the biological growth of algae on its surface, thisaesthetically unpleasant but non-damaging occurrence can beavoided by treatment.

ThermalConductivityWhen compared with normal kiln-dried softwoods its thermalconductivity is reduced by 20-25%, making it an ideal timber forexternal cladding application with a λ10 in the region of 0.107 W/(mK).

FixingsWhilst nail holding strength values for wire and improved nails areconsistent with the values for European Redwood, screw holdingstrength is reduced by approximately 20% due to the altered stateof the cell wall during the thermal modification process.

thermoWood redWood

International Timber sources this material from Finland. It is available with pEFC certification.

Thermowood is produced by heat treating selected Scandinavian pine (pinus sylvestris) which changes the properties of the timber and turns a non durable timber into a product with class 2 durability (bN EN 350).

This thermal process enhances the chemical and physical properties of the timber providing many benefits which include greater stability, no toxic chemicals or additives, colour darkens to an attractive deep brown, timber can be cut or trimmed without the need to treat the cut ends. Thermowood will weather over a period of time to a silver grey appearance in areas with low air pollution.

Discolouration may occur in some situations.

imagine a solid wood that is sourced from fast-growing sustainable forests, has zero toxicity and provides dimensional stability and durability that exceeds even the best tropical hardwoods.

Accoya wood has been tested over prolonged periods in all types of weathering conditions – above ground, below ground and even in water and has been proven to withstand the toughest of external environments. The exceptional durability and dimensional stability mean that Accoya wood requires significantly less maintenance, because paints and stains stay where they belong: on the wood. In fact test results between Accoya wood and unmodified wood constantly prove that coatings last up to 3 times as long on Accoya wood.

Spanning eight decades of research, Accoya wood combines past and present scientific wood acetylation study with a proprietary production process to deliver reliable commercial scale results. The acetylation process used to make Accoya wood is entirely non-toxic and introduces no chemicals not already found in the wood. In producing Accoya wood, the chemical structure of the wood is modified from the surface to the core, providing outstanding and durable performance.

CLADDING mODIFIED TImbER -

hOW TO USE ACCOYA WOOD

Transportation and Storage – Accoya wood should be carefully transported and stored in a manner consistent with other high quality woods. This includes keeping it from getting wet shortly before being processed. The equilibrium moisture content of Accoya wood is quite dry (3 – 5 % in normal conditions). Wood measuring more than 8% moisture content is likely to have excessive “free” water and should be allowed to dry.

ProcessingAs a result of kilning and our production process, Accoya wood may have some discolouration. planing may be desired to remove surface decolourisation.

FixingsAlways attach Accoya wood with stainless steel fasteners and fittings with A2 or A4 (EN 10088-1) quality or A1S1 type 304 or 316 when possible. You may also use specially coated (epoxy, polyurethane) fasteners. preferably pre-drill for screws. Attach small pieces, such as glazing rods, with staples to minimise chances of splitting, 18 gauge A2 quality staples are recommended.

CoatingAccoya wood may be finished with semi and non-film forming paint systems such as stains and oils. The products tested to date show that oil- based systems are more quickly absorbed by Accoya wood than water. please refer to your coating supplier for advice about the best way to apply their products.

If using film-forming opaque and translucent coating systems, they should be applied on all sides with a minimum film thickness that corresponds to the requirements of the end product and/or paint supplier’s instructions. End grains should be sealed with a suitable product so the protection of all finished sides against water (liquid) uptake is approximately equal. please contact your coating supplier for further advice.

ApplicationsuitabilityAccoya wood offers unsurpassed dimensional stability and durability class 1 according to EN 350 – 2, EN 113 and ENv 807 in risk class1 to 4 according to EN 35 – 1. permanent contact with materials that are ph9 and above is not recommended.

INTERNATIONAL TImbER internal Cladding

KILNING

Kiln drying is essential for any hardwood or clear softwoods being used inside, due to the wood being hydroscopic. To reduce movement internal cladding is recommended to be kilned to moisture contents ranging between 13% and 19%. International Timber have 8 kilns located in our parkend facility, offering kilning services for internal situations on products which are not readily kilned like Western Red Cedar or timber which will go through the fire treatment process.

COATING

by working with a leading chemist, International Timber is now offering their own high performance coating for internal applications. We are also approved factory coaters for all leading paint manufacturers (Sikkens, Omnia and Teknos).

FIRE TREATmENT

Despite the many qualities, wood is a combustible material and is susceptible to the risk of fire. International Timber can help you specify the correct and most reliable protection for your internal cladding.

mAChINING

Standard cladding profiles are readily available of the shelf; however your job may require a bespoke profile. Our 7 day milling facilities enable us to machine profiles to suit your needs.

Cedar ShingleS & ShakeS

our range of Western red Cedar Shingles & Shakes add distinction to buildings across the uk. Shingles give a rich warm red colour, in time the natural effect of aging weathers this to an attractive silvery grey.

Cedar shingles are one of the most flexible cladding and roofing materials offering ease of installation on standard construction projects through to complex architectural buildings. Red Cedar contains a natural preservative which makes the wood durable in its natural state. International Timber can offer pressure preservative or fire retardant treatments where required for enhanced durability or fire safety.

CLADDING CEDAR ShINGLES & ShAKES

mainly used for roof and wall applications, shingles have excellent insulation and acoustical properties. Wood is a good thermal insulator, helping reduce heating costs in the winter months and keeping buildings cool in summer. With its low density, western red cedar is the best thermal insulator among the ordinarily available softwood species and is far superior to steel, brick and concrete. Timber has more sound damping capacity than most structural materials, Western Red Cedar’s unique cellular composition helps reduce noise or restrict it to certain areas.

Shingles and shakes are lightweight making them easy to handle, install and transport helping us look after our environment.

Weathering

All uncoated timber irrespective of species will eventually weather to various shades of grey, when exposed outdoors. If the effect is uniform it may be described as silver-grey.

Leaving a timber façade to weather naturally can minimise maintenance costs, but in many cases the resultant effect can have unexpected and inevitable characteristics. Unfortunately this uneven look can be viewed as looking cheap or drab and reflects badly on the timber. Therefore it is extremely important that designers and architects take this into consideration when drawing building designs.

the ProCeSS

When wood is exposed out of doors without a protective coating, the surface undergoes rapid changes to its appearance and texture; these effects are mainly due to exposure of the timber surface to a combination of sunlight and moisture.

The first effect to be observed is often a temporary brown staining as extractives in the timber rises to the surface where they oxidise.

Sunlight

Sunlight degrades the wood’s surface and in combination with moisture, enables satin fungi to flourish and cause the timber surface to turn grey. The degree of staining varies according to the duration and intensity of wetting. Roughening of the timber surface also occurs and the timber may split and eventually erode. These effects are driven by a combination of sunlight, water, mechanical surface and heat-weathering.

five StageS of Wood Weathering

1.Oxidisation

As timber dries, extractives accumulate on the surface where they oxidise to a brown stain. The effect is usually short lived, as rainwater will reach the extractives, although it can persist where the timber is protected from leaching.

2.Degradation

Timber is composed of fibres held together with a glue like substance call lignin.

Sunlight – Sunlight degrades the surface lignin, which is then eroded away as organic acids and other compounds leaving the fibres largely intact. Weathered timber surfaces tend to roughen as the fibres are exposed. The colour also changes; dark timbers bleach whilst light timbers darken.

3.staining

The greying of damp wood is generally due to the presence of stain fungi; on weathered timber fungi live off lignin breakdown leached down the surface. It can colonise timber surfaces after less than one year of weathering though the rate depends upon water availability. The effects are most pronounced on upward facing surfaces and those exposed to wind channelling, splashing or high resistive humidity.

4.splitting

Repeated movement of timber due to moisture fluctuation may lead to surface cracks. These will vary according to the timber’s characteristics and how the board is fixed.

5.Erosion

The surface of the external timber will slowly be worn away due to a combination of photo-degradation, mechanical abrasion by wind-blown particles and biodegradation. The rate varies depending upon site conditions.

CLADDING SERvICES

machining

We operate a unique 7 day shift pattern, allowing for very short lead-times on machined products. If the profile you require isn’t readily available, our bespoke machining facilities mean we can offer high speed machining on unique cladding jobs.

kilning

We have 8 kilns located in our parkend, Gloucestershire facility which can offer expert services for both hardwood and softwood solutions. Our experts ensure the timber is dried properly preventing the timber from warping, splitting or cracking, all common issues if the process isn’t done correctly.

Kiln drying is essential for any hardwood or clear softwood that is going to be used internally due to wood being hydroscopic (it absorbs and releases moisture until its moisture content is the same as its immediate environment). The main reason for kilning timber is to reduce movement, or for fire treatment purposes. It also strengthens the timber, makes it lighter and kills off any insect pest or fungi that may be in the timber.

International Timber is part of the Saint-Gobain Group, one of the world’s top 100 industrial companies. We are a member of the WWF buyers Guide - UK Forest and Trade Network and are committed to providing high quality products from well managed sources. We support the independent certification of responsible forestry, for example FSC®, and in line with Saint-Gobain Group policy we comply with all current legislation in place at the country of origin for timber purchasing.
