Exposures Newsletter - Summer 2019

From the Prez...

Your calendar suggests summer is approaching. However, continuous rains

and (fall) temperatures lead you to believe otherwise. With the official start

of the season, [finally] it's time to grab a camera and get outdoors. If you're

aware of an activity or an event, please post and share with club

members. It's a pleasure to enjoy the company of fellow photographers,

there is always something to learn in conversation and technique. We

remain an association of members with a common purpose, in gaining proficiency and supporting

one's camerawork.

I will be going to Janesville Warbird weekend July 19-21, (featuring a B-29, B-24, P-51, and C47). Then

Union Pacific "Big Boy" will be in Wisconsin and Illinois on there midwest tour July 26-30. These are

just two of an endless summer of activities, if you have any suggestions, let us know.

Regrettably these past few months, LCCC's calendar has been behind in planning/arranging

scheduled events, due to vacant positions, and speakers falling through due to conflicts. I would

personally like to thank, Liz Rose Fisher and Tom Brandt who have volunteered to find speakers for

our meetings; if you enjoyed a speaker please let them know. We are in search of an excursion chair/

committee for the upcoming year as John Rouse will be stepping down. Thank you to John for

volunteering for the last two years filling this position. If you would like to fill this position please let

me, or a board member know. Lastly, I would like to thank Tony Roma for volunteering for President

elect for the upcoming year, and Kimberly Shadduck for staying on another year as past

president. Save the date for our club yearly banquet at Reflection's restaurant, September 17th from

5:30-9:00 pm.

Jeff Fisher, President, Lake County Camera Club

From the Editor...

As you may or may not have heard, last month I have accepted the

position of President Elect for the 2019-20 season and I look

forward to serving the Lake County Camera Club as President for the

2020-21 season. As we close out another successful season for the

Lake County Camera Club, we look ahead to the new season and all

the joys it will bring including the four club competitions, monthly excursions, informative speakers,

and of course, the annual end of the season dinner banquet at Reflections Restaurant. Have a great

and safe summer!

The cover photo for this quarter’s issue of Exposures is courtesy of

Linda Kruzic. Linda’s photograph of “Gothic Arches” won an award

and received Print of the Month honors for Large Color Print in the

April 2019 club competition and an Award in CACCA’s April

Interclub competition. Linda writes, “This photo was taken inside

the Chester Cathedral in Chester, England. The interior of this

church was filled with magnificent architecture from hundreds of

years ago. I stayed quite a long time in the church taking a wide

variety of images. The thing that stuck me about this scene was the

light coming through the side window on the right, illuminating the

altar area.” Congrats Linda!

Who’s Who...

The Lake County Camera Club could not operate without the fine folks who volunteer on the Board of

Directors. The Board of Directors for the 2018-19 season are…

Kimberly Shadduck - Past President

Sue Baron - Secretary

Jim Ross - Treasurer

Water Drops

Written by Sue Baron

When you talk with fellow club members, more than

nodding ‘hello’ at a meeting, you can learn some

fascinating things about them. For instance, Tim Elliott

and I were talking at a Table Top Photo Shoot a few years

back. For the table top shoot, we had a simple plastic

baggie dripping water & we were trying to catch the

splash. Tim told me that he had built a double drop

emitter and showed me some photos that were amazing.

Over the next few years we talked about macro

photography. And then Tim volunteered to recreate his

double drop emitter! This was golden! In the next

months, Tim wrote a program to time the drops and put together equipment to drop the liquid.

In May, Jeff Martyka volunteered his space to hold a small

class. Cameras had to get close to the drop zone to

eliminate the back of the room and the water tray. Three

tripods were all that we could fit. It took a bit of trial and

error to get the perfect drop collide. Six people shooting

was the maximum we could accommodate in one night so

everyone could get a shot they were happy with.

Here are some shots of the set up and the resulting drop

shot. My results can be improved. Ask to see some results

from other folks who were there. What do you think? It was

fun shooting with friends and we will be doing it again. There is a wait list and those folks will be

offered the shoot first. Email me if you want to get on the list.

Join The Board

Written by Anthony Roma

Ever wonder what keeps a club like Lake County Camera Club so

successful? Members of the Board, that’s how!

The board members of the Lake County Camera Club are the backbone

of the club that continue to work together day in and day out to keep this

club as successful as it has been. LCCC is one of the largest clubs in the

Chicago Area Camera Clubs Association (CACCA). The reputation of LCCC

in the photographers world is highly regarded. Without the board

members doing their jobs, the club fails.

Ever wonder who sets up the excursions every month? Or who keeps

track of all of the competition scores not only for LCCC, but for CACCA

and PSA? Or think about how the LCCC website is so easily navigational

and simple to browse? Or think about who finds the speakers for our

monthly non-competition meetings? What about the end of the year

recognition dinner? None of these things would happen without the hard

work and dedication of the board members. Board members scout out future excursion sights and

locations so they can be presented as an attractive spot for club members to get together and have a

fun filled day of photography with their fellow colleagues. Board members go out and recruit speakers

to come in and educate club members on different aspects of photography or post processing

procedures. Board members run the in-club competitions as well as preparing and sending submitted

images to CACCA and PSA competitions. Board members handle membership dues, secures the

auditorium at the University Center for our meetings, arrange the Shutter Café reservations at

Hillside, sit at the welcome table before meetings, publish and print the quarterly newsletters,

maintain the library of periodicals, secures the judges for our competitions as well as send our judges

to other clubs for their competitions, and so much more.

And the Board needs help! Right now there are so many board members

pulling double or even triple duties to keep this club running and

successful through out the entire season. But we need your help! Anyone

in the club can step up and volunteer for a board position. It doesn't

matter how long you’ve been here. And anyone that volunteers to be on

the board will not be turned down. There is always something that can be

done.

So PLEASE… help keep the Lake County Camera Club a success.

Volunteer to be a board member. Talk to any of the present board

members to see how you can volunteer to help. Your time and services

will be greatly appreciated. So come on down off the fence, be a board

member.

Small Groups - Portraits

Written by Bob Kruzic

A couple of months ago five like-minded LCCC

members decided to start a small group

dedicated to learning and practicing the

techniques of studio portrait photography. We

have been meeting approximately every other

week at one of our houses weekdays during the

afternoon. The members of our group include

Liz Rose Fisher, Karen Gallwitz, Tim Elliott,

Linda Kruzic and Bob Kruzic. Two of us had

some experience in this area, while three of us

had little to no experience working with studio

strobe lights with various modifiers attached.

The focus of the group thus far has been

becoming familiar with the lights and other

equipment, experimenting with the looks different modifiers can

produce and getting more comfortable setting up and using the gear.

Up until now our group has been photographing mannequins,

trying to replicate various traditional styles and patterns of

lighting. At our next few meetings we plan on photographing

each other, which will give us practice in directing posing, which

wasn’t possible with our mannequins.

Eventually, we would like to find some people outside of our

group to be models for us, so if anyone knows of any attractive

and/or interesting individuals

who would like some pictures

of themselves contact Liz and

she can set something up.

Our group is an example of how

the “Small Groups” concept of

our club is supposed to work.

Club Excursions

April: Hawthorne Hollow

April’s excursion was a trip to Hawthorne Hollow Nature

Sanctuary and Arboretum in Kenosha, WI. Hawthorne

Hollow is a 40 acre private, nonprofit nature sanctuary and

arboretum of varied terrain offering 2 miles of trails

winding through the woods of the Pike River Valley, a

12 acre Arboretum, a variety of gardens, and three

historic buildings surrounded by prairie.

May: Magic Hedge

May’s excursion was an annual return trip to the Magic Hedge. A

small finger curling out into the lake, Montrose Point Bird

Sanctuary can boast in having over 300 species recorded,

including some of the rarest birds ever recorded in the state. A

small stretch of low-lying bushes and small trees on the west side

of the sanctuary in particular have been a magnet for migrating

songbirds and rarities. Some would say that the hedge seems to

bring birds in like magic. The nickname for this spot is fitting:

“The Magic Hedge.”

June: Old World Wisconsin

June’s excursion was to be a trip to Old World Wisconsin, an open-air museum located near Eagle, in

Waukesha County, Wisconsin. It depicts housing and the daily life of settlers in 19th-century

Wisconsin, with separate areas representing the traditions of different ethnic groups who settled in

the state. Unfortunately, due to weather, the excursion this month was cancelled.

July: Rotary Gardens

Janesville, Wisconsin, Rotary Botanical Gardens is an

award winning 20-acre, non-profit botanic showcase with

over 24 different garden styles and 4,000 varieties of

plants. Adult admission is $7.00, Seniors admission is

$6.00

August: An Evening in Milwaukee

Our neighbor to the north has a beautiful lakefront waiting

to be explored. From one parking lot, you can walk to

photograph beaches, yachts, sailboats, the famous art

museum, wooden schooner, a light house, blooming wild

flowers, evening city lights, light trails and skyscrapers with

a foreground of water.

September: Schlitz Audobon Museum

There is so much to experience at Schlitz Audubon! Hike

their six miles of trails through forests, prairies, wetlands,

and Lake Michigan shoreline. They are a Milwaukee

birding hotspot. See their Raptor Exhibit near the main

building entrance, where visitors can view a live bird of

prey, daily from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Currently, Sky

Walker, our Red-tailed Hawk resides there most days.

Visit Mystery Lake to see frogs, turtles, waterfowl,

muskrats, and other wildlife. This trail is wheelchair

accessible.
