Issue 13 > Friday 18 May 2018

On the morning of Thursday 10 May, the Year 10 Geography Class piled

onto a chartered coach to spend the day visiting a number of key locations

along the Adelaide Metropolitan Coastline. As part of the semester’s

studies, students have been learning about coastal processes, human

impacts and management strategies, and this excursion enabled students to

observe these concepts first hand.

Despite the wind and rain, we succeeded in reaching all of the desired locations throughout the day. Starting at Brighton Beach, students were able to examine the impact of storm water outlets and hard engineering coastal

management solutions, like rock walls, seawalls and guided paths. Further

to this, they also assessed the human activity on and around the beach while collecting a variety of qualitative data

on their surroundings.

The next stop was at Glenelg, followed by the Adelaide Shores Boat

Launching Facility, which enabled various perspectives on the impact of ‘rip-raps’ and ‘groynes’ on longshore drift, and the various options in place

to circumvent this impact on the coastal sand supply. Later, at the River Torrens Outlet at West Beach, students

mapped the unique impact of this artificially cut channel, and assessed its

environmental impact.

The final stop on the field trip was at the Tennyson Dunes, one of the

few remaining natural dune systems in greater Adelaide. This location provided one final opportunity to observe the coastline and see the

role of native vegetation in sustaining

coastal ecosystems. Based on all of their observations through the day,

students will take some time once we are back in class to assess the pros

and cons of a number of management strategies, consider the perspectives

of various interest groups and suggest some possible alternatives to enable greater sustainability of a fragile yet

vital part of our city.

SHAPING OUR PREFERRED FUTURE TOGETHER

15 Year Service This evening at a special dinner, we will recognise and congratulate current staff members that have provided 15 or more years of service to Gleeson College. You might be surprised to know that there are 21 current staff, teaching and ESO, who have worked at Gleeson College for over 15 years. This is great testament to the commitment of these people to our community, and no doubt, many thousands of young people have benefited from the guidance and learning experiences provided by these staff. Our new inductees this year are Assistant Principal of Student Development Mr Shannon Bertram, and Leader of Community Engagement and Innovation Ms Amanda Price. Congratulations to both of these leaders. We also recognise two staff that have completed 20 years’ service, Mrs Evelina Condo and Mr Richard Milne. All the staff that have completed 15 years’ service since our College began in 1989 have their name on a special honour board that resides in our staff room as a reminder of their dedicated service to our school community.

Enrolment InterviewsThese past few weeks senior staff have been conducting enrolment interviews for Year 7 and 8 2019 and 2020. It is

fair to say that here at Gleeson College we are currently facing unprecedented levels of interest from families wishing to enrol their children. I really enjoy these enrolment interviews where families and young people come along and outline their hopes and aspirations for the future, they reflect on their strengths and areas for growth, and they speak so highly of the reputation of Gleeson College in the community. It always fills me with pride when I hear so many positive comments about our students and families. Gleeson College students are proud to be a part of our community, and represent the school and themselves with great dignity and respect. Thank you for this.

Winter SportLast weekend the Winter Saturday Morning Sport season began, and I was delighted to attend a number of games where again our students represented the College so well. Our sport program, like a number of our extra-curricular activities, is crucial to the fabric of the College. It engenders a sense of belonging and camaraderie that supports good relationships between students. I thank all who are involved in any way, be that coaching, team management, transport or just providing positive support for our teams as spectators. In my over four years at the College I have not witnessed Gleeson College teams being anything other than great sports – humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

Plenary CouncilPope Francis recently granted permission for the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference to hold a Plenary Council in 2020. As Archbishop Wilson states, “The Plenary Council is a significant moment in the life of our church and an opportunity to plan for the future of the church in Australia.” The plenary council is the first of its kind for 80 years in Australia, and is an opportunity for all to engage in consultation regarding the future of the Church. There will be a number of opportunities to engage in this process in our school and Parishes, and it will engage all in a process of authentic listening and dialogue with stakeholders and Catholic schools will be encouraged to be involved. The journey toward Plenary Council will help us to prepare to listen to God by listening to one another. You will hear more about this as the weeks unfold, and more information is available on the website:http://plenarycouncil.catholic.org.au/This weekend’s Gospel reading is the wondrous story of Pentecost celebrating the early followers of Jesus receiving the Holy Spirit. “As the Father sent me, so I send you: receive the Holy Spirit”. What a wonderful time to launch the Plenary Council in Australia, an exciting opportunity to shape our preferred future together.

FYFE HOUSE MASS > ‘The Year of Youth’

On Wednesday, Fyfe students and staff gathered in the DRMC to participate in the 2018 Fyfe House Mass. Monsignor John Swann joined us to celebrate the Mass, which was beautifully written for

us by our College APRIM, Mr Adam Cibich. The Mass complemented our

values and ideals as a community, both as part of the Fyfe House and Gleeson

College, as a whole.

The theme reflected on our House motto, ‘Fearless in Faith’ well, and was ably supported in the readings

and prayers that were led by students who volunteered to take part. Each student demonstrated the qualities

of leadership as positive role models, inspiring others to act in their own

unique way.

‘The Year of Youth’ provided a foundation for the Mass and gave me

the opportunity to think about the wondrous deeds and culture of our

young people. I don’t have to look far to witness their ability to embrace the modern world and build relationships

with each other through shared passions of music, sport, education

and social justice.

The Fyfe House community participated in a reverent, respectful

and reflective manner to dwell on key questions about being ‘Fearless in

Faith’, particularly as Monsignor Swann challenged us to strengthen our faith through fearless endeavours, which exemplify a personal spirituality and highlight our willingness to venture forth and light an individual spark in

the world.

I look forward to sharing many more celebrations with the Fyfe House.

YEAR 7 MOTHER’S DAY CARD WORKSHOP > Celebrating Our Mums

During the month of May, we recognise the life of Mother Mary, and last week

our Year 7 students created Mother’s Day cards to celebrate and recognise their own Mums. Students came to Thomas

Library and were able to use many materials to make cards - flowers, glitter, jewels, stickers and ribbon proved very

popular, not to mention choosing just the right colours to suit Mum!

Thanks to Year 7 teachers, Mr Sellers, Mr Baker and Mr Biggs, along with

Mrs Fuller and Ms Gay, for their help in supporting the workshops, and

especially to Mrs Sergi for taking these great photos. We hope the Mums in our community enjoyed their original card

designs this Mother’s Day!

YEAR 8 HaSS > Black Death, the Bubonic Plague + Jam Berliners! Our Year 8 Humanities and Social

Sciences (HaSS) Class had the opportunity to recreate the symptoms of the Black Death and the Bubonic

Plague using jam berliners and custard on Tuesday. Students inserted custard

into the berliner and watched the reaction between the jam and custard.

The students engaged with this hands-on task really well and we even managed to infect the Principal who

attended as well!

Gleeson College opened the season against St Michael’s College in the second round of the Twilight Soccer League, after having the bye in Round 1,

on Wednesday afternoon.

The opening half saw us start positively whilst maintaining possession for large periods of time. Several good opportunities were created, but we were unable

to fully capitalise on our dominance of the play, with several good chances going wide or well saved by their keeper.

After the break, the game opened up and we were able to hit the scoreboard. A forward movement of sharp combination passing allowed Harrison Conant

(10 MSCOD) to run on to a well-timed pass from Isaac Mullen (12 FSHOL) to slot the ball past the goal keeper’s near post. The boys then continued to

assert their ascendancy; however, we were not able to add to the score. Some resolute and composed defending from the classy Cooper Nunn (11 MSCOD) and young gun David Mapstone (9 HMSCH) ensured the result was safe and

Gleeson were able to take maximum points from our opening game.

The 1-0 win against St Michael’s College was the perfect start to our Twilight

League campaign for the 2018 season and the performances of all the players involved were really encouraging. Cory Riccio (12 DSHUT) relished his role as First XI Captain and is looking forward to the season ahead stating: “It was very

good opening round performance from the lads and we can’t wait to build on the momentum for the next round”.

We now look forward to building on this result when we take on Prince Alfred College in Round 3 of the Twilight Soccer League next week.

The Gleeson Open Knockout Football Team ventured to take on Pedare and Golden Grove HS in what is becoming

an annual Statewide Competition opening round, at GGHS on Tuesday.

The first game of the day saw Pedare comfortably win over GGHS. Gleeson

then had back-to-back victories against Pedare and GGHS to earn ourselves a Round 2 berth. Gleeson had a hot start to the game, scoring four goals to one in the opening quarter against Pedare.

The opening major came within the first 30 seconds thanks to a long goal from Josh Ladegourdie (12 HSPLL).

The 2nd quarter was tighter, with goals much harder to come by, however Jak Kairl-Prosser (12 DSVAU) provided a

highlight with a big goal from outside 50. Both teams demonstrated a

commitment to the contest all day, highlighted by a courageous attack on the ball by Zach Wallace (10 MSSEL).

Gleeson took control again in the 3rd quarter, moving the ball effectively

and finishing well in front of goals. The final quarter was tight, as conditions

worsened. Overall, Gleeson displayed a well-rounded effort, running out comfortable winners over Pedare.

Gleeson played GGHS in very difficult weather conditions. The rain appeared to be set in for the afternoon and due to these conditions, scores were very difficult to come by. Once the boys adjusted, the ball spent the majority of the time in our forward half. This enabled our Gleeson forwards to capitalise on the scoreboard. Josh

Ladegouride, Leo Gal (11 FSMIL) and Caleb North (12 DSAKN) all kicked multiple goals. Gleeson defended admirably all day, keeping Golden

Grove scoreless.

Gleeson now advance to the next round and play Charles Campbell in what shapes up as a good match-up.

Thank you to those students who assisted with goalkeeping, field umpire

Josh Johnson and College President Trent Wallace for taking photos for the

boys on the day (see pages 10-11)!
