Estate carriage driveExplore Cragside in your car via the circular 6 mile carriage drive. Maximum dimensions for vehicles accessing the drive are 8'8 high (264cm) x 6'6 wide (195cm).

WalksThere are a selection of waymarked trails and over 40 miles of signposted footpaths across the estate. Why not explore the walk of the month?

PicnicsThere are picnic tables at the play area, around the lakes and at the Visitor Centre. Sorry - no barbecues, please.

Family funPlay area: Crozier car park: An exciting range of equipment where little ones can run off some steam.

Labyrinth: Nelly’s Moss car park: A network of paths and tunnels cut out of a vast area of rhododendron forest. Can you find Nelly’s den in the centre? Allow 1 hour.

What is Cragside?Cragside was the home of Victorian engineer Lord William Armstrong and his wife Lady Margaret Armstrong. Together, Lord and Lady Armstrong created Cragside, the first home in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity using Sir Joseph Swan's newly-invented filament lightbulbs. Come and explore Cragside, a home of wonder and gadgetry. Don't miss out on the wider estate: a once-bare moorland engineered to create a stunning Himalayan landscape. With a formal garden, estate carriage drive, lakes, woodland and walks, there's something for everyone here at the home of hydroelectricity.

*Exploring Cragside:Visit our map room, with a model of the estate and general information. A good place to start your visit and plan your day at Cragside, you can choose from one of our many waymarked walking routes here.

*ShopOur shop sells a variety of gifts, books, local crafts, sweet treats, as well as a wide selection of plants and garden products.

*Toilets Including accessible, baby changing room.

Things to see and doOpening times vary throughout the year, please ask a member of staff or check our website for more details.

*HouseThe house holds conservation demonstrations, talks and family activities throughout the year. Allow 1 hour.Baby slings/hip carriers are available to borrow. The team asks that large backpacks or carriers are left in your vehicle, or carried at your side or front.

*EatingThe still room is situated in the house courtyard, and serves a variety of hot and cold drinks, soups and snacks. Crozier's, situated at Crozier car park, serves a variety of hot drinks and snacks.

Iron bridge and formal garden: Cross the iron bridge and enjoy breathtaking views of the house, rock garden and valley. Continue along the path to the formal garden with its magnificent orchard house and views of the Simonside hills and Coquet Valley. Dogs welcome on leads.

Wildlife hide: You’ll find this in the formal garden car park. Come into close contact with some of Cragside’s wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled: you may catch sight of a red squirrel!

Armstrong Trail: This circular walk follows the course of the Debdon burn and offers fantastic photo opportunities of the house and iron bridge. The trail includes the Pump House and Power House, where Armstrong’s original hydraulic and hydroelectrical machinery can be seen. There are hands on models in the Power House to explain how hydroelectricity is generated. Allow at least 1 hour, steep climbs and steps.
