Key Terms in Immigration DebateWork in pairs and complete the first activity.
Read each word and the definition.
Write in the blank where you have heard the word before.
Denotation vs. ConnotationDenotation: exact meaning of a word.
Dictionary definition.
Connotation: suggested, or implied, meaning of the word.
Unauthorized vs. illegalOn a separate sheet of paper, write the possible connotations (suggested meanings) of the words unauthorized and illegal.
When done, share in your group:
1. Are responses the same?
2. Have you done something unauthorized? Were there consequences?
3. Is doing something unauthorized the same as doing something illegal?
ReadRead the article on the second part of the handout from the New York Times.
After this, use the “Connotation” handout. Split the vocabulary list up among your group, so each person should have 1-2 words to use for the connotation web. Take out extra paper if you have 2 words since you only have 1 connotation web.

RereadRead the article again, keeping in mind the connotations of the vocabulary words you have just discussed.

2. Is it better to use illegal alien, unauthorized immigrant, or undocumented immigrant? Or does it not matter?
Activity- Letter to the editorNow, write a letter to the newspaper editor advocating one of the following views.
1. Urge them to adopt the term “unauthorized immigrant,” explaining why it is the best term.
Or
2. Urge them to use any term (illegal, alien), explaining why you feel it does not matter.
