Eppington: Chesterfield’s Jefferson Connection

Take a guided tour of Eppington Plantation, one of the oldest historic structures in the area. Thomas Jefferson was a frequent visitor to this house, built in 1770 by his brother in law Francis Eppes VI. This former tobacco plantation home has remained virtually unchanged since its construction. Visitors will discover Eppington’s link to the Revolutionary War and its unique role in Chesterfield’s history. 1 hour

Mondays at the Museum

Explore the history of Chesterfield County, and discover the many firsts the County claims, from coal mining and iron production to the first railroad and the second permanent English settlement in the New World.

Visit a replica of an early 20th century Country Store and imagine life in a bygone era. An interactive activity completes the museum experience.

Then take a tour of the historic Courthouse Green, where Continental soldiers

trained and endured great hardship during the Revolutionary War. 1 hour

Life on the Plantation

Built in 1822, Magnolia Grange Plantation presents life as it was for generations of Chesterfield families. Take a guided tour of the home and grounds while learning about daily plantation life. Examine archaeological maps and findings made in recent excavations. The house tour features an interac-tive activity to enhance students’ understanding of 19th century life. Tour the herb garden, and learn about the importance of herbs for flavor, medicine, fragrance and pest control. Make a fragrant sachet to take home. 2 hours

Did you know that Midlothian was the site of the first commercial coal mines in North America? Take a guided tour of Midlothian Mines Park, and view one of the last standing stone structures that was once part of the pioneer coal industry. Learn about the first gravity railroad and the impact that coal mining had on the region.
