Summary

• Recent experiments of availability investigation for High performance application demonstrations

• Proposal to equipping measurement machines every networks

Page 3: Experience of High Performance Experiments

Requirements

• Osaka University was planning HDTV over IPv6 demonstrations in NPACI AHM in March 2003– 100Mbit/s +

– From Osaka to SDSC

• Washington University was planning HDTV demonstration in APAN Busan Meeting– 220-250Mbit/s

– From Portland to Busan meeting venue

Learn from Osaka University HD application

• Every hop measurement is important to find where loss occur– Install PC equipping iperf as much as possible

• Osaka Univ, Tokyo Univ, SDSC (NPACI AHM venue)

• Long period (5 min – 30 min) period avilability should be checked– At last, the demonstration experienced unperiodically

burst loss, even iperf test with short period test was clear.

• Seek Shaping parameter in JGNv6– Multiple Project establishes PVCs over Japan– Service is UBR

Lesson for HD application (Aug. 25)(Cont.)

• Tokyo/Genkai XP– The first high bandwidth stream transmission by the real application

through APII link between XPs• Japan Gigabit Network

– ATM Multiple OC12 links– Multiple Project establishes PVCs over Japan– Service is UBR

– Multiple measurement machine was prepared in both XPs• All machines equip IPERF.

– ATM-II PIC for Juniper M20 was installed at Tokyo XP to enable over 270Mbit/s shaping for a PVC.

• Other Parts– Juniper supported to provide the Routers at ends of US/JP link.

• US/JP link (OC12 SONET) is donated from Tyco to WIDE Project.– Measurement machines equipping IPERF were installed at SRC/DST

points.

Page 8: Experience of High Performance Experiments

Learn from preparation of HD application

• Multiple measurement point worked very well to find where loss occurs.– End-to-End test is important besides hop-by-hop test.

• JP src test didn’t shows loss but US src did.

– Multiple measurement was done at the same time.• Need some usage information sharing method

• Genkai Link has periodical loss– Another measurement machine is required to figure out what

happens and where it is.

• Large burst size worked for real time application.– rtVBR: Peak=540Mbit/s, Sustain=500Mbit/s, Burst=4K

• JP-KR link and some part of APAN Tokyo XP started to support Jumbo frame.

Page 9: Experience of High Performance Experiments

Proposal form preparations of several demonstrations

• Performance measurement machine is getting required in every measurement point– Multiple machines should be installed to enable local loop test– UDP/TCP over IPv4/IPv6– Authorized operators and users share machines in multiple points– Measuring status (who, how much bandwidth, how long) should

be precisely updated and opened to users of measurement machine– Web based operation may helps app users to have test by them

selves

• High performance Application using APAN/TransPAC increase. The each apps. requires more bandwidth before.

• Number of HP apps use or demonstration is also getting increase– Providing measurement tool to such user helps to investigate problems by themselvs
