If you’ve never been a part of the Rock Chalk Chant, one of KU’s greatest traditions, experience it now.

irua.ku.edu/chant

In the roar of celebration and in quiet contemplation, you find it. In buzzing activity and beating hearts, you hear it. Our chant. It inspires. Evokes. Echoes. Rises.

Page 3: experience it now. - irua.ku.edu major while counting toward a degree ... Our chant crowds out doubt. Calls us to ... and tens of thousands of Jayhawk alumni

Our chant transforms us into a chorus. A force for good. A family. A “we.”

ORT

If a project or subject poses a challenge, Jayhawks can turn to fellow students who tutor writing, math, and other subjects for the university.

STARTING SUCCESSFULLYPrograms created by the International Student Services office will ease your transition into the United States. After you arrive at KU, you’ll participate in the weeklong You at KU International Student Orientation, where, you will

• Get help enrolling in classes• Tour the KU campus and the city of Lawrence• Get your KU identification card, called a

KU Card• Discuss U.S. culture, customs, and adjustment• Attend sessions on legal issues, maintaining

your immigration status, safety, campus resources, health, clubs and organizations, and other topics

You’ll also attend Jayhawk Jumpstart, a program for all new KU students on health, wellness, and social justice. Before the semester begins, you’ll go to Hawk Week, the official welcome week for new students. At Hawk Week, you’ll learn about student organizations, university programs, and KU traditions. Hawk Week activities include a job fair, movies, dances, and free food.iss.ku.edu/newly-admitted-orientation

SEEKING SUPPORTYou’ll continue to receive support during the year through a series of ISS programs that introduce you to the United States and KU and allow you to present your culture to the campus. Also, an ISS student resource coordinator can help you learn time management skills and adjust to the challenges of attending a major U.S. university.

UNDERSTANDING STATUSExperienced immigration advisors at the International Student Services office will help you manage your immigration status to keep your educational experience on track. They are experts in F-1 and J-1 regulations and will assist you in getting permission to work on or off campus.

Like a discovery, our chant breaks silence, rousing the ready to action.

In the 2016 Review of Public University Honors Programs, KU’s was one of only 11 nationwide to receive a perfect score.

ENRICHING YOUR EDUCATIONNo matter which of our 200-plus fields of study you choose, you’ll expand the breadth of your academic pursuits through programs that challenge and inspire you: • The Office of Study Abroad helps students

take their education to new places, and supports those students with $400,000 in scholarships every year. studyabroad.ku.edu

• University Honors Program participants receive personalized advising and priority enrollment, take small honors courses, and have opportunities for scholarships and honors housing. honors.ku.edu

You’ll discover even more programs that fit your plans as you progress toward graduation.

BRANCHING OUTAs you work toward your degree, an experiential learning certificate can lead you down unanticipated avenues and help shape your interests and values. KU offers seven certificates:

• Service Learning• Entrepreneurship• Arts Engagement• Global Awareness• Leadership Engagement• Research Experience• Sustainability

All certificates require a combination of course work, real-world experiences, and reflection. experience.ku.edu

DECIDING WHAT TO STUDYSome students arrive at KU knowing exactly what they’ll major in. Others are still deciding. We can help you no matter what your situation is.

If you’re still deciding, talk to your advisor about courses that sound interesting. Your schedule will include some required general education courses and some courses that allow you to explore your interests.

Almost every program has built-in time to take classes that will help you decide on a major while counting toward a degree program and keeping you on schedule for graduation.

Over 27 percent of undergraduate Jayhawks study abroad.

INTERNATIONAL RENEWABLE SCHOLARSHIPS (Apply by Feb. 1 for eligibility)

Undergraduate international students may enter KU in one of three ways — through the Applied English Center, the Academic Accelerator Program, or standard entry. Your entry to the university will depend on your English skills, need for academic support, and readiness for U.S. college course work.

APPLIED ENGLISH CENTER The AEC offers English language instruction for speakers at every level taught by instructors with master’s or doctoral degrees. AEC students practice speaking in small conversation groups and participate in activities and events that increase their understanding of U.S. culture. The AEC also provides comprehensive advising services to help students adjust to the U.S. educational system and prepare them for academic success.

Your scores on the English placement exams you take here will determine whether you need this intensive English preparation or can start your degree course work immediately. Depending on your academic major, you may be eligible to earn up to nine academic credits for the upper level English language courses that you complete. You may apply to study in the AEC program, even if you aren’t planning to become a degree-seeking student. There are a variety of short- and long-term

ENTR

Y

options available for non-degree students, as well as those planning to complete their degree at KU. When you’ve successfully completed the AEC program and decide you would like to continue your studies, you can enter KU’s Academic Accelerator Program or apply for standard entry to KU as a degree-seeking student.

ACADEMIC ACCELERATOR PROGRAMIn the AAP, you can take freshman-level courses and get academic support, including advanced academic English instruction, that’s tailored to your needs. You may be in the program from one to three semesters depending on your level of English proficiency. accelerator.ku.edu

STANDARD ENTRYStudents applying for standard entry into KU may be admitted directly to their chosen major of study without meeting a minimum English proficiency requirement. You may qualify for enrollment in academic course work by providing English proficiency through one of the many accepted waiver options during the application process or by taking the English placement exam during You at KU International Orientation once you arrive on campus. Depending on your test results, you might take one to four semesters of comprehensive English or you might be able to start your degree courses immediately. Learn more about all available English proficiency waiver options at irua.ku.edu/english-requirements

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS To enter KU as a freshman, you must• Provide evidence of high school graduation with a

curriculum that would prepare you for university studies in your home country. (To learn what qualifies you for admission to KU’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences visit irua.ku.edu/credentials)

• Have a GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale• Submit English placement test scores. (Scores are

used to determine English proficiency or to estimate students’ placement in an appropriate level of ESL courses.) There is no minimum English requirement for undergraduate admission.

ADDITIONAL REQUIRED MATERIALSIf, after high school, there was a period longer than 3 months when you were not enrolled in an educational program, you must write a short statement about your activity during that time. If you attended courses of any kind, include that information.

In addition to transcripts or mark sheets, you must present an official diploma or graduation certificate, official examination results, or other proof of graduation specific to your country. We use equivalent admission criteria for applicants from all countries and provide credential evaluation. All transcripts should be translated into English, but an outside credential evaluation is not required. Meeting the minimum grade point average does not guarantee admission.

SAT INFORMATIONIf you are submitting an SAT score, KU will use concordance tables to determine your highest scores based on the version of the SAT test you took. (The scale for scoring the SAT changed after March 2016. KU accepts scores from both SAT tests.)

Our campus is a composition: carillon bells, whistling steam, the rustle of leaves, and one chant, rising.

CALLING LAWRENCE HOMEFounded by abolitionists in 1854, Lawrence has been fed by those with an independent spirit. Today, nearly 90,000 residents carry on the values of its founders: tolerance, optimism, and community.

DINING LIKE A LAWRENCIANWhen Jayhawks feel like a bite to eat away from the Hill, they have options that rival any major city. You can expect to have any craving satisfied, whether you’re picking from a long list of ethnic cuisines, prefer fine dining, or just want a burger and fries.

SCOUTING OUT DOWNTOWNYou’ll spend whole days perusing the shops, art galleries, and boutiques of downtown Lawrence, primarily centered on Massachusetts Street. And once the sun sets, you can catch a movie, band gig, or DJ night downtown most nights of the week.
