Aquatic Students' Association in University of Sri Jayawardenapura was established by students who follow Aquatic Resources Management course as undergraduates under guidance of Prof. M. M. Pathmalal and Dr. R. R. M. K. P. Ranathunga in year 2010. Currently, about 60 members actively participate programmes conducted by the Association.Since 2010 the Association has conducted many programmes which aid public to get familiar with Aquatic Resources and to improve the awareness of proper maintainance, management and protection of them. Finally by providing information on these programmes we have been able to provide more opportunities for the students and public to gain knowledge and use it in developmental activites in the country in a sustainable manner.

The Center for Sustainability (CFS) is a body for professional environmental services, research and extension attached to the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science (DFES), University of Sri Jayewardenepura. CFS is a faculty-directed organization that supports the broader efforts of DFES to ensure environmental protection and sustainable development in the country through productive University-Industry linkages and partnerships.Being the first one of its kind to be established at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, the CFS is committed to produce a new breed of responsible stewards of environment through promoting the concept of sustainability among corporate sector, general public, university academia and students, primarily through professional support, education and awareness.

Department of Forestry and Environmental Science is the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka, which offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Forestry and Environmental Science. We have been able to reach wide horizons in training professionals who are capable of contributing effectively to the country’s development process. About 450 students have been trained since 1983; many of them are employed in forestry and environmental sectors.

ThemodeladoptedbyEDEXThinkGreenrevolvesaroundawarenesscampaigns,primarilyrelyingonlectures.Thesewillbeconductedinordertoguideandmotivatepeopleonsustainableliving,basedontheSustainabilityMasterPlanjointlydevelopedbyEDEXandRoyalCollege.Theseactivitiesaimtocreateawarenessamongschoolstudentsongreenlivingandsustainability,eventuallyguidingthemtobesociallyresponsiblecitizens.

EDEXThinkGreenplayedakeyroleinobtainingtheGreenMarkGoldPlusratingfrombyCeylonInstituteofBuilders(CIOB)andtheGreenSLGoldratingfromtheSriLankaGreenBuildingCouncilfortherecentlybuiltLoyaltyPledgeGreenClassroomComplexatRoyalCollege.Furthermore,withthesupportofEDEXThinkGreen,RoyalCollegealsowonGoldatNationalGreenAwards2015.Havingsupportedawarenesscampaignsandrainwaterharvestingprojectsatotherschoolsinthepast,EDEXThinkGreenplanstoexpandits365DaysActivitiesasawayofeducatingstudentsandacademicstaffmembersonmakingtheirownschoolgreenerbysharingtheknowledgegainedbytheseactivities.

Anotherobjectiveof365activitiesistoincreasethecorporateengagementwithSustainabilityrelatedactivities.Anissuefacedbymanycorporatesisthelackofhumanresourcesoraplatformtoengageinsuch.WiththevoluntarybaseandthenetworkofEDEX,especiallywiththestrongtiesthatEDEXhaswithschools,corporatescancollaboratewithEDEXThinkGreeninordertoreachoutschoolstudentsandyouthingeneral.

Moving away from the traditional sponsor based activities, EDEX Think Green looks forward toestablishlongtermrelationshipswithcorporateentitiesaswellasotherorganizationswithafocusonsustainability.Furthermore,theactivitieswillfocusmoreoneffectivenessthanthecost,ensuringtheapproachitselfwillbesustainable.

With global warming etc. happening, humansstarted thinking of the environmental impact ofouractivities,onlytorealizethatfurtherdamageneedstobeminimized.Conceptof 'GoingGreen'camewiththat,inordertolookfor'greener'orinotherwords,moreenvironmentfriendlywaysofliving. This came not only with environmentalbenefits but also economic benefits, such as thelesser environmental impact of Hybrid Vehiclestiedwiththelowerfuelcosts.

Towards theendof the20thcentury,expertsstartedpredicting issuessuchasoverpopulation,runningoutoffossilfuels,risingseawaterlevelsandpossibleshortageoffood.Withsucheconomicandsocialchallengesanticipated,theworldsawthegreenconceptsasasilverbulletofaddressingthesechallenges.Inthewakeofthe21stcentury,Sustainabilitycametothelimelight,takingtheGreenInitiativestoawholenewlevelandconcerningthecarefuluseofscarceresources.
