CEO Update
A great month for the Entrepreneurial Development Team. TEDxRenowas amazing and the result of months of work and an army of volunteers andsupporters that made this year's event the best ever. More on TEDx below. Last week EDAWN received not one but two Gold Awards at theInternational Economic Developers Conference for entrepreneurialdevelopment initiatives. The first ever Gold Awards from IEDC in the state!Quite a compliment to the efforts in the region to grow our entrepreneurialecosystem. View the Awards. The EPIC Report with Actual Numbers is out! EPIC Report. Lest weforget that this is just a set of projections based on the best availableinformation and committee agreed upon assumptions. That is why it isexciting to see the actual numbers of jobs and population for 2015 overlaidon the projections provided in the report. Theypresented an overview of Switch that helped to explain why Switch is somuch more than a just data center. The addition of Switch, the largest datacenter in the world, with hundreds of fortune 500 company clients (EBay isthe first) and the SUPERLOOP, will accelerate the growth of technology andmake RenoSparks one of the most connected communities in theworld. Business Development and MarketingThree new manufacturing companies were announced, adding 260
jobs to the region.
· AZZ Galvanizing, 60 jobs , Storey County· Deceuninck North America, 80 jobs, Fernley· BI Nutraceuticals, 120 jobs, Storey County The BD team added 15 new leads/projects and hosted 12 site visits
this month.
Stan Thomas attended the Industrial Asset Management Council
(IAMC) in Cleveland where more than 500 corporate executives,
economic developers, and site consultants convened. This was timewell spent in the field, where Stan met with 21 site consultants to discusspotential opportunities in Northern Nevada.
Entrepreneurial Development TEDxReno 2015 was a great success! We want to make a special shoutout to Vision Control who really made it all possible by bringing in, settingup, and manning all of the Audio, Visual, Lighting, & Wifi & NetworkTechnologies at the Lear Theatre. competition and the intent to compete is open until October 31,
2015. The competition was established by the College of Business at theUniversity of Nevada, Reno (UNR) to develop the entrepreneurial capacitiesof students and facilitate the creation of new businesses in Nevada. Hack for Reno is putting a twist on things this year... historically it'sbeen a weekend hackathon event to build apps that create a more informedand engaged community in the city of Reno. This year, they're hosting thefirst Hack For Reno Summit, a day of short talks, panels and activities thatwill explore the intersections of technology and government. Become apart ofthe conversation & check it out! There are a lot of entrepreneurial events happening throughout theregion! Don't forget to check the calendar and list your event byutilizing Reno Startup Digest. 1 Million Cups Every Wednesday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. at SwillCoffee and Wine. Business Retention|Expansion & WorkforceThe BR&E team visited 11 companies in September, all of whomreported current or future growth. The team's time was spent on visits,working with nominees for the upcoming 4th Annual Existing IndustryAwards to be held October 22nd, and ramping up the new WorkforceDevelopment program. Lastly, please view the updated Existing Businesssection of the EDAWN website which includes a downloadable PrimaryCompany List, Business License Information, Education and WorkforceContacts, information about Incentives and our two IndustryRoundtables. Coming soon is a Business Tool Kit which will contain a varietyof useful information for existing primary companies in the region.
The Workforce Development Program Manager, Valerie Cotta, hasstarted to connect with top companies to drill down on workforcerequirements and opportunities. The goal of the program is to identifycommon areas where community resources and solutions can be focused.

Partner UpdatesThe newly formed Governor's Office of Science, Innovation andTechnology is introducing a new Science, Technology, Engineeringand Math (STEM) Workforce Challenge Grant which was establishedto promote, coordinate and align STEM workforce training with theneeds of Nevada's employers. Responses are due by October 16th, 2015and grant awards of up to $150,000 are available. The overall funding is $1Mfor the first year. For more information, go here.

The William N. Pennington Foundation has given an historic $4.3million donation to Truckee Meadows Community College Foundationthat will significantly benefit workforce training in NorthernNevada. TMCC will use the multimillion dollar donation to complete thesecond phase of renovation and remodel at the Edison site, and to inauguratea unique Technical Pathways option for high school students. The Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) has receivedfederal funding of $300,000 through the State Trade ExportPromotion Grant (STEP) program administered by the U.S. SmallBusiness Administration to help fund ongoing initiatives in thecountries of the People's Republic of China and Poland. With the STEPgrant funding, GOED's International Division plans to subfund grants tocompanies to enable participation in stateled trade mission to China'sJiangsu Province in March 2016, and a stateled trade mission to Poland inMay 2016.
