DIRECTOR OF HOUSING
THE COUNTY
San Mateo County is located in the heart of the San
Francisco Peninsula. It offers a wide range of recrea-

THE POSITION
Reporting to the Deputy County Manager, the Director
of Housing will plan, direct, and oversee the functions
and activities of the Housing Department. This a highly
visible executive leadership role in which the Director
will collaborate closely with individuals and organiza-
tions in the public, private, and nonprofit sector to cre-
ate new housing and rehabilitate existing housing.
There are 65 staff members in the department, 49 of
whom work in the Housing Authority.

The Department of Housing collaborates with partners
as a catalyst to increase the supply of affordable hous-
ing and create opportunities for people at all income
levels and abilities to prosper by supporting livable and
thriving communities. The annual budget for the depart-
ment is approximately $177 million.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
As an advocate and catalyst for the creation of housing, the new Director will be a charismatic leader and progressive
visionary. As a leader, the new Director will create an environment of trust and partnerships in building diverse coalitions
with all stakeholders.
More specifically, the ideal Director will be:
• An experienced leader with a sound understanding of the complexities of housing, land use and financing issues.
• An approachable and politically astute leader with a man-
agement style that quickly fosters trust, loyalty, respect,
commitment, and partnership.
• A strategic thinker and planner whose vision is balanced
with realism.
• Eloquent and persuasive, as an ambassador for housing
development.
• A consensus builder with superior negotiation skills.
• An action and results-oriented leader.
• Astute in resolving highly controversial issues in a partici-
patory and effective manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that would
likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
• Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited
college or university in finance, business or policy ad-
ministration, public policy, or related disciplines.
• Experience: A minimum of six years of progressively
responsible experience in housing development and
rehabilitation, planning or a related field, at least two
years of which involved directing, planning, organizing
and coordinating housing programs.
A Comprehensive Total Compensation Package
The Salary range for this position is $173,888.00 - $217,318.40 annually.
