Osmania University A Brief Profile

Osmania University is one of the premier institutions of higher learning in India epitomizingthe national agenda for higher education. A pioneering and performing university re-accreditedby NAAC with the highest rating of Grade A in the service of the Nation, making highereducation accessible, affordable and meaningful to lakhs of students from the backwardregion. This aptly sums up the spirit and essence of Osmania University the symbol of life longlearning.

Established in 1918, Osmania University is the 7th oldest university in the country, 3rdoldest in south India and the oldest in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Named after its founder NawabMir Osman Ali Khan, the 7th Nizam of the then princely state of Hyderabad, Osmania University isthe first university in the country to impart instruction through the medium of an Indian language i.e.,Urdu with English as a compulsory subject.

Over the years, Osmania University has transitioned from a traditional university and is traversingto become a pacesetter in the field of higher education with an international outlook and globalout reach.

Osmania University is a multi-faculty, multi-campus, comprehensive, semi-residential andthe largest affiliating university with nearly 1000 affiliated colleges under it. There are 11 facultiesand 52 academic departments. The University caters to the educational needs of nearly 4.5 lakhsstudents by offering 30 courses at the UG level (with 158 combinations) and more than 100 coursesat the PG level. M.Phil. and Doctoral programs are offered in almost all the subjects. Prof. G. RamReddy Centre for Distance Education has been offering a number of UG, PG and Professionalcourses numbering around 30 in different disciplines with an enrolment of nearly 65000 students.The university functions through a network of 8 campus colleges, 5 constituent colleges, 8 districtPG Colleges and a vast network of affiliated colleges spread over 6 districts of Telangana coveringa geographical area of 60000 sq. kms. with a population of over 20 millions.

The Research pursuits at the University are wide ranging, inter-disciplinary and of a highorder. The University Departments and Research centers have been performing exceedingly well inthis arena.

Osmania University has an impressive track record of international collaboration withleading institutions abroad. It has forged linkages with industry and R&D institutions.

Osmania University is one of the most sought after universities by international students,especially from the third world countries. It is a home away from home for nearly 2500 studentsincluding 300 girls from about 65 countries for academic pursuits in India.

Alumni of Osmania University have distinguished themselves at the national and internationallevels.

The University has embarked upon far reaching initiatives to promote scholarships andinnovation in higher education and to modernize the University governance.

51-A. Fundamental Duties - It shall be the duty of everycitizen of India

(a) To abide by the Constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National

Flag and the National Anthem;

(b) To cherish and follow the noble ideals which inspired our national struggle for

freedom;

(c) To uphold and protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India;

(d) To defend the country and render national service when called upon to do so;

(e) To promote harmony and the spirit of common brotherhood amongst all the people

of India transcending religious, linguistic and regional or sectional diversities, to

renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women;

(f) To value and preserve the rich heritage of our composite culture;

(g) To protect and improve the natural environment including forests, lakes, rivers

and wild life, and to have compassion for living creatures;

(h) To develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform;

(i) To safeguard public property and to abjure violence;

(j) To strive towards excellence in all spheres of individual and collective activity so

that the nation constantly rises to higher levels of endeavour and achievement;

(k) Who is parent or guardian to provide opportunities for education to his child or as

the case may be, ward between the age of six and fourteen years.
