Dealing with a Substance Abuser? What Experts SayDealing with an addicted family member can cause tremendous frustration and resentment. Often, conflict can arise among family members who differ on how to deal with the addict.

Our Licensed Professional Counselors are experienced in helping individuals and families struggling with addiction problems. Here is how a Counselor can help you:

Enable you to express your feelings. This can be the beginning to healthier coping.

Understand what the addicted member may be experiencing. This can lead to the right steps toward overcoming the problem.

Suggest ways to approach the family member. For example, you may want to tell the addicted family member that you’re worried about his or her drinking, and provide examples of how it has caused problems.

Explain available treatment options. These can include interventions and rehab clinics.

Real People, Real Stories

Relief for Financial StressThe stress of financial debt can lead to family tension and unhealthy coping behaviors. As one member, John, discovered, contacting a Work/Life Specialist

for resources can be a first important step toward becoming debt-free.

“The Specialist located credit counseling services to consolidate my debts and set up a repayment plan.” John also found articles on the website to help him establish a budget.

“The information really helped our family save money.”

Ask a Wellness CoachHow can I keep family mealtimes stress-free?Family dinners provide an important bonding experience. With busy schedules, these tips can help make them enjoyable and less rushed:

• Prep the night (or weekend) before. Get the kids involved in washing and storing veggies—it’s a good way to discuss the importance of nutrition.

• Make one night “cooking night.” Prepare big batches to freeze for leftovers.

• Keep fruit, cheese, whole grains and veggies on hand. A baguette, an ounce of cheese, grapes, and carrot sticks, makes a balanced meal when there’s no time for cooking.
