We love to work with home studios or small shops!

I want to finish a piece I started in tradi-tional oils with Genesis - is this possible?

You can coat your painting with a productcalled Magic Metallic Matte Sealer. Let thisair dry then paint over the sealer. If thesurface can take the heat, this sealer will actas a barrier between the oil and the Genesis.

My mop gets full of paint but I don’twant to clean it while painting as ittakes forever to dry - any tips?

I run my mop through the hand sanitizer($1 at the Dollar Tree--comparable to Purelland Dial). Takes out all the color and it isdry and ready almost instantly.

A tip from Linda McFadden:

Here is a tip the neurologist gave me. Donot sit for more than 30 minutes in oneposition, set a timer he says. Then get up,move around and stretch, neck, arms, legs.

I always seem to need to reduce or en-large a line drawing but am so bad atmath - what do you do?

We use a Proportion Wheel tool. The insidering is the size you have and the outsidering is the size you want. The little windowtells you the amount of the reduction neces-sary. Just set your copier to the size or tellthe print shop.

Seminar Philosophy and Content

Each seminar is patterned after the Old World Art Academies. The studentlearns the academic principles and techniques by duplicating the work of theTeacher/Master. The studies or projects are formulated to stress a particulararea of study and all teaching and painting is directed toward that end. Thestudent may work in traditional oils, acrylics, or Genesis heat set oils. Ann andMary teach using traditional oil methods with the Genesis paints.

The only prerequisite to study with Ann and Mary is a desire to increase yourknowledge and painting skills. While the Decorative Art Level TeachingSeminars are directed toward those wishing to learn how to teach or toimprove their teaching methods, it is also excellent for students who wish tolearn the Ann Kingslan Method from the very beginning. We are the onlystudio that can grant students the title of “Genesis Authorized Artisan”.Take any of our 3-5 day seminars and you will be an Authorized Artisan.

Lodging and Meals

Our students are housed at newly remodeled hotel, The Park Inn, which isdirectly across the parking lot from our decorative art studio. Our studentsreceive a highly discounted rate of $70 per night. The hotel has a complimen-tary breakfast while we provide a full lunch each day. The hotel has a fullservice restaurant and there are several restaurants and shops within walkingdistance for your evening meal.

How Do I Get to the Omaha Seminars?

The seminar studio and hotel is right off Interstate I-680. If you fly intoOmaha, there is a low cost shuttle between the hotel and airport. Omahaboasts excellent airfare rates due to the central location and airlines such asMidwest Express and Southwest. All airlines fly into Omaha.

Studio

Our professional studio is ideal for the seminar student. Each student has one-half of a 5 foot table. The lighting is excellent! Ann and Mary have 90 of theirdecorative art adorning every available surface. We have added a video monitorsystem to our studio. Now there truly is no bad seat. Kathy White I have always been a crafter, but about 11 years ago I wastalked into taking an acrylic class with a friend at Homespun keep-sakes was hooked! I began teaching at Homespun 5 years ago andfrom there went to Kingslan & Gibilisco Studio. I continue to take

classes when I can from 'big brushes' like MaryGibilisco, Debbie Cole, Mary Owens, KarenHubbard and Heidi England. There is alwaysmore to learn! I have dabbled in oils but acrylics remain myfirst love. I enjoy sharing ideas with all of mystudents and hope that I will someday be ableto do more with design My firm belief is that if

you could color between the lines in grade school you CAN learn to dodecorative painting; it is just a matter of practice, practice, practice. I have been lucky to have a great family that is supportive and allowme time to play in my paint room. I also have 4 wonderful grandchildren

who love to play in Grandma's paint room and are a true inspirationbecause they have no fear of color.

Patty Vinal I'm a born and bred Omaha, Nebraskan and love living inthis very friendly City. I've been married to my very supportive hus-band Mike for 33 years this year and raised our 3 boys and adopted 4girls. Needing an outlet, I found a shop nearby that taught "Tole". Knowing I could never afford to buy the artwork I wanted I signedup for classes. I've been painting since January of 1989, that makes itan official 16 years! I've taught at several shops in Omaha and Colo-rado as well as my Home Studio for a year before moving back toOmaha. I was fortunate enough to take classes at "The Tole Hut" inDenver for a number of years where I learned Rosemaling and StrokeRoses in Oils. Since moving back I've come to love Genesis paintsstarting with Shirley Hutchingson's beginning classes. Now I love

taking from Mary and Ann as oftenas possible. I still love painting in Acrylics aswell. Strokework in any form is myfavorite thing to do. Just about ev-erything can be improved when us-ing strokes, even basecoating. I alsobelieve you can achieve a high levelof accomplishment when using themodern mediums now available. Ihope I can give as much as I have

been given with skill and patience, and am looking forward to teachingagain.

Your Free Lesson: How to Paint a Red Rose

PreparationThe masonite insert panel background is applied with a finefoam roller brush with acrylic DecoArt Russett. Apply threecoats of the acrylic then sand lightly with a paper bag.

Red RoseTo create a vibrant red rose the value scale must progressthrough the colour wheel. As colours on a value scale becomelighter the colour or value must become warmer and brighteras compared to the value below it. As a colour becomes darkeron a value scale, the colour becomes duller and cooler ascompared to the value above it. Therefore, the values mustprogress from the medium value of red to red orange, orange, yellow orange in the light values. Then the scale follows thecolour wheel in the opposite direction. The scale creates thedark from red violet to violet and finally to blue violet

Using the value scale in this manner allows the rose to staydark red and not become chalky (bleached out in appearance)or muddy (brownish and dull) in the dark areas. If white wereadded in the light areas, the rose would go “pinkish” and dull.If black or brown were added to the dark areas, the rose wouldappear as if it were dying.

It is difficult to maintain the clarity of colour when workingwith a red scale. When the dark values touch the light values, the colour neutralizes as it is blended. Therefore, it is impera-tive that the values are applied and blended one at a time andin sequence. In other words, do not place all of the values andblend. The same sequence must be respected when layeringaccents tints and adjustments.

Morning Glory , Filler Flowers and Wild RosesCreate the morning glory and wild roses using the same valuescale as the red rose. In order to make these flowers recedeaway from the center of interest rose, neutralize each of thered values with a small amount of green (complement of red)in each of the values. Use the lower values of the scale tomake the flowers recede even more.

LeavesLeaves are the support system for the flowers in life as well asin painting. Leaves must never be more vibrant nor moreinteresting than the flowers. However, leaves should be variedfrom each other in hue, tone, and value.

Artistic license may be taken when coloring leaves as well asdesigning leaves. Emphasis is given to flowers through con-trast in the leaves. Place cool tones close to warm tones; placelight values close to dark values. Recede leaves and minimizeemphasis by parallel placement; i.e., cool next to cool, warmnext to warm, dark next to dark. etc.

Use these mixtures in combination. No leaf should be entirelycool; add some warm tones. No leaf should be entirely warm;add some cool tones. Advancing and important leaves will bemore vibrant and will show a wider contrast range of values.Receding leaves will be duller and show a closer contrast rangeof values.

Temperature can create contrast. Use warm against warm, and cool against cool in order to recede into the backgroundor connect with the neighboring flower. Use warm against coolin order to pull forward, emphasize or contrast with theneighboring flower, area, or background. The veins, spots, holes, and interesting details may be added after the leaf is dry.

Basic or Natural Leaf ScaleMix a value scale of grey using black and white. The scaleshould range from a value 2 to a value 8 (see chart on page28).Another option is to use the Genesis Value Scale of Grey.If you mix your own, there should be at least 7 different values. Now add a small amount of Y to each portion to shift the scaleto the green side. The lower values should be quieter (dullerin intensity) than the lighter portions.

Split the value scale into four equal portions. There shouldnow be 28 portions of paint.

Warm Leaf ScaleTo one of the value scales of green, create a warm leaf valuescale by adding YO to the lighter values and BU to the darkervalues. The addition of BU will dull the dark values if theybecome too bright. If any of the values become too grey, addY to the pile.

Cool Leaf ScaleTo the third value scale of green, create a cool leaf value scaleby adding UB to each pile. If any of the values become toointense with the blue, neutralize with BU.

Red or Dull Leaf ScaleTo the final value scale, create rich browns by adding YO tothe lighter values and RV + BU to the darker values. Add R ifany the mixes become too intense or bright Add Y if any of themixes become too dull.

Finishing of the CabinetFinish the cabinet by painting the entire cabinet with DecoArtRussett. Antique the cabinet with a mix of RV + Blk. Thin thepaint with the Thinning Medium respecting the 40%-60% ratio(review page 4).

Add side and center veins with dark green. Add highlight inthe center of the veins wherethey cross over the light area ofthe leaf.
