SERMON SYNOPSISSERMON SYNOPSISSERMON SYNOPSISSERMON SYNOPSIS
• God opposes us when we are proud, but gives grace when we are humble [James 4:6]. The Bible
also says that God “detests” those with a proud heart, and such people will “not go unpunished
[Proverbs 16:5].
• Compared to other aspects of our sinful nature, pride is treated most harshly by God because a
proud person is full of himself, and there is no place for God in his life. God is unable to use and
transform people who are full of themselves.
• God loves us and wants us to be transformed to be like Christ. When we allow Him to use us, we
will be exalted at the proper time and rewarded with riches, honour and life [1 Peter 5:6, Proverbs
22:4].
• God has called us to demonstrate our humility by placing the interests of others above ours. By
doing so, we would have the same mindset as Christ, who humbled himself and died on the cross
for us [Philippians 2:4-8]. Jesus has every reason to be proud as He is sinless, blameless and holy,
yet He considered our interests above His. We are called to grow in humility in the same way and
we will receive favour and grace from doing so.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONSDISCUSSION QUESTIONSDISCUSSION QUESTIONSDISCUSSION QUESTIONS
1. Have you ever had to give up something you felt you deserved for the sake of someone else? Was
it easy/ difficult and why?
[Children's Activity: Give each child a balloon and ask them to blow it as big as they can. Keep
asking them to blow it bigger until it pops. Alternatively have an adult to demonstrate and blow the
balloon till it pops. You can ask – “what does this balloon contain? It’s full of my air. What happens
if I continue to blow the balloon?” Continue to blow until it bursts. Explain that some people are like
the balloon, they are full of themselves. What this means is that just as the balloon is full of air,
these people are puffed up and full of pride of themselves and there is no space for God in their
lives. But as the balloon gets puffed up, it will eventually burst and is destroyed. Likewise, the Bible
warns in Proverbs 16:18 (NIRV) “If you are proud, you will be destroyed. If you are proud, you will
fall.” So we should be humble. Ask the children what are specific ways they can practice humility
(eg, place the interests of others above ourselves).]

2. Humility is often wrongly associated with self-deprecation, thinking less of oneself, passiveness,
putting down one’s strengths or even self-worth. But according to the Bible, what is the right view
and behavior of humility, and how is such humility rewarded?
[Verses to help us go deeper: Romans 12:3; Philippians 2:2-11; Matthew 5:5]
3. What are some signs of pride we should watch out for? Are there any areas of pride in your life
that you need to surrender to God? Share with the group so you can pray for one another.
[Verses to help us go deeper: Romans 10:3; 1 John 1:8; Jude 1:16]
PRAYER POINTERSPRAYER POINTERSPRAYER POINTERSPRAYER POINTERS
• Thank God for sending His son who humbled Himself to die on the cross for our sins.
• Pray that we will resist the temptation to boast about ourselves and for the Holy Spirit to enable us
to remain humble in spirit.
• Pray that we will find ways to serve other people and demonstrate true humility by placing others’
interests above ours.
