Karin’s CornerHi everyone,Our year 7 students will be beginning to feel both nervous and excited about their approaching transition to High School. This will be their last term of Primary school and you will more than likely notice a bit of nervousness, anxiety and a sadness leaving a comfortable, nurturing environment. I know as an adult, change is a scary thing, let alone for a teenager. If you notice your child feeling anxious or worried, try these tips:

• Be patient and listen to your child’s fears and concerns, and take them seriously. It’s not just a matter of telling them to ‘calm down’- it’s not that easy.

• Positive thoughts lessen fear or worry. Replace “I can’t do this” with “I will do the best I can.”

• Make sure they attend their transition visits, this is the time to become familiar with their surroundings and form new friendships.

• If beginning to feel anxious, practice some deep breathing.

• Keep talking about their feelings. Encourage your child to talk with you, or someone you or your child trusts.

• Talk about the positives of starting high school. New opportunities/subjects/ friendships.

• Put their concerns on a scale of 1 -10. Ten is the worst possible thing that could happen. It helps to see that their worry may not be as serious as they first thought.

• Visit the school grounds to familiarise themselves with their new surroundings.

• If they need to take public transport to and from school, plan to travel the route a few times together for added confidence.

• Be prepared to seek help or support for your child if they are struggling.

• Have them speak to family or friends who have recently begun high School, and talk over any fears or concerns they may have.

• Above all, lots and lots of love and hugs!

All the bestKarin Williams (PCW)

Room 7: Sharing learning with

our Philippine buddies

During 2018, we have been sharing our learning with

A. Mabini Elementary, our Philippine sister school.

Classes in both schools have enjoyed seeing pictures of the different activities and celebrations involving our buddy students. We have

learnt that we have a lot in common!

Top right: A. Mabini students celebrating their school

Foundation Day.

Right: Room 7 talking about Harmony Day.

During term 2, Room 7 students began a design and technology unit with a challenge to build a structure that would hold a book above a table. We only had 20 minutes and limited marshmallows and tooth picks. Our Philippine buddies had a go too! We noticed that they drew a plan of

their designs, which we learnt is part of the design process.

Providing a quality lifestyle

Parking Around Schools – No Stopping versus No Parking

No Stopping Drivers must NOT STOP during indicated times for any reason in an area marked No Stopping, No Standing, as a Bike Lane or a Bus Zone or anywhere marked with a solid yellow line.

No Parking Some schools have drop off and pick up (kiss n drop, kiss and ride, pick up/drop off) zones.

These are No Parking Zones during certain times that can be used for immediate drop off and pick up of passengers if these conditions are adhered to:

• The driver must always remain within 3 metres of the vehicle

• Drivers are only permitted to stop for 2 minutes to drop and pick up passengers

• No Parking is only for the times indicated and outside of that time it is unrestricted parking unless otherwise indicated

• In the afternoons, arrive after the bell has gone and allow time for your child to reach the No Parking Zone. If your child is not waiting to be collected DO NOT STOP, instead continue to circulate around and approach the No Parking Zone again.

• If you need to walk your child into school then you must park elsewhere.

“No Parking” Zones provide a safe place for children to be dropped off and picked up and allow for high turnover of vehicles. It works, if everyone follows the rules and does the right thing.
