What is NQA-1?

ASME NQA-1 (Nuclear Quality Assurance-1) is a regulatory standard created

and maintained by ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers).

The ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) Certification Program providescentralized, independent, third-party certification for quality assurance programs inconformance with the ASME NQA-1 standard, "Quality Assurance Requirements forNuclear Facility Applications". It entails a full audit of the Quality Assurance Programperformed by trained ASME auditors with an extensive background in quality assurance.A successful audit will yield a NQA-1 Quality Program Certificate.

The ASME NQA-1 Certification Program seeks to meet the needs of the nuclear industryby expanding the supply chain with organizations who are committed to understandingquality and providing high quality products and services.

NQA-1 Process

Calibration: Performed yearly by the “contractor” conducting

the testing. Most test equipment has a 1-year cycle (some have

2-year cycles) involved in the testing program. However,

calibration may also have to be verified at a field site just

before the field testing begins and immediately after the field

testing is completed.

External Calibration: Laboratories that have NIST traceable

calibrations are generally used to calibrate “local standards”

that are, in turn, used to calibrate all other equipment at the

project facility. The “local standards” are then quarantined

during the year-long testing cycle.

Internal Calibration: Performed by the “contractor”3
