What can keep us from the presence of God? Jesus’ dramatic cleansing of the temple was seen by his disciples as a prophetic sign of God’s action. The temple was understood as the dwelling place of God among his people. When God delivered his people from slavery in Egypt, he brought them through the sea, and finally to Mount Sinai where he made a covenant with them and gave them a new way of life embodied in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17). Jesus’ cleansing of the temple is also a prophetic sign of what he wants to do with each of us. He ever seeks to cleanse us of sin and make us living temples of his Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). Do you want to be holy as God is holy?

THE PASTOR’S LETTER Father John Gabriel
SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE CHURCH BULLETIN 638 :: NOVEMBER 9, 2014 PAGE 3
Dear Parish Family,
Well, I think we pilgrims are finally beginning to get over our jet lag, and beginning to process in our minds and hearts all of the graces we experienced in Spain and Portugal. Speaking personally, to celebrate Holy Mass for all of our parish intentions in the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago de Compostela was a blessing I will never forget. To be so close to the earthly remains of our patron St. James the Greater was a tremendous feeling, I truly felt his presence with me, and asked him to pray that this parish family who bears his name in Springfield, NJ will truly live with his spirit, a spirit of courage and faith. I had the opportunity in 1998 to visit the Shrine of Fatima, Portugal (where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in 1917) and again I found it to be a holy place of peace. What was different for me this time was that we had the chance to visit the actual homes of Blessed Jacinta and Blessed Francisco Marto and their cousin Lucia dos Santos (the shepherd children). And we were also able to walk in the fields among the olive trees, experiencing Fatima as the children did when Mary came to them. We were able to pray near a statue of the angel of Peace who gave them Holy Communion in the field the year before the apparition (heaven was truly preparing them for their visitation). This was one of the most powerful places for me, away from the busy-ness of the shrine itself I experienced these simple children as flesh and blood people who fell in love with God and our Blessed Mother, and, in intimate communion with them, brought a message of hope to the world. Another highlight of the trip was celebrating Holy Mass on the last day of our pilgrimage in a Church in Lisbon built over the house where St. Anthony of Padua was born (that’s right, St. Anthony was not Italian, he was Portuguese). Many of our parishioners, school children and reli-gious education children, wrote in books your needs and intentions, and we pilgrims prayed for you every day. But after Mass on the last day of our pilgrimage, the sacristan of this Church asked me if the books I was carrying with me were our prayer intentions. When I answered in the affirmative, he motioned for me to follow him. He took me down into the crypt and unlocked the gate to the actual room of St. Anthony’s birth and allowed me to leave our prayer intentions in that room. It was a beautiful moment, and one when I felt especially close to our parish family of St. James. I want to share with you one personal story: a priest friend of mine is very seriously ill with liver cancer, and he was very much in my own prayers on our pilgrimage. A friend of his was praying with him one day and she told him that she was praying for him to St. Gabriel the Archangel, but during her prayers she was distracted because she kept hearing the name “James” in her mind. He was shocked when she said this because, as he told her, at that very moment Fr. John Gabriel (me) was celebrating Holy Mass for him over the tomb of St. James. When he returned to his bedroom after she left, he found a text from me telling him that I had just finished celebrating this Mass. The next day, he received a totally unexpected and positive report from his doctor. Was this all a coinci-dence? Or does God really hear our prayers and respond? I guess we all have to decide that for ourselves. For me, I am continually amazed at the love of our good God. On our own pilgrimage through life He is always there: leading, guiding, loving. May we allow Him to give us all He wants us to receive. And remember, one doesn’t need to travel to far away countries to experience His grace. It is in the present here and now, there for the asking, there for the taking!
In His love,
~ Fr. John

Dear Saint James Parish Families, As we approach the first anniversary of Monsignor William Hatcher’s passing, I have a dream and plan of dedicating and renaming the Upper Auditorium to Mon-signor William Hatcher Hall. Many memories were created by Monsignor Bill as he attended all of the school and parish functions held in the auditorium. His laughter resonates in many of us today.
Our goal is to raise money to obtain a plaque to recognize the dedication of the Hall. In time, as money is donated, I am looking to paint, install new flooring and update the facilities in the front of the auditorium. A memorial board with the donor’s name will also be placed in the auditorium. Please send donations to the par-ish or school office marked “Monsignor Hatcher Hall”. Check should be made payable to “Saint James” and mark the memo: Hatcher Hall.
Tax receipts will be provided upon request.
Thank you for your thoughtful generosity, Father John Gabriel & Parish Staff

HUMAN LIFE AND DIGNITY
“A man, even if seriously sick or prevented in the exercise of its higher functions, is and will be always a man ... [he] will never become a 'vegetable' or an ‘animal’. The intrinsic value and personal dignity of every human being does not change depending on their circumstances.“ ... Pope John Paul II, 2004
To live in a manner worthy of our human dignity, and to spend our final days on this earth in peace and comfort, surrounded by loved ones—that is the hope of each of us. In particular, Christians hope sees these final days as a time to prepare for our eternal life with Christ. The life and dignity of every person must be respected and protected at every stage and in every condition even when our loved ones suffer from debilitating or terminal illnesses. The U.S. Bishops’ policy statement To Life Each Day with Dignity, addresses the Catholic position on assisted suicide and how, as followers of Christ, we take care of the needs of the seriously ill. To read the document go to http://ww.usccb.org; scroll down to Pro Life Issues and then select Euthanasia from the list on the left.

Mondays are hard. It’s not easy gearing up to start the week all over again, especially when the weekend has been more hectic than restful and we haven’t had an opportunity to step away from the routine for a break. Sometimes, we have to recharge in place. A great way to do just that is to attend Ladies Night Out, this Monday, November 10th from 7-9pm in the school. Join us for a relaxing evening with friends – those from school, parish, and maybe some of your besties that have never been here before – all are welcome! This event is a bonus for the busy multi-tasker, since there will be shopping with a variety of popular vendors, including some of our local businesses. Catching up, slowing down, finding Christmas gifts for that elusive person on your list: not too bad for a Monday night! We are looking forward to welcoming you to our First Annual Ladies Night Out. This Tuesday, November 11th, Veteran’s Day, Saint James students will participate in Springfield Township’s annual remembrance ceremony in Veteran’s Park. Please join us. PreK4 students are also creating pictures and cards for local soldiers in honor of their service to our country. Congratulations to our new alumni who receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this Saturday! The support received at Saint James School and the Parish Sacramental Program have led them to this moment as they celebrate with their peers at two Confirmation Masses, at 10 am and 1:30 pm. We welcome Coadjutor Archbishop Hebda and Retired Auxiliary Bishop Dominic Marconi. Congratulations all!
