THE PARISH OFFICEAdministrator:Mrs Lynne Yuille 020 8393 2643 (Office)Office email: [email protected]

St Mary’s Church is in London Road, Ewell, and the Parish Office is onthe south side of the church.

The Office hours are normally 9.30-12.00 Mon, Tues, Wed and Fri, butplease check before visiting as appointments are usually needed.

The postal address is:St Mary’s Ewell Parish Church, London Rd, Ewell, Surrey, KT17 2AY.

We are probably more aware than ever of the diversity ofpolitical opinion in society. Divisions over Brexit and otherrecent referendums have been added to the usual partyaffiliations, and social media means than many people aremore vociferous in expressing opinions than ever. Probablymost of us have some political beliefs we hold strongly, some things we strongly oppose, and then a whole range ofissues we aren't sure about or can see arguments of bothsides. I think that sharing opinions and learning about oth-ers' points of view is a good and constructive thing to do (ifdone in a constructive way, at least!) And I don't thinkanyone argues that the diversity of political opinion demon-strates that all politics must therefore be pointless and false.

But I do sometimes hear that argument about religiousbelief. In other words, people sometimes say "there are somany different religions, therefore none of them can betrue." I don't see that that follows. Rather, as with politics, the diversity and energy of peoples' varied beliefs show thatthe matters at hand are important and worth reflecting on."If I were going to be religious, how would I know whichreligion to choose?" is another question I have heard. But I'dsuggest it is rather unusual for someone to take that path. You might decide you want to follow football and then picka football team. But relatively few people decide to bereligious, and then seek out a religion. Christians tell manydifferent stories of coming to faith, but they don't tend tobegin, "I decided I wanted to be religious". Stories of faithmight involve growing up in the life of the church. Or theremight be an encounter that begins with a Christian friend, with reading Scripture or some other Christian text. A storymight begin with a Christian community, a church, comingto feel that one belongs and gradually finding faith has takenroot within one's heart. Christians are those who followJesus as "the Way, the Truth, and the Life." We commitourselves to this Way, but that doesn't mean we deny we canever learn or benefit from other ways and other traditions.

So instead, I think it's a better analogy to liken Christianfaith to a marriage. In the vows at a wedding, the two peoplegetting married promise to love each other "forsaking allothers." We choose, because we feel this is the right path forus; we often feel we have "fallen in love," that is, we aremaking a free choice to marry but we are marrying becauseCupid's arrow struck and that was outside our consciouscontrol. It was love that brought us to the moment of thewedding. We did not examine all of the possible millions (orbillions) of candidates across the globe whom we mighthave married, assessed each one rigorously, and come to asettled and logical decision. We were caught up by love, andwe are happy- ecstatic- to be able to make those vows andforsake all others. This, I think, is true of many who getmarried, and it is true of many Christians. We do not followChrist because we have had the chance to asses every otherphilosophical worldview and religious system and foundthem wanting. Rather, we have encountered the love of Godin Christ and decided, this is love, and I am going to

respond. This is the Way, and I will follow the Way, because I am ecstatic about the chanceto do so. In Jesus Christ, we believe, we will find our life's fulfilment, creation's purpose, grace poured out upon grace, and true love in abundance.

IN CHURCH IN AUGUSTAugust is a quiet month in church. There are no regular weekday services, and most of

our weekly activities have taken a holiday break. There are just two Sunday services eachweek, a simple said service of Holy Communion at 8am, and then the 9:30am SungEucharist. The parish choir is on holiday but we sing hymns and simple congregationalmusic, and for some of the weeks during August St Mary's Singers will be leading thesinging for us. Children's hour is on its summer break, but children are of course alwayswelcome at St Mary's, and we do have our welcome area which younger children mayappreciate during longer parts of the service.

Our bereavement café does take place this month, on Tuesday 21 August this month, inthe parish room at the back of the church because of the redecoration of the hall. Runningfrom 2.45-3.45, this is open to anyone who would like to chat about experiences aroundbereavement in a relaxed, cafe-like atmosphere.

Sunday 26 August is the dedication festival of St Mary's, in other words the Sundaynearest the anniversary of the church's consecration which took place when it was built in1848. We return to a 'full' 9.30 service- with the parish choir and full serving team- for thisspecial festival, as we give thanks for the beautiful and sacred building in which we areprivileged to worship God.

A CAST OF THOUSANDSTrailers for old epic films like the 1956 Ten Commandments used to boast of "A cast of

thousands". In July, there was a cast of thousands who together made the Ewell VillageFair. First of all, I'd like to thank all those who gave their time in the committee or as avolunteer:- only because so many people give so generously of time is the Fair possible. And what a success it was! A beautiful day, with a wonderful atmosphere, the wholecommunity coming together throughout the village and especially in the grounds which wewere again grateful to use thanks to Ewell Castle School. It was great to welcome thevisiting Morris sides, and the many other acts and stalls and representatives of local groupsand charities. But I am being quite literal-minded when I call it a cast of thousands, becauseit would not be the Fair without the fair-goers, the thousands who come through the gate, have a great day out, and enable us to raise money for St Mary's church. Takings on theday were in excess of £11,400 (including contactless payments at the beer tent for the firsttime), which is a great total and testimony to the hard work and generosity of so many. Thefinal total (factoring in other income and expenditure) will be published in due course. Themoney raised at the Fair is a significant part of our annual income that helps the mainte-nance of the church and churchyard and all that we do in the community.

HALL REDECORATIONThe church hall is being redecorated for most of this month, so activities that usually

take place there are either moved or cancelled. Whereas usually our Wednesday coffeemorning continues through August, because of the redecoration this year it is 'on holiday'until after the August Bank Holiday.

SUMMER SUNDAY COFFEEFor most of August, coffee following our Sunday 9.30am Eucharist will be in church. I

hope this might be an opportunity that allows some of those who aren't

usually able to get to coffee on a Sunday to stay for a fewminutes after the services for a drink and a chat. With theslightly simpler August services we finish a few minutesearlier so everyone should have time for a quick cuppa.During the period Sunday coffee is in church there willbe no charge and no donations bowl- everyone shouldfeel very welcome and able to stay regardless of whetherthey have any change on them! We hope to return to thechurch hall for Sunday coffee on 26 August, St Mary'sdedication festival, after the 9.30am service, when theVicar will officially 're-open' the hall.

LOOKING AHEAD: 2 SEPTEMBEROn 2 September, our parish choir are singing services

at Chichester Cathedral. All supporters from Ewell aremost welcome to join us there at the Cathedral. Chiches-ter is a great place for a day out, and is a wonderfulcathedral to visit. The choir is singing 10am ChoralMattins, 11am Sung Eucharist, 3.30pm Choral Even-song.

Meanwhile, back at home on Sunday 2 September, ourusual 8am and 9.30am services will be followed by aspecial Praise@11 all-age service of Book Bag Blessing. This is a service to mark the beginning of the newacademic year and school term: everyone is invited tobring their school bag, book bag, or other bag (rucksack, handbag, work bag) to be blessed at a time of newbeginnings. It starts at 11am and all are most welcome.Your friend and Parish Priest

IN AND AROUND OURPARISH

Hello again - wow, what a weekend! I cannot be-lieve that our annual Ewell Village Fair is finished. Wewere so lucky to have had such beautiful weather tocomplement our fantastic fair.

August is a slightly quieter month in and around theParish, as the schools have broken up on holiday; so alot of the families are on summer holidays and manylocal activities have come to an end.

For those of you who will be staying locally for theSummer holidays - last year, we loved going for walksalong the Hogsmill (especially the stepping stones, ona sunny day), the museum and Bourne Hall, feedingthe ducks and squirrels, Horton Park, Epsom Com-mon, Nonsuch Park (we could get lost in the woodsand park for hours), Ewell Court and Rosebery Park.We were amazed at how many exciting things therewere around Ewell.

The history walks are continuing over the summer -including walks around South Street and DorkingRoad, The Horton Hospitals, Epsom Downs, Ewelland there is a walk to discover Epsom's oldest road. For more information contact David Brooks at theBourne Hall Museum.

Hope that you have a wonderful August and I willbe in touch again in September.

Dear Father,Let us desire for others all that we desire forourselvesLet us judge others the way we judge ourselvesLet us look for what will help everybodyNot just that which will help ourselvesLet us let everything else go byAnd lend our ears and eyesTo helping you look over mankindLet us remember that more things are wroughtby prayer than this world dreams ofLet us deny ourselves and take up our crosses andfollow you.

Ere thou sleepest, gently layEvery troubled thought away.Put off worry and distressAs thou puttest off thy dress.Drop thy worry and thy careIn the quiet arms of prayerLord, thou knowest how I live; All I've done amiss, forgive; All the good I've tried to doHallow, bless and carry through. All I love in safety keepWhile, in Thee I fall asleep.

O God, the giver of all good gifts, I thank thee for allthe many blessings such as friendship, home life, health. Give me a contented mind, a cheerful heart, asteady will, that I may spend and be spent in theservice of others, after the examples of Him who gaveHis life a ransom for many, our Lord and Master,Jesus Christ.

Whenever we are called to serve you, Lord,Whenever fires rage, or folk are trapped,Give us strength to save a life, whoever it may be.Help us to rescue a little child before it is too late,Or to save an older person too frail to escape.Enable us to be present and hear the weakest cryOr quickly and efficiently put fires out.We want to fill our calling, Lord,To serve our neighbours in their need.If one of us should fall or lose our life,Then bless with your all-embracing loveThose who are dearest to us.We ask all this trusting in Jesus Christ. SUE’S ANNIVERSARY

It was a great joy for our church to mark the Revd SueAyling’s 20th anniversary of ordination on 8 July this year.We welcomed many of Sue’s friends and parishioners fromher former churches to our 9.30 Eucharist, at which Sue wasthe celebrant. The choir sang some of Sue’s favourite piecesof choral music including Stainer’s “God so loved the world”and Fauré’s “Cantique de Jean Racine”. The Vicar’s sermondrew a parallel between the role of a Priest at the Eucharistand the role of the poet writing a sonnet, and gave thanks forthe way that Sue’s ministry helps us all find God in our lives.

After the service Sue invited everyone to the Church Hallfor refreshments.

The sun shone brightly on this year’s EwellVillage Fair, held on 14 July. There were 1436adults through the gates plus their children (whohad free admission). At the time of writing, theincome on the day of the fair was in excess of avery healthy £11,400.

Very many thanks to all who attended, all whohelped on the day and those who worked so hardbefore and afterwards to set up and dismantle thestalls, sideshows and arenas on a very hot day.

Finally a special thanks to the fair committeewho planned it all in advance and made sure that itall came together on the day. Could you help byjoining the committee that will be planning EVF2019?

HOPE

HOPE is the annual free, family event put on byChurches Together in Ewell in the grounds of BourneHall. This year, St Mary’s again contributed a stall withgarden games: giant Jenga, giant Connect 4, and Mölkky.Things started slowly as 24 June was the date of anEngland World Cup game. Once the football had finishedhowever, lots and lots of people started to arrive. All ofour games were in constant use, with queues… we’ll haveto bring more next year!

Sarah Holmes, Matthew Burgess, Simon Gregory andJonathan Holmes are all familiar faces at St. Mary’s.They presented a programme of music by Brahms,Humperdinck, Tchaikovsky and Gershwin among othersand included some duets for piano and organ.

We had to wait for piano and organ however. First off, appropriately, an overture. Now when I was sitting myGCE A-Level in Music Iused to spend many hoursporing over maps of Germa-ny looking for Breslau. For itwas the University of thiscity which, in 1880, awardedthe German composer Johan-nes Brahms an honorary doc-torate in Philosophy. Brahmshad always been acutely con-scious of his lack of educa-tion, especially when hisfriends had all spent time at a university (although notnecessarily studying music: Schumann started out as alawyer). It therefore came as a surprise for Brahms toreceive news of his honorary – without sitting an exami-nation – degree. As a gesture of thanks he composed theAcademic Festival Overture, and for this we heard themagnificent sound of 8 hands on 2 grand pianos.

Two hands on one piano came next, in George Gersh-win’s “Rhapsody in Blue” (1924). This work establishedthe composer’s reputation.

Alexandre Luigini is largely forgotten as a composerapart from one work, the Ballet Egyptien (1875). Themusic for this may be familiar to some from the music-hall act of Wilson, Keppel and Betty as well as, totelevision viewers, in the Two Ronnies.

Now for the long-awaited piano and organ duet. Fer-encz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 sounded won-derfully sonorous. Liszt was born in Hungary although

spent most of his life abroad; in this piece he makes useof characteristic Hungarian motifs: a ‘verbunkos’ theme(dark-sounding, dotted rhythms) to start with, leadinginto what is called a ‘csárdás’, a dance comprising analternation of slow and fast music.

Not Liszt but Tchaikovsky brought us to the interval.Eight hands on two pianos played an arrangement made

by the composer himself ofthe Serenade for Strings(1880). Splendid piece inwhich the introductory an-dante theme is repeated atthe close thus rounding offthe work neatly.

The original EngelbertHumperdinck was a Ger-man conductor and compos-er who is best knownnowadays for his fairy-tale

opera Hänsel und Gretel the Overture to which weheard arranged for two pianos. A more modern compos-er is the Canadian Denis Bédard, born in 1950 andwhose music is sometimes heard at church. In DuetSuite we heard piano and organ again in music of ahighly approachable style. There are five short move-ments. Next we heard Gershwin again, the Porgy andBess Fantasy by Percy Grainger, an arrangement for 4hands on 2 pianos of music from the opera. Lastly, twoshort contrasting pieces: the Tritsch-Tratsch Polka(1858) by Johann Strauss the Second, and, lastly, JackFina’s Bumble Boogie based on ‘Flight of the Bumble-bee’.

Finally, readers may like to know that my youthfulsearches for Breslau were rewarded when it turned outthat is the German name for the Polish city of Wroclaw.
