Good Friday, March 25, 6:30 PM Worship - “The Man on the Cross”

Easter Sunday March 27, 2016

Sunrise Service at Cordelia, 6 AM Easter Worship at Emmanuel, 9:30 AM

February 10 is Ash Wednesday.

Do you know the symbolism of the day?

From ancient times, ashes have been used as a symbol of mourning, penitence, grief and

humiliation. In his pain and sorrow, Job 'sat among the ashes' (Job 2:8). The Old Testament book of

Numbers and the New Testament book of Hebrews indicate that ashes were also used for purification

(see Numbers 19:17 and Hebrews 9:13).

Christians have had an old tradition of using ashes made from the palm branches used

on the last Palm Sunday. Priests and ministers have often used the ashes to make the sign of

the cross on a believer's forehead as part of the Ash Wednesday ceremony.

The ashes symbolize the Christian's intent to repent of sins, to accept purification from the Lord, and to make a public witness of one's faith in Christ

as Lord and Savior.

Since Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent, the ashes symbolize one's intention to deepen his or

her spiritual life. Lent is a time for spiritual renewal and growth in dedication and service.

Sunday’s Scripture Segments

Scripture readings for this Sunday,

February 7, 2016, Transfiguration of Our Lord, are:

Exodus 34:29-35 Moses’ face shone with the reflected glory of God after he received the ten commandments on Mount Sinai. The

sight caused the Israelites to be afraid, so Moses wore a veil to mask the radiance of God’s glory, taking it off when he spoke directly with God.

2 Corinthians 3:12--4:2

In his debates with the Corinthians, Paul contrasts the glory of Moses

with the glory of Christ. The Israelites could not see Moses’ face because of the veil. But in Christ we see the

unveiled glory of God and are transformed into Christ’s likeness.

Luke 9:28-43a

The conversation about Jesus’ suffering and death is enclosed in a

dazzling foreshadowing of the resurrection. God affirms Jesus’

identity, the disciples are stunned speechless, and Jesus resumes his mission with a demonstration of his

power over evil.

Sermon Title: “Moses Face”

Pastor Dave Daugs

Following the Children’s Sermon, J.A.M. leaders will escort the kiddos down to the Fellowship Hall for crafts, games, songs, and a snack. Children will return to the Sanctuary just prior to Holy Communion.

Prayer Pieces Book Study Sunday mornings at 8:30 in “The Gallery.” We will be reading several of the stories from The Book of God by Walter Wangerin, Jr. during Advent and into the New Year. This is the Bible as you have never read it before -

told with passion and depth. We are beginning with the story of Mary. Please come join us whether you "knit or not." It is available through

Amazon - paperback for $15.70 or on Kindle for $5.99. Contact Carol Nelson with questions at [email protected].

What would

YOU like to do?

Here’s an idea! Make a positive impact on the Sunday experience of all who enter here!

Did you know? EVERYONE can serve!

Look for opportunities to serve; don’t wait to be asked! Remember: You can serve without being a part of an “official” ministry.

We all can: extend the word of welcome, whether or not we

are official greeters; be listening, caring friends, whether or not we are

official lay counselors; be ready to give reason for the hope that is in us,

whether or not we are on the evangelism team; be enthusiastic participants and ready to give a

hand, whether or not we are on the planning or cleanup committees;

OR… you can sign up!

Asked to be placed on the monthly Servant Schedule! Try something new!

Contact the office and say you want to be on the schedule to serve as a Greeter! Assisting Minister! Usher! Communion Assistant! Acolyte!

Reader! Bring Altar Flowers! Be a Counter! Help with J.A.M.! Let us know!

What would YOU like to do? ______________________

There are many ways to be involved

in the ministries at Emmanuel. Just let us know what you hold interest in,

what your gifts are, what you like to do! Your help is always needed and appreciated!
