Sunday’s Scripture Segments

Scripture readings for this Sunday, July 26, The Ninth Sunday a er Pentecost, are:

2 Kings 4:42–44 Today's reading is part of a larger sec on of 2 Kings that describes the miracles of

Elisha, the successor to Elijah. Here the prophet gives food to a hungry crowd. Though there is not enough food to go around, Elisha trusts God, who provides

enough and even more to sa sfy the need.

Ephesians 3:14–21 We have been rooted and grounded in the love of Christ, which surpasses all human

knowledge. Because Christ dwells in our hearts, our lives are con nuously strengthened and empowered by the ongoing presence of the Spirit.

John 6:1–21 In John's gospel, the miracles of Jesus are called "signs," because they reveal the true

character of God. As such, they remain within the mystery of God and cannot be brought under human control.

Sermon Title:

“The Hand of the Lord Was Upon Me.”

Pastor Dave Daugs

June 2015 Financial Report

Income and expenses this year need to average about $27,100 per month to meet budget. Income for the general fund in June totaled $19,536 and expenses were $28,512. As a result, the opera ng loss for June totaled $8,975 and general fund deficit year to date has increased from $6,616 to $15,591. While this is a disappoin ng result, we know from recent history that a down month in the summer is not a surprise. We are quick to recall the benevolence of you, the members of Emmanuel, and the rich blessings of our gracious God. As we reach the halfway point in the budget year, we note that actual giving (not including Verizon & Good Shepherd) totals $131,365 compared to the budgeted amount of $145,181. If our giving was at the budgeted level, that would wipe out almost the en re deficit. Budgeted expenses year to date total $162,381. Actual expenses total $163,424, just slightly over budget. As you have no ced, the work on the roof has been completed. Beginning this month (July), we will be responsible for the roof loan that totals $987 per month. Therefore, going forward, income will need to average $28,100. We appreciate your mindfulness to this added commitment. The balance owed on our line of credit to US Bank is about $11,971. Interest charged for the past month at 5.25% was $53. Thanks to everyone for their con nued generosity. Jon Kimberling and Gwen Mitchell, Treasurers

This has been an amazing year at Emmanuel Lutheran Church! We con nue to serve God in meaningful ways, and have taken significant steps in caring for our church home. Addi onally, annual giving has increased about 6% each of the last two years. Your

Stewardship Commi ee and Church Council would like you to know of an addi onal opportunity to further our mission through a financial gi .

You can buy a square of shingles for $1,000. (or a 1/2 square for $500, a 1/4 square for $250) For informa on or to contribute, please contact:

Currently, we have “raised” $29,320.00

worth of roof!

Through the ELCA World Hunger Program/Appeal we live out our "impassioned response to the

hungry and poor" of the world.

Two years ago several of us from Emmanuel and two friend from Moscow traveled to northern

Tanzania and met poor and hungry people. The ELCA World Hunger

Appeal supports efforts in Tanzania to overcome poverty and

hunger. Florence Nkini went to a seminar where she learned about

boiling her family's drinking water. Now she teaches others to do the same. She was one of four

who attended a seminar on community health sponsored by the Lutheran Church of Tanzania and ELCA World Hunger Program.

Another woman, Hawa, in central Tanzania, is a grape

farmer. Through ELCA World Hunger and Lutheran World Relief

she, along with 2000 grape farmers, has learned to increase grape production despite drought.

We hope you will join us in supporting efforts in Tanzania and other

countries where the ELCA World Hunger Program Appeal is helping

persons overcome hunger and poverty.

Our Passion for Compassion will Change the World!

What would

like to do?

Here’s an idea! Make a posi ve impact on the Sunday experience of all who enter here!

Definitely not a difficult job… but what an important one! Here is what the ELCA describes about Holy Communion:

In the Sacrament of Holy Communion, a er hearing and experiencing the good news of Jesus Christ in word, prayer and song, the community receives bread

and wine. They experience the tangible presence of Christ by ea ng and drinking these elements.

The outward signs of the sacrament are simple earthly elements: bread and wine. Yet, together with the spoken promise of God these elements convey

the presence of Jesus Christ to the assembly of believers. Mar n Luther said that Jesus is present “in, with, and under” the bread and wine.

We believe this because Jesus says it is so (Ma hew 26:26‐28, Mark 14:22‐24, Luke 22:19‐20) even when we cannot fully explain how it happens.

The presence of Jesus Christ in the sacrament of Holy Communion is a great treasure that is received in faith. In the ea ng and drinking

of bread and wine, we experience love, forgiveness and life of Christ is ours. In the sacrament, Christ takes on our sin while we take on Christ’s righteousness.

The sacrament’s emphasis is on God’s ac on rather than the strength of our faith.

Help make a significant difference during Sunday morning worship!
