JARVIS COCKER’S JOURNEYS INTO THE OUTSIDE continues until the New Year with an additional bespoke space in the gallery dedicated to the life’s work of ice crystal photographer, WILSON SNOWFLAKE BENTLEY. The installation at The Gallery of Everything is the first significant showing of Bentley’s work in the UK and includes original glass plates, along with a selection of turn-of-the-century photographs of snowflakes, ice crystals and frosts. JOURNEYS INTO THE OUTSIDE takes its name from the seminal 1998 TV series by filmmaker Martin Wallace and broadcaster and musician Jarvis Cocker. Together these two pioneers invited British viewers to explore some of the world’s most astonishing environments and to meet their often characterful makers. The display inside The Gallery of Everything recalls this historic jour- ney and features rarely-seen artworks by many of the authors from this film. Artists include Howard Finster, Nek Chand Saini, WC Rice and Chomo, as well as rarely-seen objects by Abbé Fouré, St EOM and Karl Friedrich Junker . The installation is complemented by original photographs of the en- vironments and their makers, together with regular screenings of the documentary itself. The Gallery of Everything would like to thank our friend Jarvis Cocker as well as Martin Wallace, Eve Stewart, Laurent Danchin, Kelly Lud- wig, Norman Girardot, John Maizels, Shari Cavin, Aymeric Rouillac, Scott Ogden, John Ollman, Dan Smith, Phillip March Jones, Joëlle Jouneau and the Nicastro family.

Commanded by above to paint sacred art, Howard Finster embarked on a 25 year pop crusade, anointing tens of thousands of available surfaces with visionary beliefs and unmistakable aphorisms. Fêted by the likes of Talk-ing Heads, this former TV and bicycle repairman went on to become the most celebrated autodidact in America.

1916-2001 (AMERICA)

Flamboyant, hip and streetwise, Ed-die Owens Martin was a New York hustler and fortune-telling visionary who proclaimed himself a Pasaquoy-an and became St EOM. Returning to his country boy roots, this unstop-pable art-maker then fashioned his mother’s modest Georgia farmhouse into a graphic temple of pre-Columbi-an motifs and psychedelic designs.

1908-1986 (AMERICA)

Painter, designer, craftsman and car-penter, Karl Junker’s lifetime legacy was the architectural marvel in which he lived. Known as the Junkerhaus, every fixture and fitting of this un-likely residential space was carved to an astonishing degree detail and defi-nition, although it never housed the family for which its singleton maker clearly longed.

1850-1912 (GERMANY)

When the pious and parish-less Abbé Fouré retired to the coast, he embarked upon an intense, unusual and celebrated sculptural practice. Today, the many hundreds of mythic and religious figures which he carved directly onto the coastline still stare out to sea, a monument to the memory of the self-styled Hermit of Rothéneuf.

1839-1910 (FRANCE)

Le Corbusier’s modernist vision for Chandigarh inspired village-born roads-engineer Nek Chand Saini to create his own Kingdom of Gods and Godesses. Yet what started as a modest collection of holy stones soon evolved into a vast unauthorised complex of landscape architecture and figurative sculpture, immortal-ised today as the Rock Garden.

1924-2015 (INDIA)

William Carlton Rice was a house painter and self-ordained minister whose single performative gesa-mtkunstwerk was the conversion of his land into the sprawling Cross Garden. The rough-painted crucifixes and jagged signs foretold imminent apocalyptic punishment for all who dared transgress, in language as fast and loose as that of their maker.

1930-2004 (AMERICA)Painter, sculptor, filmmaker and performer, Chomo was a multi-disciplinary art school alumni who withdrew from cultural society to build an organic art environment in the woods outside Paris. As his prolific experimentation blossomed, so he forefully rejected all attempts to objectify or commercialise his lifelong search for truth.

1907-1999 (FRANCE)

WILSON BENTLEYIt was the scientific abstractions of this pioneering image-maker which led to a greater understanding of the unique-ness, importance and beauty of this natural form. Yet Bentley was far more than a passionate hobbyist. He was an adventurer who realised the poten-tial of micro-photography and used it to capture the impossible individuality of each and every snowflake.
