Our hero on the cover is Tejal Kuna, daughter of Kiran Kuna, M.D., anesthesiology, and Radhika Kuna, M.D., cardiology.

Carroll Hospital Center h 1

Dear Friends, Patients and Supporters, Every day, we are inspired by the heroes who go above and beyond to make our community a healthier place for all—from the doctors and nurses who dedicate their lives to providing exceptional patient care to the countless associates, board members and volunteers who work around the clock to make this hospital a nationwide leader in quality and customer service.

And you won’t just find these heroes in our hallways. You’ll find them all over our community, from the friends and neighbors who take time out of their busy schedules to participate in our critical public health and patient satisfaction surveys to the generous donors who give whenever asked.

In these pages, we celebrate just a few of these heroes, but know that there are many, many more just like them. They may not be easy to spot; they don’t wear capes or special emblems. But they walk quietly among us, doing whatever they can to make a difference in this community.

We invite you to join us by giving to our special fundraising effort, the Campaign to Cure & Comfort, Always. Your gift, no matter the size, has the extraordinary power to help us expand our services and facilities, advance our technologies and bring essential wellness programs to the community. With your help, there’s no telling how high this hospital—and this community—can soar.

When William Kahlert, co-founder of Evapco, Inc., lost his valiant 12-year battle with liver cancer in 2011, his son, Greg Kahlert, wanted to pay tribute to his father—and the employees of his father’s company—in a meaningful way. His family’s foundation, the Kahlert Foundation, made an extraordinary decision: to donate $5 million to the Campaign to Cure & Comfort, Always, the first multi-million dollar gift the hospital has received in its more than 50-year history.

Greg and his wife, Roberta, are excited about the Kahlert Foundation’s ability to help others in need. “Expanding the hospital’s services that so many Evapco employees and other community members depend on is a very worthy cause,” says Greg. “Hopefully we can improve the quality of life of many people for generations to come.”

In honor of the family, the hospital’s new cancer center will be called the William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center (see page 5).

the Greatness of Giving:

The Campaign to Cure & Comfort, Always

When it comes to the power of the community, Marcus “Lee” Primm is a believer. “I have absolute faith in this community. We have always taken care of our own, and we always will.”

It’s easy to see why he thinks so. As chairman of the Campaign to Cure & Comfort, Always—the Carroll Hospital Center Foundation’s special fundraising campaign—he has witnessed incredible acts of generosity, including a record-breaking $5 million gift from the Kahlert Foundation (see previous page) and nearly $17.5 million in total gifts so far.

Now Lee and his fellow Campaign leaders are turning to the greater community to reach their ultimate goal of $22 million in donations by 2014. “People hear about the big donations and think their individual gift can’t make a difference, but it does,” he points out. “That’s not a platitude; I’ve seen the numbers. One person’s gift might help fund hospitality items for a chemotherapy patient to enjoy during treatment, while another person’s gift might help cover the expense of a new piece of equipment or technology. Every single person who gives makes an impact.”

The Campaign’s Vision

Inspired by Dr. Charles A. Billingslea’s words at the hospital’s 1961 dedication—“May we cure sometimes. May we relieve often. But may we comfort always”—the Campaign intends to fund five important plans to keep that vision alive:

the hope of healing:

The NEW William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center When the new William E. Kahlert Regional Cancer Center at Carroll Hospital Center opens its doors in the fall of 2014, expect more than just a new, modern building. Expect an entirely new approach to cancer care. “We have learned that to fight and recover from cancer requires caring for the person as a whole—physically, socially and emotionally,” explains Flavio Kruter, M.D., medical director of the cancer program.

Indeed, the center will include all the services a cancer patient could hope for, all under one roof, from nutrition counseling and financial counseling to acupuncture and wig fittings. A multi-disciplinary staff, including navigator nurses, pharmacists, social workers and spiritual care providers, will be on hand to meet patients’ every need.

Patients also will have access to the latest advancements in diagnosis and treatment, including a robust roster of clinical trials and new, state-of-the-art radiation technologies that will allow physicians to target tumors with incredible precision.

“Our cancer program has always kept up with the field’s rapidly evolving technology, and our new center will be no different,” promises David J. Salinger, M.D., radiation oncology specialist. “If there’s a community member who needs high-tech treatment, it will be available here—and it will be safer, more efficient and more comfortable than ever before.”

the power of progress:

Breakthrough Care in Our Community

Carroll Hospital Center h 7

the power of medication Safety technologyHis co-workers at the pharmacy affectionately call him “Phil,” because, quite simply, no one can fill prescriptions as accurately as he can. But to the rest of the world, “Phil” is better known as the ROBOT-Rx®, a groundbreaking automated medication dispensing system now in operation at Carroll Hospital Center—just one of five hospitals in Maryland to offer the state-of-the-art pharmacy technology.

Using barcode scanning technology, the ROBOT-Rx is able to identify, pull and appropriately label patient prescription orders with an astonishing 99.9 percent accuracy rate. All orders are checked before and after by a member of the pharmacy team, creating a virtually error-proof, triple-checked safety system.

“Hospitals that use the robot see their average error rate go from two in 100 to one in 800 million,” says Larry Siegel, Pharm.D., pharmacy department director. “It was a significant investment for our hospital—$1.2 million and months of planning and training—but when there’s technology that’s going to make patients safer, we don’t hesitate to get it.”

Even when the workday is over, you’ll probably find Dr. Jed Rosen reading up on the latest breakthroughs in health care technology. “I read and study what others are doing in the field, not because it’s my job, but because I love it,” he says.

As the hospital’s first-ever chief medical information officer, Dr. Rosen plays the critical role of ensuring that physicians and nurses have the training and resources they need to use the hospital’s information systems in ways that meaningfully improve patient care.

It’s a huge responsibility considering he’s also the hospital’s chief of surgery and a practicing ear, nose and throat surgeon—but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The future of health care depends on us sharing information, getting the right information and acting on that information,” he explains. “That’s the key to the future. That’s why I’m doing this.”

8 h 2012 Annual Report

When Kim Moreau took her first job at Carroll Hospital Center in 1988, little did she know how much her role was going to change—and how much she was going to change the hospital.

Over the years, she’s worked her way up the ladder from a night medical lab supervisor to her current role as the assistant vice president of information systems, responsible for managing all of the rapidly evolving software applications, technological hardware, telecommunications and biomedical equipment that keep the hospital running at a high-performance level.

Under her leadership, the hospital has implemented some of its most advanced technologies, including an Electronic Health Record system, the ROBOT-Rx® pharmacy system, and the da Vinci® Surgical System.

“When I first started, technology only impacted the financial side of the hospital—things like patient billings,” Kim recalls. “Now there’s no corner of the hospital that technology doesn’t make better. It’s been an incredible journey.”

Kim moReAu, m.b.A.Assistant Vice president of information Systemshero spotlight

the power of Collaborative Care technologyPatient safety is clearly one of the overarching goals behind all of Carroll Hospital Center’s technological investments. It’s the reason the hospital started investing in an Electronic Health Record (EHR) system nearly a decade before the federal government’s 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act started incentivizing hospitals to do so.

“Our conversion to EHRs has always been for patient safety first,” says Jed Rosen, M.D., chief medical information officer and chief of surgery. “The new government incentives are just icing on the cake.”

Designed to store and standardize a patient’s entire medical history in one place, the hospital’s $10 million system gives all hospital team members, “from physicians and nurses to appointment schedulers and claims processors, the ability to work from the exact same page,” explains Kim Moreau, assis-tant vice president of information systems. “That means safer, better coordinated, 360-degree collaborative care for our patients.”

the power of Groundbreaking treatment technology Carroll Hospital Center’s physicians aren’t only armed with better patient information; they’re also equipped with the latest treatment technologies—like the hospital’s new $1.9 million minimally invasive da Vinci® Surgical System.

Women’s health specialist Christos Ballas, M.D., the first surgeon in the hospital to complete a robotic hysterectomy, notes that the new da Vinci robot is enabling the hospital’s top-ranked surgical team to perform at nearly superhuman levels. “When our surgeons operate with the da Vinci, we have the power of the system’s 3-D magnified vision and three micro-precise robotic arms on our side,” he explains. “It makes complex gynecologic surgeries easier, resulting in better patient outcomes.”

With all of the hospital’s advanced minimally invasive treatment options, patients are getting the care they need with less pain, less blood loss, less scarring and faster recovery times than ever before. “I recently performed three hysterectomies in one day using the da Vinci,” notes Dr. Ballas, “and all three patients were sitting up and ready to go home the next morning.”

the Strength of our Voices:

The Community Health Needs AssessmentSometimes making a difference in your community is as simple as picking up the phone. That’s exactly what hundreds of Carroll County residents did this spring when they voluntarily took part in the Community Health Survey, a 15-minute phone or online survey that asked 1,100 randomly selected partici-pants to provide a wide range of information on their everyday health behaviors and opinions.

The survey was part of the Community Health Needs Assessment, a landmark community health evaluation and planning initiative conducted by The Partnership for a Healthier Carroll County in association with Carroll Hospital Center and the Carroll County Health Department. Using their findings from the survey and several other crucial community data resources (see sidebar), The Partnership and its cohorts were able to identify seven critical community health priorities that will help shape the future of health and wellness in Carroll County for years to come. Obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart disease were among the top issues named.

“We were amazed at the willingness of the people in our community to help out,” says Tricia Supik, R.N., M.A., executive director and CEO of The Partner-ship. “From the individuals who live here, to the businesses that practice here, to the faith communities that worship here—this was a total community effort to make Carroll County healthier.”

Community member and avid fisherman John Davis is finally ready to get back on the water, despite years of struggling with a 40-year-old knee injury. It’s all thanks to the new custom-fit knee replacement he received at Carroll Hospital Center under the care of orthopaedic surgeon Jason Hammond, M.D.

Unlike traditional knee replacements, the revolutionary new procedure uses MRI scans and 3-D models of the patient’s knee to create a completely customized replacement that perfectly aligns with the patient’s unique joint structure. It’s just the latest addition to Carroll Hospital Center’s arsenal of state-of-the-art, minimally invasive orthopaedic treatment options, which includes arthroscopic ACL and rotator cuff repair; endoscopic

carpal tunnel repair; XLIF (Lumbar Interbody Fusion) herniated disc repair; and direct anterior hip replacements. Performed by the hospital’s elite team of board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic specialists, these procedures are getting patients back on their feet with astounding speed.

Making recovery even easier is Carroll Hospital Center’s orthopaedic specialty unit, which is staffed by specialists from Central Maryland Rehabilitation Services and includes spacious, all-private patient rooms and an on-site physical therapy gym stocked with the latest rehabilitative equipment. “I think it’s the best thing I ever did,” says John of his knee replacement procedure. “This year, I’ll be ready for rockfish season.”

hero spotlight

When Jeffrey Scott was a boy, family vacations were always planned around hospital equipment conventions. “My father [Board of Directors founding member David Scott] was an engineer by training, and was passionate about bringing the latest health care tools to this community.”

It’s a long-running family passion that began when Jeff’s grandfather and hospital co-founder, Dr. Charles Billingslea, launched a one-man letter-writing campaign in 1947 to get a hospital built in Carroll County. Since then, most of Jeff’s family have been a part of the hospital community, including his father; his mother-in-law, Virginia Beemer, who volunteered at and helped manage the hospital’s gift shop for many years; and his mother, Betty Scott, who dedicated her career to caring for others as a floor nurse and health aide instructor. “My father [Dr. Billingslea] worked hard to convince people that we needed a hospital here,” says Betty. “His commitment inspired my commitment to nursing.”

Today, Jeff and his wife, Susie, carry on their family’s legacy. Jeff has been an active member of the Carroll Hospital Center Foundation’s Planned Giving Committee since 2003, and both he and Susie have included Carroll Hospital Center in their estate plans. Their two daughers are health care professionals.

“My grandfather taught us that you cannot put a price on saving lives,” Jeff recalls. “We want to help make sure this hospital is always here for the community, so we have made giving a family priority.”
