Life Hacks For School

Welcome Mr. Harsha

College Fieldtrips for BMS Students

Page 2

By Gabby Juarez. Let’s have good school year this year. Today I’ll give 6 life hacks to make school much easier. Life hack #1: Can’t wake up on time? Put your phone in a glass cup, so when it rings, it’s going to ring loudly. And you’ll be sure to get up quickly and turn it off. Life hack #2: Compliment your teach-ers. Whether it’s on their nails, shirt, or outfit. It will make them like you. Life hack #3: Trying to study for a quiz? Study before bedtime. It’ll make the information stick in your mind much easier. Life hack #4: If you don’t want to

share your gum with your friends, take 2 gum boxes. One empty, one full. So when your friends ask you for gum, pull out the empty gum box. It’ll save your gum. Life hack #5: Keep chapstick around; it is super helpful. Not only for chapped lips, but also for paper cuts, just apply on the cut. Life hack #6: Got a headache? Chew on your pencil; it can help re-lieve the pain. Hopefully these little known “hacks” will help your school year get off to a great start.

By JD Bullock. AVID and Honor Bound are two classes that have students preparing for college at a young grade. The trip will take place in a couple of weeks, and the students are pumped for it. “When the children are at the cam-pus,” said AVID teacher and football coach Mr. Miller, “they will be taken

on a tour of the campus, watch a presentation, and see the dorms.” This trip will last the whole school day: 9:00AM-3:00PM. The 7th graders are getting ready to go to Ball State; the 8th graders will be pumped for Butler. These trips will be taken in late Octo-ber or early November.

Belzer staff and students welcome their new principal, Mr. Harsha. He comes to us from Lawrence North High School where he served as Freshman school principal after teaching there. Prior to teaching at LN, he taught Language Arts to sixth graders at Craig Middle School before it closed. He has been in Lawrence Township since 2001. Mr. Harsha is a graduate of Ball State University where he met his wife, Jessica who is a nurse. He is married and has 2 children: Hudson is 7 years old and Henly is 4. He has a dog named Murphy. Some of Mr. Harsha’s favorites are pizza and chocolate chip cookies. His favorite color is blue. He enjoys being outside including going fishing. “I love it here,” Mr. Harsha told reporters. He is very im-pressed with the staff and stu-dents. If you haven’t met Mr. Harsha yet, take some time to greet him in the halls when you see him.

By Dionna Evans. Former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne visit-ed with the New England Patriots. He took a physical Sunday, August 23, 2015. The Green Bay Packers were also interested in Wayne at that time. Wayne spent 14 seasons in Indianap-olis and Ranks No. 7 in NFL in recep-tions. He also rank No. 8 in receiving yards. He was the Colts first-round pick in 2001, and also served as part of a dynamic offense directed by Peyton Manning. He is one of the most popu-lar Indianapolis Colts players in history and is now relocating to his former

team’s most resentful rival. He will now spend his 15th NFL season in New England. He will be playing for an offense directed by Tom Brady.

By Martia Holston. Belzer’s busiest athletic season is the fall. Therefore, many students are involved in practices and games right now. For example, there are at least 70 players on the 8th grade football team alone. These players have high hopes for their season this year. “My goal is to be a good football player and to go undefeated,” stated William Al-len, number 21. Daveren Rayner, number 7 on the team, said, “My goal is to get better at playing football.” The players said the

coach makes them become better through practice . The second home game on August 20th had #43, Cor-taveon Barnett, scoring a touchdown. There was a touchdown scored by Travis Upshaw, also. The next 7th grade home game is tonight, Sept. 1, and the 8th grade plays at home on Thursday, Sept. 3. Also, any student wearing Belzer gear can get

into the game free on Thursday. Come out and support our teams!

By Jose Xochitecatl and Kaylin Boring. This year volley-ball teams are ready for a great year. Mr. Raymond has high hopes for 7th grade volleyball team. With each game the team learns more about the game and the strategies used. The main goal is to help the Belzer vol-

leyball team learn the basics so that they can be prepared for high school. The next volleyball game will be today against Raymond Park; it will be a home game. Mr. Raymond and the team are ready for a good year of volleyball.

Dear Em and Ab, How do I avoid drama at school? It seems like there is always drama to get into. There are fights and conflicts between people, or about other people. Rumors start and things can get out of hand. I don’t want to get into it. From “Not-a-drama mama”

Dear “Not…”, Based on the information we gathered from students, these were the most common issues people think that start drama: fighting over boyfriends or girlfriends, who is right and who is wrong, false facts, and ethnicity. If someone is talking about you behind your back the best thing you can do is ignore it. If it gets out of hand, tell an adult. We know this can be hard, but if you get upset, it may make the person talk about you more. Some drama even leads to physical fights. No matter how interesting it may seem or how much it may seem like the answer to your drama, stay away from the fighting. Even if you're just a bystander, you are involved. So ignore the haters and stay out of drama.

If you have a problem or concern, send your letter to Em and Ab on the Canvas All School page as a message to Mrs. Trotter.

Cabela’s Grand Opening: Fishers

Volume 3 Issue 1

By Addison Hoppes and Charlie Nelson. Brittany Nicole Creech has definitely changed the looks for Senior pictures. Instead of the normal outdoor glamour shots, this student decided to change it up. So she had her pictures taken at her favorite place to hangout, Taco Bell! The high school senior’s goal was to have unique pictures, and she sure did meet that goal. Not only did she have this clever

idea, she absolutely pulled it off! On twitter, she tweeted “Remember when I told you guys I was gonna get my senior pic-tures at Taco Bell and you thought I was joking.” She definitely was-n’t joking. The teen has now gone viral on the internet. She even got tweeted by Taco Bell with her pic-tures saying “Senior picture goals”.

By Bryce Alpers. On Aug. 20th, 3,000 people gathered in front of the new Cabela’s building near Hamilton Town Center Mall waiting for its grand opening. At 10:00 A.M. a ribbon cutting took place officially opening its doors. It took years of planning, but the 82,000 square foot store be-came reality. The grand opening lasted an entire weekend giving the first 500 people Cabela’s gift cards. The project cost $2.5 mil-lion.

The store is considered a next-gen store; it is larger and more

profitable according to the com-pany’s financial statements. The store’s interior is similar to other Cabela’s which contains an indoor mountain, aquarium, wildlife dis-plays, and stonework--all to give customers an outdoor experience while shopping. Special features include an in-door archery range, a cafe, a fudge shop, boat shop, a gun li-brary, and a bargain cave. The staff will sometimes host semi-nars and demonstrations. The store brought smiles to tons of outdoor enthusiasts.

By Bryce Alpers. Texas has a history of problems with Feral Hog (hogs that es-caped from domestication and contin-ued breeding.) Recently the problem has been in Liberty County, Texas. At Liberty High School the football team’s biggest rival is a team of Feral

Hogs. Every night the hogs come and tear up the field causing the team to move up the field to practice only giv-ing them a small area in which to do so. The team thinks they are coming from the woods that are behind the

school and plan to set up a high-tech trap. The trap’s game cam-era will send a picture to a team member’s phone and then the member can text “close” to the trap to release the door. They plan on catching a large enough number to cut down on the prob-lem.

New Beak for Brazilian

Toucan

Representing Us Well

Page 5

By Jacqueline DuBois. Three U.S. citizens and one French citizen saved France from a terrorist attack. The terrorist was identi-fied as Ayoub El Khazzani. The French au-thorities said that it was very clear he was planning a massacre. European official said that he might have been connected with a group of French ISIS fighters in Tur-key. The four heroes were; Anthony Sad-

ler, Spencer Stone, Alek Skarlatos and a French citi-zen who has not been identi-fied. Alek Skarlatos is a Na-tional Guardsman based in Oregon. Anthony Sadler is a senior at California State University- Sac-ramento. Spencer Stone is in the U.S. Air Force. The three U.S. citizens were award-

ed the Légion d'Honneur medal for their heroism.

By Estefania Cinto. A Brazilian toucan had part of her upper beak missing, but thanks to tech-nology, she now has a new beak. Tieta a Brazilian Toucan was rescued from an illegal animal market at Rio de Janeiro. After her rescue, they had then taken her to a Free Flight Institute for help. Her beak was broke after her owners had mistreated her. Due to her upper beak missing, she had trouble eating and cleaning her feathers. Without a beak someone would be depend-ent of her. Brazilian researchers had seen her struggle and decided to print her a 3D beak. It took them a couple of months to make her beak. They had created four different ones. It had took her three days to learn how to use it. Researchers believe if she didn’t have a beak, life would have been risky. They won’t be releasing her back into the wild because she will need more monitoring. In the future they will decide whether to let her go or keep her. They will be creating a sanctuary for her and for people to learn her story.

By Gabby Jua-rez. Donald Trump is big in the news these days. Not only because he is a Republi-can running for presi-dent in the 2016 presi-

dential election, but because he is consistently making comments that shock people. For example, he called Mexicans ‘rapists and criminals.’ Not so bright is he, huh? Not only did he call Mexicans rapists, he also said to black people, “Our great African American President hasn’t exactly had a posi-tive impact on the thugs who are so happily and openly destroying Baltimore.” Also he kicked Univision news journalist Jorge Ramos out of a press conference because he asked a question to Trump about his plan on illegal immigration saying that Trump’s plan is ‘full of empty promises.’ Do we really need a stereotypical person running for president? Do we want the future of America in his hands? He even wants to try and deport all 11 million illegal immigrants in the US. Does he know how much that will cost? ...how much it will affect our GDP? ...how many families will be separated? Also companies and agriculture will be hit hard. He also wants to build a ‘great wall’ along our southern border and says, “The wall will go up and Mexico will start behaving.” This will cost us millions of dollars. Yes, the world is full of harsh people. However, some people are “fighting” back in the best way they can. For example, Univision, the largest Spanish lan-guage broadcaster, says it will no longer air Miss USA or Miss Universe, which is partially owned by Donald Trump. He had been disinvited to a major event called RedState. Also Macy’s has decided that it will no longer sell his signature clothing items at its stores. (Incidentally, parts of his clothing line is made in Mexico.) Many of these things mean financial loss. Amazingly, he is leading the polls; what are people thinking? Trump for Presi-dent?

New Discoveries on Pluto

Page 6

Volume 3 Issue 1

By Maximiliano Rogers. NASA’s New Hori-zons mission has been on it’s way to Pluto for around 9 years; it arrived at the begin-ning of 2015 and some interesting things have been found on the dwarf planet. The New Horizons mission had its first flyby of Pluto on July 14, 2015 it launched on Jan-uary 1,2006. Something new that they recently found was that there was flowing ice on the dwarf planet. Which reveals that Pluto is a icy world of wonders. John Grunsfeld recently said that they knew that a mission to Pluto would bring sur-prises and now we can say our expecta-tions have been more than surpassed. Just after seven hours after close approach New Horizons aimed its Long Range Recon-

naissance Imager back at Pluto capturing sunlight streaming through the atmos-phere. Also it revealed hazes as high as 80 miles above Pluto's surface. Michael Summers recently said that “The hazes de-tected in this image are a key element in creating the complex hydrocarbon com-pounds that give Pluto’s surface its reddish hue. Models have suggested that the hazes form when ultraviolet sunlight breaks up methane gas particles. The breakdown of methane triggers the build up of more complex hydrocarbon gases like ethylene and acetylene, which also were discovered in Pluto's atmosphere by New Horizons.

Bear Pool Party

By Bryce Alpers. An ordinary afternoon turned into a pool party by some guest that are real par-ty animals…a family of Black Bears. A Rockaway, New Jersey family caught a mother Black Bear and her five cubs playing in their pool on video. The bear family damaged a few pool toys and tore out the filter. The daughter of the family did-n't like sharing her toys with the bears and start-ed to get scared. After a few hours of swimming, going down the slide, and rough housing, police officers showed up and scared the bears away. By Addison Hoppes. Banksy, a pseu-donymous British artist, has recreat-ed “the worlds happiest place”, Dis-neyland. However, Instead of fun kid rides, exciting moments, and happy people, Dismaland is a mock amusement park filled with de-pressing art, grumpy people, and sorrow. The “bemusement” park opened August 22nd and will be open to the public for five weeks only. Most of the art work is based on politics, immigration, the future, and law enforcement. The park is built on what used to be a Lido, a wa-terpark, but is now turned into a derelict so-

called art museum. Even though the park is filled with depressing art, it can still be applied to a fun family day out; especially because Banksy is known for his showbiz. The tickets to visit Dis-maland went on sale for £100, and sold out within 45 minutes. Around 4,000 tickets were bought. Even though the park seems sad, it is be-coming one of the biggest tourist attractions in the U.K.

It’s a Strange World After All

By Kendall Butrum-G. and Bre Brown. Ann and Ken Freder-icks celebrate their 60th wed-ding anniversary by eating a bite of their wedding cake which has been stored in a coffee can in their freezer since their wedding day. The couple was married in Nyack,

New York in 1955. At that time, Ann’s grandma made the cake just days before the wedding so it would settle, and then put the icing on the day of the wedding

Every anniversary they have had since that day, they each have taken a bite of it. At this

point, when they take it out of the freezer they pour a bit of brandy over it to make it moist and then break off a piece. They hope to live long enough to see the day it’s gone.

By Jacqueline DuBois & Katie Allen. Over 50 of your favorite shows, artists, and so-cial media sensations won awards at the Teen Choice Awards and more than 25 million votes were received to determine the winners. The Teen Choice Music Awards is an annual show where teens can vote for who they want nominated to win an award of recognition. The winners also win a surf-board that they keep. The ac-tion for the battle of who is nominated takes place on Twitter where teens tweet out their favorites with the hashtag provid-ed for the show. They can also use Insta-gram or Facebook to cast their votes. Voting occurred from June 10, 2015, 3:00 PM (PT) through August 16, 2015, 8:00 PM (EST). After the nominees are chosen the real battle for the awards begins. The live show was held August 16th 8-10PM. In a matter of two hours, all of the winners were decided and announced on live TV. The awards that were not an-nounced on the show were posted on the shows website later that night. Kian Law-

ley, the winner of “Choice Youtuber” was not aware of his winnings until after the show when he checked the website. Twitter was then sent into an-other frenzy because of the award show itself. Another award not announced was “Social Media King.” The winner of the surfboard in this category was none other than Justin Bieber himself. Caitlyn Jenner went on to win “Social Media Queen,” another category not announced on TV. One Direction, not at the show due to their tour, made a clean sweep this year taking home 8 surf boards. These awards included: Choice Selfie Taker, Choice Male Hottie, Choice Summer Tour: On The Road Again , Choice Party Song: No Control, Choice Love Song: Night Changes, Choice Song for a Group: Steal My Girl, Choice Music Group Male, and Choice Summer Music Star Group. The most talked about

category was Choice Web Star: Male. This award along with Choice Webstar Female were not announced until around the end of the show. The winner of Choice Web-star Male was none other than Cameron Dallas and the Female Webstar was Betha-ny Mota. These were just some of the many winners for the 2015 Teen Choice Awards. Congratulations to all the win-ners!

By Ariel Leistner. The annual summer con-cert for the freaks, misfits and the kids who grew up too fast recently ended this year in Auburn, Washington, but not before making a stop in Noblesville in late July. This year Warped Tour consisted of 40 shows and over 300 bands total, including

Pierce the Veil, Black Veil Brides, Memphis May Fire, Night Riots, PVRIS and Never Shout! Never. This year may have been one of the most epic years for the tour, and what better way to enjoy it then from backstage or even on stage. Former Belzer students,

Carli Phelps, Hope Wheeler, and Mer-cedes Lord had the opportunity to do just that. Thanks to the Music Saves Lives or-ganization, the three got backstage passes as a result of donating blood for the Indianap-olis Blood Drive. While wandering

backstage, Carli, Hope and Mercedes met a few famous faces… the frontmen from both Pierce the Veil, Vic Fuentes and Never Shout! Never, Christofer Drew. Not only did they get pictures but souvenirs such as Christofer Drew`s bracelet. So next time Warped Tour comes around be sure to get your tickets and donate blood if you really want to extend the con-cert to its full potential.

To All Art Lovers

Belzer’s Top Five

Page 9

By Kendall Butrum G. and Bre’Shay Brown. Creating artwork doesn’t have to be a diffi-cult or tedious process. It can be fun and give beautiful results. Here is an art project to try that only takes 4 “ingredients”. What you will need:

-A white canvas -Watercolor paints -Blue Elmer’s squeezable glue -Salt

To start, take the watercolor paints and paint whatever colors you’d like all over the canvas, making sure they are completely covering all white spots on the canvas.

While it is still wet, take the glue and you squeeze it in any pattern you want, making sure to do it quickly so it doesn’t dry. Then take the salt, pour it in your hand and sprinkle it wherev-er you want. That salt will absorb most of the water, which has the color in it and it will make a small spot with a really faded color of what was on that part of your canvas. Let it dry completely then rub all of the salt off of the canvas with a finger or the back of an old gift card. If the canvas is already on a frame, it is ready to hang.

By Cindy Gallegos. A lot of kids, teen, and even grown ups are listening to music on

the radio lately and they are loving the amazing songs that the singers have been coming up with. Singers are rising with all of the popular songs that they’ve written. Students and staff here at Belzer are particu-larly fond of a few stars. First up: Nicki

Minaj who is amazing for her amazing talent and awesome songs! She has won the choice r&b/hip hop at the Kids Choice Awards (KCA). She is also made an appear-ance on billboard #HOT100FEST on Aug. 23. Next up is the award winner of the KCA singer/songwriter: Shawn Mendes. He even have a concert on August 17 where

he surprised the crowd with a new song which by the way for the first time, he sang without a guitar and the only bad thing was that the sound system was not working that well but at the end it all

worked out.He is a canadian singer who started out by doing covers of songs and posting them on vine. Next on the top 5 list: The Weeknd! He is a very popular star who was

born on born February 16, 1990.His stage name is The Weeknd but not much of his fans know that his real name is Abel Tesfaye. He is a canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He started out in 2010 when he anonymously post-ed songs youtube by the name of “The Weeknd”.

Belzer’s poll resulted in 5 Sec-onds of Summer, a popular group of guys, as their #4 pick. They were voted best summer song for “She’s Kinda Hot”. They started out in Sydney, Australia (2011) and their names are Luke Hem-

mings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ash-ton Irwin. They have 10 up-coming events in September, so they are really busy with all of their fans. And last but not least… Becky G! She has performed in the NCA (Nick Choice Awards) and so much more! She was born on March 2, 1997 and her real name is Rebbeca Marie Gomez. She sings pop-rap and latino-pop.She began in 2011 by posting videos on youtube and was discov-ered by Dr.Luke. Her boyfriend, austin ma-hone, is on Becky G’s video: “Loving So Hard”.

Emoji Pillows

Party DIY: Would You Rather…?

Page 10

Paint Bomb Battle

By Jasmyn Songer. Emojis pillows have been really popular lately so here is the information you need to make one. The materials you will need:

yellow fleece Pillow stuffing

Red and black felt (or the colors of your choice) hot glue gun or Fabric glue scissors Needle and thread (optional)

Instructions: 1. Double up the yellow fleece with the right sides facing in and the wrong sides facing out. Grab a circular object from your house and trace it onto your fabric (make sure it’s the size you want your pillow to be). Then use a ruler to trace a ½ inch seam allowance and cut it out, this step will give you enough room to sew. 2. Once you’ve done that, you sew it together (if you want to you can use

fabric glue instead) when sewing it together leave an opening that you’ll be able to fit your hand through. 3. Sketch out the details of the emoji of your choice onto a piece of paper (Or print out the emoji of your choice,) then cut it out to make the templates. Place the cut outs onto the felt then trace it and cut it out. 4. Order the face pieces on your pillow until it looks good to you then hot glue them on (fabric glue can also work). 5. Let the glue settle then add as much pillow bedding you want thru the opening.

6. Once your done with that close up

the opening with hot glue. 7.

*Tip: When cutting out the face for your emoji pillow make sure it’s the right size; if your pillow was bigger you would need a bigger face and if your pillow was smaller you would need a smaller face*

By Sheridan Gutzwiller. Here is a simple DIY to do at home with friends. You will need to cut about 20-50 slips of paper about .5 inch-es tall and 3 inches wide, have a Sharpie or chalk marker, a Mason jar or empty tomato sauce, paint (acrylic) (any color) and sponge brush to paint the jar. First, you need to write random choices on the pieces of paper. For example, you could write: “eat chips with chocolate or candy with salt”, or “kiss a frog or pet a snake”, etc.) Next, fold each piece of paper

in half and put them in a Ziploc bag. Then, pick your choice of paint (make sure it is ACRYLIC paint) and put the paint into a pa-per cup. After that, use your sponge brush to coat your jar in your paint. Paint two coats. Only paint the outside of the jar; painting the inside will take days to dry. Write on the outside “Would You Rather…?” with your Sharpie. Finally, You're done with your jar. Now you can play this game with everyone at the party.

By JD Bullock. If you want to go play paint-ball, but don’t want to get hurt, then this is your ticket to making your own “paintball.” Here's the materials you will need:

40-80 Empty Balloons

Water Coloring A white shirt

The first thing you should do to start making the “weapons,” is to take each balloon and fill it with water, like a wa-

ter balloon. Next you will need to split the bal-loons into even amounts, and fill the

two groups of balloons with opposite col-ors. Finally, you need to tie the balloons, of course, and make sure everyone who is playing has a white shirt on, dirty pants, and safety goggles on, then go crazy! Don’t worry, the coloring will mark off.

By Alaiaa Brittain. Indiana’s Flat 12 Bierwerks company has made Dog Beer. This beer does not have alcohol in it, but it is named dog beer and is for your dog. The question is: What is it made out of?

This canine beer is made out of meat bone and trimmings. This is donated from the neighbor of the the brewery: Smoking Goose. The brewers themselves have tasted it and said it tastes like soup broth. This idea was made for the benefit of dogs for adoption. Every bowl costs 1 dol-lar per dog and that dollar goes to animal shelters. There are also Dog cupcakes. This beer takes about 3 hours to make because of the added ingredients. They

mash them then the water that comes out of the ingredients; it looks like actual beer even though it is not. The sale of this product is for a good cause. If parents won’t let the dog drink it, tell them that it’s not alcoholic.

Come support our athletic teams dur-

ing September and October. Cheer

them on to victory!

Any student wearing Belzer gear on

Aug. 3 will be admitted to the game

at no cost. See you at the field on
