Q: During my singles match, my opponent hit her first serve into the net. The ball ended up in the middle of the service box but my opponent did not make an attempt to move it. I requested that she move the ball off the court but my opponent stated that she was fine with the ball laying there. Since the ball was on her side of the net does he have to move it?

A: Just because the ball is on your opponent’s side does not mean he is the king of that side of the court. The server should respect their opponent’s request to remove the ball from the court. Whenever a ball is not in play, a player must honor an opponent’s request to remove a ball from the court or from an area outside the court that is reason-ably close to the lines. (Code 42).

Have you ever had a dispute with a fellow player over a call on the court that you couldn’t settle? Maybe you’re just curious about how some scenarios, from the

common to the ridiculous, are resolved.

President’s Report

Jennifer StiebelingNJTC President

March 14-15 brought us a nice little snow storm before Trio teams were to take the courts on March 20th.

The aftermath of the storm, however, was no match for shovels, squeegees and brooms in the hands of NJTC. I’d like to thank those who worked diligently to help clear the courts so the first week of Trio could take place.

Kathleen Harvey - met me at 10:45am to start to process

Alex Manwaring - worked with us till he had to start his shift at the front desk

Jess Mitchell - worked a morning shift and a late afternoon shift

Bryan Pivovar and Kevin Thistle - the muscle who moved a lot of heavy snow in the afternoon

Susan Tomlinson, Laura Pivovar, Natasha Uecker - joined us later in the afternoon

Finally…

Mark Stiebeling - my wonderful NON tennis playing husband who help out for 5 of the 8 hours!

Hopefully that’s the last major snow as additional leagues start up this month!

Speaking of leagues… since we are not allowed to socialize after matches at the ATC, it makes me wonder where we will be in July for our planned fundraiser. I don’t know what restrictions will still be in place at that time… I don’t think anyone does.

Our club is full of very generous members who are interested in making/keeping the Apex Tennis Center THE place to play, and who are dedicated to promoting tennis in general. The four outdoor cabanas are a direct result of our fundraising efforts in 2019.

What would be your wish for 2021?? Please drop me a note with any suggested enhancements to the ATC or to any tennis related cause. Hopefully we’ll be able to gather for a morning of drills, watching Wim-bledon, strawberries & creme, Pimm’s cups, mimosas, and fundraising.

MAKE A WISH!

If we are not able hold the event perhaps we can roll a little something extra into Tennis Palooza in September.

Picking up where we left off last month...

4) Who can call a double bounce or a player reaching over before hitting the ball or touching the net?

A player shall concede the point when:

• A ball in play touches that player;

• That player touches the net or oppo-nent’s court while a ball is in play;

• That player hits a ball before it crosses the net;

• That player deliberately carries or dou-ble hits a ball; or

• A ball bounces more than once in that player’s court.

The opponent is not entitled to make these calls. The principle of giving the opponent the benefit of any doubt ap-plies. Use good sportsmanship and if your opponent doesn’t admit to something you think happened, let it go.

5) What about a let on a serve? The ser-vice is a let if: The ball served touches the net, strap or band, and is otherwise good; or after touching the net, strap or band,

touches the receiver or the receiver’s part-ner or anything they wear or carry before hitting the ground; (didn’t know that one!) or the ball is served when the receiver is not ready. Anyone on the court can call a let; sometimes a keen ear is needed.

6) During a point, a ball or other object that was lying on the player’s side of the net when the point started hinders the player. Is this a hindrance? Decision: No. The player should have cleared it before the point started.

7) Is a player allowed to use more than one racket at any time during play?Decision: No.

8) Ball touching any part of line is good. If any part of a ball touches a line, the ball is good. A ball 99% out is still 100% good. A player shall not call a ball out unless the player clearly sees space between where the ball hits and a line. If you aren’t sure or you and your partner disagree, it is good. Don’t call a ball out until it hits the ground. If you want to call your partner off, yell “bounce it” or “watch”.

9) Between points, a maximum of twenty five (25) seconds is allowed unless a player has to chase a stray ball. When the players

KNOW BEFOREYOU GO! Part 2

change ends at the end of a game, a max-imum of ninety (90) seconds are allowed. However, after the first game of each set and during a tie-break game, play shall be continuous and the players shall change ends without a rest.

10) Body movement. A player may feint with the body while a ball is in play. A player may change position at any time, including while the server is tossing a ball. Any other movement or any sound that is made solely to distract an opponent, including, but not limited to, waving arms or racket or stamping feet, is not allowed. (I’ve had this happen in matches!) Give them a warning and if it continues, claim the point.

Let the games begin.... or not!Trio Tennis league almost wasn’t after the Blizzard of 2021 which left

the 8 outdoor courts at the ATC covered in more than 2 feet of snow and ice. It looked like the scheduled start of Trio Tennis on Saturday the 20th was going to be delayed indefinitely.

But our fearless leader “Super Stiebeling” was not going to give up without a fight. Jen assembled a small army of recruits to push brooms and squeegees around the courts (no shovels on these courts!). She gathered a top scientist, teachers, techies, our man Alex and even the man of the house, Mark to solve this problem. Jen and her army started at 10 am and worked until 6:30 pm. It took brains and brawn, and that was just from Bryan Pivovar, and a lot of determination to push back all that snow. Well done team!

This Sunday, April 4th, Easter Sunday, marks the start of Mixed Tennis at 12 noon and 3pm. This is always a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon at either the ATC or Majestic View Park playing or watching our friends battling it out.

the social report

April 19th is the beginning of Men’s and Women’s league tennis; Monday through Thursdays starting at 5pm at the ATC and the nearby satellite courts.

Now is also the time to be putting togeth-er teams for the next mini-seasons that start in May and June. So, if you somehow missed getting a team together for the current leagues, there are always new ones starting soon!For more league information go to:https://njtctennis.com/ https://tennislink.usta.com/

Saturday, April 24th is the Big Dog Ten-nis Event which is our last winter indoor Social date for now. The 1st group plays from 4 to 6pm with the 2nd group follow-ing from 6 to 8pm. As of this writing, we have 25 registered players about evenly split between men and women with a maximum capacity of 32. A backup list will be kept by Kevin, your Social Guy, so if you’re number 33 plus, there is a good chance that you could get a call to fill in.

Your Club (NJTC) is working with the APEX staff to arrange summer tennis events. In the past, we have played on Sat-

urday afternoons and we hope to be able to continue in either May or June. Some of the 4.0 players have suggested playing on a Friday night with a fast-paced format.

I would love to hear from you all with any ideas and suggestions you may have for fun summer tennis. Email or text me with your ideas. I will select a lucky tennis bum from all of those I hear from to receive either your favorite beverage or complimentary drill with your favorite pro at the APEX Tennis Center.

Tennis Addicts and Nuts (TANS) is scheduled for Saturday mornings at the ATC through April. Keep a lookout for those emails from Julie for the weather updates from the tennis gods. Send an email to [email protected] to join the TANS mailing list.

This is going to be a great year! for tennis! CU on the courts!

Real life super heroes Jen & Mark Stiebeling led the charge wielding squeegees and brooms to protect and clear the courts at ATC on Friday, March 19th so that Trio could begin as scheduled on March 20th!
