Leaders of the electric vehicle revolution in the Middle East

Sharing a common mission and passion with the Global EVRT team, we were delighted with the public’s reception of the Chevrolet Bolt EV. We at Chevrolet, are committed to playing a major role in the next chapter of the Middle East electrification story. This Electric Vehicle Road Trip was the perfect way to give the public a chance to get behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and experience it for the very first time. The EVRT Middle East has established its legacy and we are very proud of our involvement. We will carry this common message forward to accelerate the adoption of Electric Vehicle in this market and beyond.

Molly PeckChief Marketing Officer, General Motors Middle East

Electric Vehicles are definitely the future, it’s not an “if” it’s a “when”. The EVRT Middle East provides great focus for our hotels to start installing electric vehicle chargers in an area which is growing in terms of its adoption of electric vehicles. Being the first hotel company to have charging stations in Sohar and Muscat is fantastic for us and for our customers. The idea is they come to our hotel to recharge their personal batteries but equally their car battery as well.

Adrian White Head of Global Partnerships for IHG

We firmly believe in an EV future, Since the early planning phase of The Sustainable City we considered clean mobility as one of the essentials solutions in our strategy to shape this model of future cities. We share a similar mission with the Global EVRT, and this event gives us an ideal platform to engage with different stakeholders, discuss latest innovations, and give the residents and the public a first-hand experience of zero emissions transportation.

Karim El Jisr Executive Director, SEE NEXUS Institute

Starting from our vision and mission to be a leading reference in utilities by providing safe, reliable and efficient electricity, Nama Group is keeping pace with the global trends towards using clean energy and to empower scientific research in the energy fields. Our story started from “Nama Group Musharaka Conference 2017” which put a spotlight to electric vehicles as part of scenario planning to create the future of the Group. Our participation in the EVRT Middle East event and sponsoring the first charging station in Oman that use solar energy, is a solid step towards achieving our goals. We look forward to contributing in enabling the use of electric energy in the transportation sector, reducing carbon emissions and strengthening the infrastructure of the economy in Oman.

Atif Al Alawi Group Brand & Stakeholder Manager for NAMA Group

In 20 years I’ve been working in this beautiful country and I’ve never been so often in the newspapers or on TV. This, by itself, is already a big achievement for the EVRT Middle East 2018. It was a great pleasure being part of this fantastic event, working with and being associated with companies like IHG Group, and having the opportunity to meet with key organisations such as Nama Group. Electric vehicles are the future of transport and they will soon be a common sight on the UAE’s roads. We are delighted to be helping to lay the foundations for a revolution in transport in the Middle East. We would be very happy if we can support Global EVRT in future events.

Key Findings

Sultanate of Oman

We found that there was very little knowledge of electric vehicles, from the public as well as industry, however there is a clear eagerness to embrace this technology, especially from the government. The key stakeholders from industry and government very quickly responded to our announcement of driving to Oman for the road trip and we gained incredible support and partnerships, most notably from Nama Group, the holding company of the electricity company in Oman.

We were also welcomed and supported by Riyada, the public authority on SME. . We surpassed our target of attendees to our roundtable in Muscat and received strong attention from the press and media.

Currently there are no policies or regulations for electric vehicles in Oman, and no cars are being sold there, although Nur Majan have impressibly built the first Omani EV! Most people we engaged with in Oman had never seen an electric car and were surprised to hear how far we had travelled!”

There were no public charging stations before our event, and no standards or regulations for charging stations to be installed and maintained. We hope that now that GreenParking have built a network of charging stations that this will quickly change.

United Arab EmiratesThe Sustainable Transport section of the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) grew considerably this year, which indicates the growth of the industry, as well as our ability to host a larger conference that focused on the future of Mobility and took place at WFES.

We found that the public of the UAE are a lot more familiar with electric cars than they were 12 months ago, but they still have a lot of basic questions. Generally speaking the audiences we engaged on the road trip and at our events were keen to adopt the technology but felt the prices were still too high and they did not understand the full cost benefits associated with total cost of ownership.

In the past 12 months the following incentives for the public to buy electric vehicles were announced by H.E Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy and MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA): free charging at public Dewa Green Chargers until the end of 2019, free car registration fee, free salik registration fee, free parking in designated areas. The Dubai government also plan to double their number of charging stations this year from 100 to 200.

Charging Statistics

Overview

Each car charged 9 times in total, on average every 220km (never charging from empty)

This road trip is possible with only 5 charges for the Chevrolet Bolt EV or the Tesla Model S and Model X

We mainly used 22kwh charging stations built by GreenParking across the UAE and Oman. Faster charging station infrastructure is available, but is rarely needed since charging a car is usually done overnight.

Chevrolet Bolt EV

These cars need 12 hours to charge the battery from 0-full on the 22kwh charging stations. Note that although the power output is 22kWh charging is limited to 7kWh due to the cars only accepting domestic supply of power. These cars charged on average 60 hours each across 10 days, that’s 6 hours per day since we never emptied the battery.

However, the Chevrolet Bolt EV can be charged 0-full in around 2 hours at the DC high speed charging stations that can be found in Dubai and supplied by DEWA through the Green Charger Initiative. This provides an option to fast charge on occasions when a fast charge is needed. However, the majority of charging, even during the long distance EVRT Middle East, can be done overnight and on a slow pace of charging.

Tesla

Depending on the specification of the Tesla models they need between 3 and 8 hours to charge the battery from 0-full on the 22kWh charging stations. The difference arises from the different specifications. Standard specifications from Tesla allows for charging at a maximum of 11kWh on a 22kw AC charging. An upgraded specification allows to double this charging on AC. These cars charged on average 40 hours each across 10 days, that’s 4 hours per day since we never emptied the battery.

9.5 barrels of oil we saved!

Cost and energy comparison to complete the 2,000km journey of our road trip:

Electric vs Petrol

Fuel comparison

If petrol cars did our road trip: 8 cars travelling 2,000km would need 1,506 litres of petrol, that’s 9.5 barrels of oil we saved! A fantastic achievement, but there are still improvements to be made. Your electric cars is only as ‘clean’ as your electricity source. The switch to renewables, particularly to solar, that is already being made in the Middle East will improve the environmental impact of electric cars even further!

Across the two countries, from government, industry and the public, we found a resounding sense of positivity towards electric vehicles and an awareness of their inevitability in playing a part in the future of our mobility systems.

It was a great experience to be a part of this Global EVRT Middle East 2018 - An amazing initiative to promote the adoption of Electric

mobility. Driving a Tesla for the very first time on the streets of UAE was a great experience personally. Meeting like minded people and

learning about the Electric vehicle trends via the mobility conference was an added advantage.

I would like to thank the entire Global EVRT team and stakeholders for this opportunity! Looking

forward to participating in future events. Keep up the good work!

An experience to remember! I saw impact made at countries and government level from the

conference to the opening of charging stations, and road trip itself!

The group was a vibrant and diverse mix, allowing me to dive into a learning experience about different backgrounds, electric cars, and sustainability initiatives, while discovering both

beautiful host countries the UAE and OMAN. A brilliant initiative to be supported and promoted.

The trip was a once in a lifetime experience to introduce a new way of transportation to people who had never experienced it before. This is my

second EVRT experience after joining for the Emirates EVRT 2017 in which I drove my old EV. Seeing the progress of the latest models I drove

on the road trip was staggering. This future is right now, it is possible, and this is the

only way forward!

It was also eye opening to see so many initiatives happening right here in our cities and towns, like the Eco-Homes built in Sultan Qaboos

University Muscat.

As the sun sets, the road trippers are arriving to the Tilal Liwa Hotel, in Madinat Zayed, the first stop of the EVRT Middle East 2018

Life is a collection of memorable moments, and my experience with Global EVRT has been one of the most amazing of these memorable moments!

Driving electric vehicles across the country was an experience, having said that; understanding the

cars and their purpose in this world to be eco-friendlier was greatly eye-opening. I didn’t

have much information on electric vehicles previously. After embarking on this journey with an incredible group of people, I have not only learned

so much more about the technologies, but also have made some great friendships that will be as

sustainable as the technology!

Nine days and over 1,750 kilometers later, we are back in Dubai, thrilled to have taken part in this year’s Electric Vehicle Road Trip.

Sharing a common mission and passion with the Global EVRT team, we were delighted with the public’s reception of the Chevrolet Bolt EV. From Abu Dhabi to Oman and back to Dubai, over 1,000 people came out to see the convoy, which confirms that the appetite for electric vehicles in the Middle East is at an all-time high.

We at Chevrolet, are committed to playing a major role in the next chapter of the Middle East electrification story. This road trip was the perfect way to give the public a chance to get behind the wheel of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and experience it for the very first time. Over 80 people took the car for a spin – for many their first ever EV experience – and their excitement was overwhelming.

WHAT A JOURNEY! THE CHEVROLET BOLT EV HOLDS ITS OWN ON THIS YEAR’S MIDDLE EAST EVRT.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is a feat of engineering; its worry-free driving range of over 500km is practically unheard of in the segment. It is the culmination of over 100 years of automotive manufacturing expertise as well as a lifelong commitment to design and innovation.

Our electrification plans, of which the Chevrolet Bolt EV serves as a firm foundation, are built on Chevrolet’s innovative spirit and aligns with the Dubai Government’s vision for sustainable and smart mobility.

The EVRT Middle East has established its legacy and we are very proud of our involvement. We will carry this common message forward to accelerate the adoption of Electric Vehicle in this market and beyond.

This was just the beginning of Chevrolet’s own electrification road trip, and we can’t wait to see the first Chevrolet Bolt EVs on the road.

The inaugural Mobility Conference was opened by Michael Liebreich, Founder of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, who set the context for the challenges and opportunities for e-Mobility

- 2010 to present: 75% cost reduction in electric vehicle batteries

- 2018 to 2030: Further 75% cost reduction in electric vehicle batteries

- By 2025: Sticker price will be cheaper for electric vehicles, electric vehicles will be cheaper and better, plus maintenance will be cheaper

In summary: Cost of electric vehicles will decrease and choice and performance will increase

24

The Mobility Conference

Key findings:- “The transition to e-Mobility is inevitable” opening keynote Michael Liebreich emphasised

- Fares Al Mazrooei suggested that there is a potential for expansion on existing UAE policy

- Taher Diab highlighted that the Dubai Government had created the right atmosphere in the GCC

- During the workshop on ‘The Business Case for EV’ the uncertainty around residual values was identified as a core reason that businesses were not yet ready to invest into EV. In addition, there is a lack of understanding around total cost of ownership (TCO) which results in business and consumers not being fully aware of the cost benefits of EV

- EV coupled with Solar PV sees further cost savings, as demonstrated by Aramex, one of the region’s largest logistic companies

- The current business model for investors into charging station infrastructure is unclear and may deter investment

The key message is that the transition to electric vehicles is happening, it’s inevitableMichael Liebreich Founder and former CEO of Bloomberg New Energy Finance

Test Drives & Experiences

Over 250 people in 5 major cities across the UAE and Oman, had test drives in our Chevrolet Bolt EVs and Tesla cars, including key figures from industry and government

A range of people from the public and from the EVRT Middle East, experiencing the Chevrolet Bolt EV, Tesla Model S and Model X, in the UAE and Oman!

These took place at: IHG hotels, RAK Track, SQU University, The Sustainable City Dubai. In our experience, understanding, learning and appreciation of electric vehicles only truly comes once you’ve got behind the wheel! We’ve seen the the spark in people’s eye, the change in their words and ultimately the shift in their mind-set. They realise that electric vehicle technology is not something for the future, it is ready to be adopted today, and it’s a fun, comfortable and truly innovative experience!
