TECHNICAL COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS TECHNICAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS

COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN: Adel El-Emam, Kuwait Oil Company (KOC)Adel El-Emam is a Consultant Geophysicist with Kuwait Oil Company, Exploration Group. He holds a BSc in Geology (1975) from Cairo University (Egypt) and a MSc in Geophysics “Attenuation of Seismic Waves” (1983) from the University of Pittsburgh (USA). Adel has over 40 years of experience with local and international oil companies. He joined KOC in 1995 and is currently responsible for seismic data acquisition and processing. He previously held the position of Data Processing Manager with GPC in Cairo (Egypt). Adel presented and published more than 40 papers at local and international conferences. He was awarded “Best Poster Presented at SEG 2005 Annual Meeting.” He is an active member of SEG, EAGE and SPE. Adel is a technical reviewer for SEG and EAGE and has been the president of the SEG DISC since 2017.

COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRMAN: Said Al-Abri, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO)Said Al-Abri has been a Processing Geophysicist at Petroleum Development Oman since 2010. He worked as Operation Geophysicist for 7 years. He obtained a BSc in 2002 and a MSc in Physics of the Earth and Atmosphere from Leeds University (UK) in 2003. He worked on Full Waveform Inversion, velocity model building and 3DVSP processing.

Frederico Xavier de Melo, WesternGeco/SchlumbergerFrederico Xavier de Melo is a Product Champion – Seismic Multiple Processing for WesternGeco/Schlumberger, and holds an Eng and MSc degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Brasília (Brazil). He initially worked as Electronic Engineer for the Seismological Observatory in Brasília, maintaining and developing applications for global and deep seismology studies. After obtaining his MSc degree, he joined WesternGeco/Schlumberger as a Data Processing Seismic Engineer in Kuwait, followed by a Testing Geophysicist role in Houston, before his current position. He has worldwide experience in multiple geological challenges and environments. His main interests are signal and multiple processing, pattern recognition, stochastic filtering and optimization.

Guillaume Cambois, ADNOCGuillaume Cambois graduated from École Polytechnique de Paris (France) and received a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Texas at Austin (USA). He started his career with CGG, holding various positions in R&D and data processing, eventually reaching the position of Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President Data Processing. He joined PGS in 2007, initially spearheading GeoStreamer technology deployment and eventually becoming PGS Executive Vice President for Imaging and Engineering. He is currently Principal Geophysicist with ADNOC. He was SEG Vice President as part of the 2007-2008 Executive Committee and served as SEG Director at Large from 2013 to 2016.

Halis Bayri, Kuwait Oil Company (KOC)Halis Bayri is a Senior Consultant Geophysicist at Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), supervising in-house seismic data processing as well as a number of outsourced projects. He received a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook (USA) in 1987. Following his graduation, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Hacettepe University in Ankara (Turkey) as an Assistant Professor. In 1991, he joined the Oil industry with Western Geophysical. He has over 28 years of experience in Seismic Data Processing. His main interests are in signal processing and multiple attenuation.

Khaled Dulaijan, Saudi AramcoKhaled Dulaijan is an experienced geophysicist with a demonstrated history of working in Saudi Aramco for more than 15 years. He has a BSc from the University of Tulsa (USA), MSc and PhD from the University of Calgary (Canada). Currently, he is the 3D near-surface team leader. He is interested and has published in seismic anisotropy, borehole seismic, near surface, seismic imaging and velocity model building. He has participated in international conferences and workshops in technical committees and co-chairing sessions.

Muneera Al-Awadhi, Kuwait Oil Company (KOC)Muneera Al-Awadhi graduated from Kuwait University with a BSc in geology in 2011. She has seven years of experience in the oil and gas industry, starting her career with Kuwait Oil Company in 2012 as a geophysicist. In 2017, she got a MSc in Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience from Kuwait University, as well as a MSc in Geophysics from IFP School (France) in 2018. She has been working with the Seismic Reservoir Characterization unit in exploration focusing mainly on rock physics, deterministic and stochastic seismic inversion. She recently got involved in borehole seismic processing starting from basic full waveform sonic processing to VSP processing.

Myrna Staring, Delft University of TechnologyMyrna Staring is a 4th year PhD student in Applied Geophysics at Delft University of Technology (Netherlands). Her PhD project is to evaluate the advantages and limitations of the application of Marchenko equation-based methods on field data. As part of her PhD, she has worked as an R&D intern with CGG in Brazil, as a visiting researcher with CGG Netherlands and as a visiting researcher with Aramco Overseas Company Netherlands. She is currently founding an EAGE Women in Geoscience and Engineering committee in the Netherlands, in addition to being part of a think-and-do tank with young researchers and NGO’s.

Pierre Hugonnet, CGGPierre Hugonnet currently holds the position of Senior Research Advisor at CGG Seismic Imaging. He completed his PhD in Geophysics in 1998 from the University of Pau (France). Since then, he has always been with CGG in seismic processing R&D (first at the Massy center, then at the Pau dedicated center). His main topics of interest are signal processing, multiple attenuation, noise attenuation and deblending.

Rodney Johnston, BPRodney Johnston is global R&D Portfolio Manager for BP’s Upstream Technology involving data acquisition, imaging and inversion. He has broad interests from source control and deconvolution to multi-component and wide-azimuth seismic for field development onshore/offshore, and led trans-Atlantic research projects including Passive Seismic, Elastic Imaging, and Full-wavefield Reservoir Characterization applied to conventional and unconventional reservoirs. He has a MSc degree from the French Petroleum Institute – ENSPM (France) and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh (UK). He is an active member of SEG, EAGE, PESGB, GSH and CSEG, has received multiple awards from SEG and PESGB, oganises SEG’s Distinguished and Honorary Lecture events, and is a member of SEG’s Europe Regional Advisory Committee.

Tariq Al Khalifah, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)Tariq Alkhalifah is a professor in the Physical Sciences and Engineering Division. Before he joined KAUST in June 2009, he was research professor and director of the Oil and Gas Research Institute at King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST). From 1996 to 1998, he served as a postdoctoral researcher for the Stanford Exploration Project at Stanford University (USA). Member of SEG and EAGE, he received the J. Clarence Karcher Award from SEG and the Conrad Schlumberger Award from EAGE in 2003, and was honorary lecturer for the SEG in 2011. He received his PhD and MSc in geophysics, both from the Colorado School of Mines (USA). He holds a BSc in geophysics from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KSA).

Yang Yong, BGPYang Yong is a Senior Geophysicist who has worked at BGP for 20 years. He obtained a BSc in petroleum from the University of China in 1999 and a MSc from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2015. He is currently in charge of seismic data processing & interpretation business for BGP in Kuwait.

OPENING SPEAKER: Adel El-Emam, Kuwait Oil Company (KOC)Adel El-Emam is a Consultant Geophysicist with Kuwait Oil Company, Exploration Group. Antonio Pica, CGGAntonio Pica completed his PhD in 1988 in Non-Linear Waveform Inversion of Seismic Data (with Prof. A. Tarantola). Since 1985, he has been working in R&D with CGG/CGGVeritas. He has worked in inversion, signal processing, modeling and imaging in general as Research Director.

Arthur B. Weglein, University of HoustonArthur B. Weglein holds the Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Cullen Distinguished University Chair in Physics at the University of Houston (USA). He is the founding director of the Mission-Oriented Seismic Research Program (M-OSRP). Arthur was the SEG Distinguished Lecturer in 2003 and received the Townsend Harris Medal from CCNY in 2008. He also received SEG’s Reginald Fessenden Medal in 2010, for his contributions to exploration seismology. In 2016, he was awarded SEG’s highest honor and recognition, the Maurice Ewing Medal. He co-authored a graduate textbook for Cambridge University Press with Bob Stolt in 2012, and in January 2018 was selected to be Co-Editor-in-Chief (along with Nafi Toksoz of MIT) of the Journal of Seismic Exploration.

Benxi Ke, BGPBenxi Ke is a senior expert at R&D center, BGP. He holds a BSc degree in applied mathematics, a MSc degree in applied geophysics and a PhD degree in solid geophysics. He was a visiting scholar at SEP, Stanford university (USA), in 2009. He has over 30 years of experience in R&D on seismic data processing, including seismic modeling, seismic migration, seismic inversion and multiple elimination.

Clement Kostov, SchlumbergerClement Kostov is currently Research Scientist with Schlumberger Cambridge Research in Cambridge (UK). His research interest in seismic multiples started during his PhD studies at Stanford University (USA) in the late 1980’s and continued through several assignments with Schlumberger since 1990. Clement has had the opportunity and privilege to work with and learn from many of the leading experts on the topic of multiples in academia and in industry. He is member of the SEG, EAGE and GSH professional societies and is currently Associate Editor for the scientific journal Geophysical Prospecting.

Dan Whitmore, PGSDan Whitmore has 45 years of experience in seismic imaging, modeling, processing, velocity estimation and tomography. He researched methods in reverse time migration, plane wave migration, multi-component migration, and imaging of multiples. He was a researcher and advisor at Amoco, Conoco Phillips and Petroleum Geo-Services. He has decorate in Geophysics. He pioneered the development of reverse time migration and received the 2011 SEG Reginald Fessenden Award. He was a 2015 SEG Honorary Lecturer on concepts and applications for the imaging of multiples and primaries. He joined Petroleum Geo-Services in 2009 and was Geophysical Advisor in the Depth Imaging Department. He supported technologies in 3D RTM, seismic wavefield inversion and imaging of primaries and multiples. He retired in 2019 and is presently a consultant and advisor to PGS.

Dirk (Eric) Verschuur, Delft University of TechnologyDirk (Eric) Verschuur received his MSc degree in 1986 and his PhD degree (honors) in 1991 from the Delft University of Technology (Netherlands), both in applied physics. From 1992 to 1997, he worked under a senior research fellowship from the Royal Dutch Academy of Art and Sciences (KNAW). He became assistant professor in 1997 and an associate professor at the DUT in 1999 at the laboratory of Acoustical Wavefield Imaging. He is currently Director of the Delphi research consortium at DUT. His main interests are seismic modeling, processing, imaging sand inversion techniques. He received SEG’s J. Clarence Karcher award in 1997 and SEG’s Virgil Kauffman Gold Medal in 2006. He is a member of SEG and EAGE.

Fons ten Kroode, Shell Global Solutions InternationalFons ten Kroode joined Shell Research as a Mathematical Physicist in 1991 and has been working there in various roles, among which head of Shell’s Seismic Imaging R&D program. Over the years, he has worked on a variety of R&D projects, including multiple attenuation, velocity estimation by Full Waveform Inversion and Wave Path Tomography and least squares imaging. He is currently leading an Acquisition and Signal Processing R&D team. One of his current interests is to develop signal processing techniques which are firmly based on inverse problem theory as encountered in model building and imaging.

Gerard Schuster, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)Gerard Schuster has an MS (1982) and a PhD (1984) from Columbia University (USA), where he was a postdoctoral researcher in 1984-1985. From 1985 to 2009, he was a professor of Geophysics at University of Utah (USA). He started his current position as Professor of Geophysics at King Abdullah University Science and Technology (KAUST) in 2009 and is also the co-director and founder of the Center for Fluid Modeling and Seismic Imaging at KAUST. He received a number of teaching and research awards while at University of Utah. He was editor of Geophysics in 2004-2005 and was awarded SEG’s Virgil Kauffman gold medal in 2010 for his work in seismic interferometry. He helped pioneer seismic interferometry and its practical applications in applied geophysics, through his active research program and through his extensive publications. SEG published Schuster’s book “Seismic Inversion” in 2017, and his next book “Practical Machine Learning Methods in Geosciences” will be published in 2020.
