INTRODUcTION

What’s the best thing about being in the Scouts? Maybe it’s trying out new things, learning new skills, or it could just be that it’s good fun.

For many, the best thing about Scouting is the trips. Camping in the UK or overseas is one of the key highlights but days out to places like the zoo, theme parks or a farm are valuable everyday activities.

Getting everything prepared for these trips takes careful planning. Involving your Scouts can mean they will get more from the whole experience. Budgeting for trips is an important planning stage.

MAkE MONEY MAkE SENSERBS run MoneySense, a programme that has helped more than two million British young people to develop money management skills. All materials are impartial and do not promote RBS products or services. Find out more at www.rbs.co.uk/moneysense

The Scout Association has teamed up with RBS MoneySense to produce this resource for Scouts to help them learn how to budget.

It will help you deliver a balanced programme of activities. There is also a Scout activity pack which should be provided to each Scout as further support. The activities in the pack relate to those outlined here, but parts of them can also be done at home.

These resources should help give them confidence in themselves and their own ideas, and, of course, be great fun.

This activity pack will help Scouts learn more about: • How to budget for camp• Budgeting for an overseas trip • How much things cost

It’s part of a series of five RBS-sponsored activity packs covering a number of money management skills in simple ways that you can include in your programme:

• Money and your life• Staying on budget• Bringing the fun into fundraising• Running your own event• Running your own business

AcTIVITY: WhAT DO YOU NEED fOR cAMp?This activity will help Scouts plan what they need and how much it will cost, helping to develop their budgeting skills for camp and other events.

hOW TO DO ThE AcTIVITY1. Split the Scouts into teams of four (5 minutes).

2. Ask the teams to work together to choose what equipment and things they need to take with them to their next Scout camping trip. They can write their list down on the space in the Running Your Own Event: activity pack (20 minutes).

3. Now ask them to think about how much everything they have written down will cost and write the price next to the item (15 minutes).

4. There is a budget of £100 for the whole group. Each team must decide what you can afford to take with you. Remind them to check your Scout Group stores to see what can be borrowed (15 minutes).

5. Each team presents their list to the rest of the Troop, explaining how their list changed when they received the budget. How did they decide to save money? (30 minutes).

6. Hold a discussion in your Troop about the decisions they made to ensure they stayed in budget. Was there anything they decided the Troop couldn’t afford? How did they choose between items?

Budgeting to me means that you decide exactly what you’re going to spend your money on and try to keep to that so you don’t go overspend.

James, 12, Birmingham

What you need:

• Pen and paper• Teams of about four people• Access to the internet if possible (for researching

prices) or give them a catalogue from a camping/department store

• Access to your Group’s stores equipment

How long: About one hour and 25 minutes.

The World Scout Jamboree involves nearly 40,000 young people and adults from over 150 countries. For those lucky enough to take part, it’s the experience of a lifetime.

Young people attending the event are usually selected from their Counties, Districts, Area and Regions more than 18 months in advance. So there’s plenty of time to get excited and to raise funds so everyone can get the most out of the adventure.

It can be expensive to go a Jamboree, so budgeting is very important. Scouts need to pay for everything from transport to treats. Even if they’re not going to the Jamboree, learning budgeting skills will help them pay for another overseas Scout trip or a holiday.

hOW TO DO ThE AcTIVITYAsk the Scouts to look at the scenario in the Running your own event: activity pack and answer the related questions. This part of the activity can be done at home in their own time or as part of a meeting.

Once the Scouts have answered all the questions:

1. Ask them to choose a partner and together

• Discuss whether they think they can each afford to take the trip, based on their individual calculations.

• Talk about which of the items they would spend money on that they think are absolutely essential.

• Discuss how they could save more each month.

• Make a list of some ways they and their whole Scout Troop could help raise money together to pay for everyone to be able to go on the overseas trip. (25 minutes)

2. Now ask them to feedback their ideas to the rest of the Troop (20 minutes).

AcTIVITY: BUDGETING fOR AN OVERSEAS TRIp It’s easy to feel a bit overwhelmed when trying to figure out how to pay for an overseas trip. This activity will help Scouts break down the stages of budgeting to make it much more achievable.

What you need:

• Pen • Print out of the questions below• Paper • A partner

How long: About 45 minutes.

I’d probably speak to my parents and I’d look at how much money I’ve got in my account and then decide whether it was a good idea to do it.

AcTIVITY: ThE pRIcE IS RIGhTThis activity will help Scouts work out how much things cost and get them thinking about how we value money.

What you need:

• Pen and paper

Two everyday items such as:• Chocolate bar • Pair of socks • Tin of baked beans • Can of fizzy drink• Tent peg • Torch • Wrist watch • Camera • Smoke alarm

How long: About one hour

hOW TO DO ThE AcTIVITY 1. Get the Scouts to bring in two everyday items to your Scout meeting. Ask them to find out how much they cost to buy and write it down in the space provided in their Running Your Own Event activity pack (5 minutes).

2. Invite everyone who has bought items to show them to the rest of the Troop in turn. When the items are shown, ask them to write how much they think they cost in the space provided in their Running Your Own Event activity pack (10 minutes).

3. When everyone has written down their guess, everyone can reveal how much the items they brought in really cost (10 minutes).

4. Scouts get two points for guessing the exact amount or one point for being the closest. If they guess more than the amount, they go bust which means they’re out of the game and have to sit down. The person with the most points will win a prize for being a brilliant budgeter (5 minutes).

5. Cut out and hold up each of the six cards below one by one. Ask the Scout to estimate how much these things cost? If they can't, ask them why not. Encourage them to discuss their ideas among the Troop (30 minutes).

I tend to think “Well, can I really afford this?” I think twice before I buy a product and if I’m not sure, I go home and decide and then come back and buy it – or not buy it.’
