Safety First - —— I drive my tumbril east and west, as stately as a wedding guest, and in my wide and bulging breast I hold the love of man; if I treat others, I decree, politely, as my weird I dree, then others will play fair with me, and will not wreck Tny van. So with the grace of Chesterfield I drive my, wagon, yellow-wheeled, and I am always prompt to yield when arguments arise; 1 won’t dis- pute the right of way or argue rules with any jay; "You’re doubtless right, drive on,” 1 say, serene, un- ruffled, wise. If all the drivers were polite when traveling by day or night we’d seldom sec a mangled wight stretched out upon the grass; but many delegates forget that courtesy’s the noblest bet when once they grab the wheel and set their feet upon the gas. They’re always prone to take a chance, like streaks of lightning they advance, although there is no circumstance that calls for frantic speed; along the dusty road they rack; let other fellows clear the track—and then a hearse severe and black bears off the forms that bleed. And oftentimes the speeding skate, the frenzied, deadly delegate, has manners truly fine and great, when from the gas afar; when he’s afoot he’s kind a~nd mild, he would not injure man or child", he only shows’us conduct wild when he is in a car. "Washington every year punishesindustry by a fine or tax amounting jto about $7.561.000.” said Mr. Brown, j“and then to add to the sum of its fol- Ilies, it gives the landowners as a re- jward for idleness, in the form of landvalues, public property to the extent ofabout $16,000,009. This enormous pre- !mium on idleness results in boostingland values beyond the ability of la- ,bor and capital to pay the tribute.

I Washington requires about $24,729.-( TBR this year for all purposes. Your; land area is 44,320 acres, and allowing

    | for streets there are therefore about ,j 531.840 lots 25x100. An average tax

; of SSO per lot would yield $26,592,000. jj And this without taking one cent of iprivate property, nor adding one centto the cost of living."
