So here is the scoop...for a very simple 12" Shoo Fly Block made up of (5) 4 1/2" squares and (4) 4 1/2" HST you will need to run your block through the sewing machine 12 TIMES which includes making the HST!! So then I wondered about the amount of thread and found that it took over 2 yards of thread!! The block that I was making for the quilt had to be run through my machine 28 times and I don't even want to think about the thread! I began quilting about 6 years ago. My husband bought me a sewing machine for Christmas one year. That first year I sort of hacked around and watched Simply Quilts on HGTV and tried to replicate what I saw. The next year for Christmas I asked for an ' Intro to Quilt Making' class, and well the rest is his-tory. I have always loved quilts. As a young girl I was given a patchwork tied quilt. I could just feel the

love radiate through that thing!! I have always been creative, and have tried many different types of creative projects. As a young girl I made loom pot holders, rug hooking, drawing, and coloring. As an adult I have tried watercolor painting, scrapbooking, chalk drawing and card making. I guess I love quilting the most because it is multidimensional, and it will always present a challenge. I can piece blocks, appliqué, either by hand or machine, or make an art quilt. Art quilts are what pulls at my heart the most and I love the free form an art quilt lends.

My family and I play tennis. We love to play individually or all together. Often we can be found playing a board game or a game of 'horse' on the basketball court.

Sew What Happened Last Month….?

My goodness, the summer is half over!! Where has it gone? It was nice to get together with the Evening Star guild mem-bers on 7/14/14. We met a week early because there was so much going on with the Quilters Hall of Fame weekend and our guest speaker was able to come that day.

Sherry thanked all of the volunteers (the food was great!) and welcomed out 42 members and 7 guests. She had sad news for us-longtime members and friends Dora Utley and Shirley Lashbrook had recently passed away.

The July newsletter (thank you Ann Fisher) had a list of the QHF classes and the upcoming One Stop Shop Hop in Kokomo and the Quilts in the Park event in Pendleton. Treasurer Cindy Garretson was not able to attend but Sherry re-ported that we have money in the account. J

Stephanie Crabtree announced that we still need December volunteers-1 for the sign in table, 2 Vanna Girls and 3 host-esses. Queen Connie shouldn’t have to handle this alone.

Sherry highlighted the QHF activities planned for July 17-19. Donna Hartman reminded us of the workshop the next day (July 15, 2014) with Ebony Love at the McElfresh Estate. There are still openings for the workshop, $25 each. We will be testing a new pattern by Ebony.

Stephanie Crabtree announced that the Saturday, September 13, 2014 workshop would be at the McElfresh Estate and we would be making cancer quilts for the Community Hospital Cancer Center. The goal is to have 12 lap quilts donated. There are 3 quilt patterns we will be using (and maybe a few variations). Some of the quilts will be in various stages-ready to layer, ready to quilt and ready to bind. Some of the blocks will be started and a bolt of Kona Snow will be available to make the quilts. We will be using Layer Cakes and Jelly Rolls (sounds like dessert to me!). There is no cost and everyone will bring their own lunch.

Show and Tell was fun and creative with 17 members sharing their work. Edna Brown won the Show and Tell drawing and Jan Kirby won the Sign in drawing.

Our program for the evening was Ebony Love of Love Bug Studios-author, quilter, longarmer and Die Cut expert! And she has a full time job not related to her crafts!!! She gave us a GoBaby demonstration and answered common questions about using die cuts. It was very informative! She showed us a number of her quilts that were made using die cuts and showed her style of backings for her quilts. She uses all of the fabric on the front and the back-neat look.

It was a great meeting! The next one will be at the regular 3rd Monday of the month, August 18, 2014. Hope you can make it!

Respectfully submitted, Rita Shively for Stephanie Crabtree, Secretary

Ebony’s Workshop at the McElfresh

Estate

by Ann Shaffer

8 quilters attended the workshop. Ebony showed

how to square up the finished quilt by matching

seams (the normal way) and squaring up uneven,

by not matching seams, but the

blocks matched. Matching up uneven seemed to

be the favorite.

One quilter used a holiday theme for her quilt,

while another chose to use fabric from her stash,

2 other quilters chose to exchange blocks.

One quilter was so excited about the workshop,

she forgot something, had to go back home,

and then a County Deputy got her when she was

almost to the McElfresh Estate, making her even

later, but she was ok and very excited about the

workshop.

Show and Tell should be interesting.

Our leader of the pack brought donuts & rolls,

“Desserts for a Cause” at the McElfresh Estate

by Stephanie Crabtree

Cakes, jelly rolls, turnovers, charms (maybe we could

rename them Cupcakes to go with the theme).

Sounds yummy, doesn’t it? We will have these on

Saturday, 9/13/14 as we put together lap quilts for

the Community Hospital Cancer Center. We have 3

quilt patterns that use layer cakes, jelly rolls and

turnovers (half square triangles). We will have one

quilt ready to bind, one ready to quilt and then the

fabric to cut and ready to piece. The disappearing

hourglass takes a few more steps so we will have

some of the squares ready to cut. Something for

everyone! Our goal is to donate 12 quilts later this

fall. We will bring batting, thread, backing fabric

and Kona Snow fabric. If you would like to bring a

jelly roll or layer cake, feel free!! If you want to

participate but can’t attend, you can donate material

for the workshop or a quilt. Hopefully when the

tops are done, we will have some volunteers to quilt

them up and others to do the binding.

The workshop is free. Bring a sack lunch and a des-

sert will be provided. These quilts will be for men

and women. The quilts need to be large enough to

cover the patients while undergoing their treat-

ments. The samples are 64” x 64”, 65” x 65”, and

48” x 60” before a border.

This will be a fun time to sew, chat, eat and quilt, all

for a good cause. We hope you can come. Let Ann

Shaffer know if you will be coming.

We want to send our condolences to the friends and family of members Dora Utley, Shirley Lashbrook, and Gykala Jones. Dora and Shirley were charter members of the Evening Star

Quilt Guild. We will miss them all!

Thank you I want to take this opportunity on behalf of the Quilters Hall

of Fame and the Celebration Committee to thank all of you

for coming to enjoy Celebration weekend. Also thanks to

those members of the Indiana State Guild who volunteered

as White Glove ladies. It was so enjoyable to have you

there. To those of you who took classes and lectures, we

hope you enjoyed those and were able to learn something

new! The exhibits were incredible and our Honoree, Ruth

B. McDowell, has allowed her quilts to be hung at the Marie

Webster House until the end of September. Please don't

miss the opportunity of visiting this amazing exhibit. Again,

thank to all of you! Sherry McConnell Vice President, Board of Directors, Quilters Hall of Fame Exhibits Chairman, Marie Webster
