Codes and conventions of a Scripted Reality Tv Show...

Definition of a scripted reality show - A scripted reality show is made by everyday people (not professional actors), based on everyday life but exaggerated and made more dramatic to create humorous situations and to entertain the audience.

Media languages –

M.E.S – costume - In all scripted reality shows the costume represents the social class and their identity and background.M.E.S – Make up - In scripted reality shows all the characters wear makeup to enhance their looks and status. Fake tan is a common product used in most scripted reality tv shows.M.E.S – Props - Props are used in scripted reality shows to exaggerate the roles of the characters and add to their personality, such as expensive bags, phones, dogs and cars. M.E.S – Roles - In Towie like most scripted realities there are; bimbo (Amy Childs), player (Mark Wright), on off couple (Arg and Gemma), bitch (Lauren Goodger), two-some (Billie and Cara) . These roles are common in scripted realities because it adds humorous situations and creates a good story line and helps the audience escape from their everyday life. M.E.S – Setting - Settings in scripted realities allow a catalyst to spark off the stereotypes within the program. The setting also states their social class and status.

Lighting – The lighting in scripted realities sets the mood of the program, for example – if the mood was miserable the lighting would be dark and grey, where as if the scene was a happy scene, the lighting would show this through using bright lights to create a warm feeling.

Sound – In scripted realities there is always an opening theme tune which helps to set the mood and makes the audience familiar with the program, this is non diegetic sound. The diegetic sounds isn't always scripted, as the characters don't have a script but have a role to play.

Camera – The camera shots used in scripted reality tv shows are mainly‘close ups’ – to show the make up and glamour of the characters.‘wide shots’ – to show the different social groups and the separation of them. ‘long shots’ – to show the setting and scene to reveal the social class of the characters.‘two shots’ – to show the tension in arguments on the program.

‘guilty pleasure’

Firstly, I mimicked the back ground and masthead of the ‘Olly Murs’ Magazine front cover. However, I then went on to change my background as I noticed that with the black and white star image, a white background made it stand out more. I then changed the colour of the text to red, as I thought this linked in with the storyline and links with romance, lust and sex. Which makes the star more appealing to the audience too.

How did I CHALLENGE codes and conventions of media products?

We based our trailer on the reality Tv show ‘Made In Chelsea’. However, we have challenged the codes and conventions of this particular reality show by using the reality Tv show ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ as a plan for our billboard. We had to change the billboard plan as we could not get the right setting or costume to mimic the ‘Made In Chelsea’ one, therefore making it easier to use the green screens to mimic the ‘The Only Way Is Essex’.

Billboard Only Way Is Essex

Made In Chelsea

‘The Only Way Is Essex’ is also a reality tv show, we have used the same layout and colour scheme as their billboard because the ‘Made In Chelsea’ billboard includes long, upper class dress’ and a big hall for the setting, which we can not get access to, therefore making it easier to use the green screen to mimic the ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ billboard.

In the ‘Made In Chelsea’ billboard the atmosphere is more formal and shows their upper class background. We could not imitate this as we could not access the location.

On our own billboard we have used the boxes to feature the characters as telling the story, the main character ‘ste’ is featured in the middle, with all the other characters looking at him, implying the storyline is mainly about him. We have featured him with a confident expression on his face to also link with the storyline of him playing all the girls.
