Evaluation of ethicalness of having designer baby with three philosophical approaches.

The basic question that interests philosophers is: What makes a decision or action or person more or less good or ethical? Each of the three philosophical approaches to ethical decision making- consequentialism, deontology, and ethical relativism- focuses on a different conception of a right action. Each of the three approaches contributes differently for ethical decision making in business personal life in this case the newlywed’s couple interest on PGD.

a) Consequentialism, Utilitarianism or Teleology;

It holds that an act is morally right if that an act maximizes the net good. AACSB said that..

“..decision that produces the greatest good for the greatest number.”

Relating to this matter PGD gives injustices to the disabled people. Millions of people who are currently affected with these disorders are living happy and reproductive lives. The disability discrimination claim maintains that prenatal screening for disabilities results in discrimination against those by reducing the numbers of people affected as if they are not worth living at all.

Besides, it is said by our former Health minister that designer baby is unethical as the example of the population ratio are 105 males to 100 females but if people were allowed to choose gender of their babies an imbalance could be created as in China and some parts of India.

b) Deontology;

It focuses on the obligation or duties motivating a decision or actions rather than on the consequences of the action. Immanuel Kant argued that a rational person making a decision about what would be good to do, would consider what action would be good for all members of society to do. She is planning to do so for the fact of her interest on brands or following trends; brand-crazy which is obviously unethical. She does not realize how her action motivated other people on following her footstep. Soon it the use of PGD will be difficult to control that it will be sought by parents for less and less severe medical conditions as time goes by. Even the couple belongs to that group of people.

c) Virtue Ethics or Ethical Relativism;

Virtues are those characters traits that dispose a person to act ethically and thereby make that person a morally good human being. There was once brought to House Of Lord saying that “I am neither a doctor nor a scientist, but I believe that to refuse to help those who might be helped is contrary to both religion and humanity”. As for families with fertility problem the question on ethicalness is not crucial as the illness suffered must be credibly stressing for both parents and child.
