Evaluation question 6What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product.
By Ciaran, Harry, Jack, Jake
List of Technologies we used:
Technology 1 from Research and planning - Blogger
The first technology I used in research and planning was blogger. This was completely new to me as i didn’t know anything about using a blog. I felt this was useful as it was very easy to organise and we could keep track on what
needs to be done.
Once on blogger, you need to click new post in the top right and it will open a blank post. From here you can change the title, and all the text settings. You
are also able to insert images, videos and sound.
If you click on the HTML tab in the top left, you can type/paste HTML code. This allows you to embed presentations using the embedding code from different websites for example prezi, youtube and slideshare. Once you have finished,
you can label who did the work with the labels tab, and then you could publish it with the orange button in the top right corner, “Publish”. This will then post it on
your blog and make it viewable for the readers.
Technology 2 from Research and planning - Slideshare
To embed keynote and powerpoint presentations onto Blogger, we used a website called Slideshare. This was helpful as it meant we were able to use
keynote and powerpoint for some assignments, which allowed us to communicate in different ways.
To upload the presentations, we first had to save/export them in the format of a powerpoint. Once we did this we opened slideshare, clicked on upload in the top right and then it opened the webpage on the left. We then clicked the big
orange “upload” button in the middle and chose the .ppt file we wanted to upload. This meant we were able to embed the presentation from Slideshare
onto our blog.
For editing we used a software called Final Cut Pro to edit our clips. During this process, I learnt how to fade using anchor points, create effects on text and
colour correct in Final Cut. In our first two drafts, we used a Point of view shots, in between we had it fading to black showing the character was losing
consciousness.
We used the anchor point tool over the fade effect as we felt it was a lot easier to control because with the fade transition, we can only control the duration, however with anchor points we can control how quickly it happens, how long the fade is and if it goes to black or not. We used this in our final draft when
Jack was turning into a zombie. This helped as we could stop it at roughly half opacity and then layer the clip over the other clip to create a disorientated
atmosphere. This was useful as all the
Technology from Construction Anchor points and pen tool
In the top right we can see the canvas with an image faded to black. This is because the anchor points
control the opacity
To add anchor points you have to click on the Toggle overlays button in the bottom left of the timeline, then
you have to select the pen tool on the far right and you can add anchor points on the line to control the
opacity of the clip.
base clips were100% opacity and we put a few clips over with a lower opacity (50%) so the audience would be confused to what was going on. The anchor point was used when the upper clip went over to a point with no base clip as we could move it back to 100%
opacity.
Technology from Construction “Boris” text
In our first two drafts, we felt the text look a bit too plain and therefore we wanted to add an effect to it. Although none of our examples have a flickery
text, we felt it would show good editing skills and set the tone early on.
To create this flicker effect, I first set the main clip the was centered so that after the flicker, the text would always return to the same spot. Then
Depending on the length of the clip I would select a number of points where the clip would flicker and then Use the razor tool to cut the clip into sections. After i
had cut the clip into a few frames after i had selected the points of flicker. I went through each frame in the sections and changed the size and position of
each so that when i played it through the clip would change. This was beneficial to use as it was the first part of the film the audience would see and the flicker would create and uneasy tone especially when juxtaposed with the clip of the 3 boys happily in the car as it would show they have a false sense of security. We used the “Boris” text style as it allowed us to change the size of each individual character in our text box rater than changing all the text. This gave it a more
professional look as our research on film billing shows that “Presents” is usually smaller.
The final editing technique i will be talking about is using colour correction to set a tone. In the first two drafts, i used “Color” to colour correct our film. However on the final draft, i couldn’t get our clips to go back to final cut in the correct order. This lead me to using the colour correction effect in Final Cut Pro. To use colour
correction in Final cut, you have to go to effects, Video effects, Colour correction and then choose 3 way colour correction.
This brings up 3 colour wheels (Blacks, Mids and Whites) where you can customise the tint on these colours. On the far right you can see the colour
change we used as I felt it created a warmer tone to show their false sence of security however also created a darker undertone as the colours aren't as bright
and the yellowy brown tint gives it a dirty abandoned effect seen in lots of zombie horrors. After we had done one we could copy the filter over onto the rest of the
clips. Then after Jack turns into a zombie, we stop using the filter to make a colder tone to show that something bad had just happened.
Technology from Construction Colour correction
We used powtoon for our evaluation question 3. This was useful as it allowed us to present our evaluation in a different way. It was also very easy to use as it was similar
to powerpoint and keynote however it was easier to add and control animations.
To start a presentation, you would click the blue “Create” button that is in the middle of the screen towards the top. This would open a window with lots of templates that
you could chose for a quick headstart. Once you chose your template it would open to the page on the left, with your chosen template in the white box in the middle of the
screen. On the right hand side, there were lots of things you could add to the presentation (pictures, text, shapes and animated pictures). To edit the text you chose,
you had to click the small icon next to your text box (top right). this would open the window seen in the (bottom right) where you can change the text size, colour font and

animation. There is also a box to preview your text before you apply the changes. Once you have finished editing your text you
can change the time it is shown on screen by dragging it longer/shorter in the timeline. If you want you slide to stay
longer, you can click the + in the corner to add more time. To save the presentation you can click the save icon in the corner.
1 research and PlanningPhotopeach is a software that we used used to help create presentations.
These presentations were off the pictures and videos that were taken from the preliminary task up to the production task.
As a result of using this technology I was able to upload the two presentations
straight to the blogs. The software was easy to use and didn't take much time for
us to adapt to it.
The software allowed me to put pictures together in a sequence with a piece of music playing in the background. The
creation process was quick as the files can be uploaded straight from files and then
they are automatically put into a sequence. I was then able to adjust the
pictures sizes and how long they were on screen for.
2 Research and PlanningAnother use of a technology that we used as a group used was YouTube.
YouTube allowed us to upload our Preliminary task along with our Final Draft.
The picture above shows part of the process of how we uploaded our videos. I was able to select
whether it was public, private or unlisted. The files were easily
accessible The picture on the right, shows our homepage on youtube. At the top the bar will take us to various sections of it. We learnt valuable skills throughout this
process. They can all be applied to further projects in the future.
1technology for Construction
Garage band was used in the construction of our Music. We experimented using various tools and effects to help connote a tense atmosphere. This technology was used for every draft that we completed.
The box on the left was the starting point for the creation of the music. As you can see, there are various genres that we were able to choose from. We found this very helpful as we were able to mix more than one together with another.
I found that the most useful ones were Dark, Processed and Distorted.
Also, the image on the left, shows how I was able to view the creation. After looking back on our Final
draft, we found that parts of the voice in the sequence were not clear. Therefore, we decided to use the
record button on Garage Band.
We found that this was very helpful as it improved our draft at that certain point.
2 Technology for Construction
The next technology that we used to help with construction was purple planet. This website gave as another option into our choice of music. At the end of it
we decided to use piece of music which was from this website.
The selection bar on the left, was the starting point for the selection process. I found this very helpful as it gave me many options to chose
from. Each genre has a range of examples to chose from.
After selecting the Horror genre, various example appeared which we were able to chose from. Also, I was
able to download them by clicking the download button. This would then let
us export them onto the editing software which we were using
This whole process was not time consuming and was easy to do.
1 technology for Evaluation
Another technology that we used was Emaze. This was used for evaluation question 2. This is an online presentation software that allows us to create
innovative and interactive presentations. This was the editing homepage for the
software. As you can see there are plenty of effects that we were able to
use.
The first tool which I used was the Text tool. This allowed us to change the
size and style of the text that we used.
The second tool which I used was the shape tool. This allowed us to drag
simple picture designs onto the slides. This was good as it enabled us to show
some creation skills.
Looking back on the software I feel that it was incredibly helpful
and fun, while making the presentation. This will now give me an alternative to Keynote.
The next technology that we used to help with construction was Incompetech. This website gave as another option into our choice of music. At the end of it we decided to use piece of music from this particular website. The song was called ‘Ready Aim Fire.’
2 TECHNOLOGY FOR CONSTRUCTION - INCOMPETECH
The selection bar on the left, was the starting point for the selection process. I found this very helpful as it gave me many options to chose from. Each genre has a range of examples to chose from. After selecting the Horror genre, various example appeared which we were able to chose from. Also, I was able to download them by clicking the download button. This would then let us export them onto the editing software which we were using.
This whole process was not time consuming and was easy to do.
2 Technologies from Construction
The first technology I used in research and planning was the Canon 600D with a 18-55mm lens. This was a piece of equipment I knew very well as I did know everything about using a DSLR. To me this was one of the most important pieces of technology we used as the quality of the film wouldn’t of been as good without it.
To be able to record on the camera, you need to change the mode to ‘Film.’ Then to start recording, you press the camera symbol. After you have pressed this button, a red flashing LED will appear on the display screen so you know that you are recording. To stop recording, you press the camera symbol again. You will know when you’ve stopped recording as the red LED will stop flashing. To review what you have recored, you
press the ‘Preview’ button. You then use the arrows to select which clip or photo you would like to view.
Another technology that we used was Slides. This was used for evaluation question 1. This is an online presentation software that allows us to create innovative and interactive presentations.
1 TECHNOLOGY FOR EVALUATION - SLIDES
This was the editing homepage for the software ‘Slides’. As you can see there aren’t many effects that we were able to use. This made the presentation look plain and simple.
The first tool which I used was the Text tool. This allowed us to change the size and style of the text that we used.
The second tool which I used was the image tool. This allowed me to drag simple picture designs onto the slides. This was good as it enabled us to show some creation skills. Looking back on the presentation I feel that it was simple to use but
also poor. and there aren’t many tools or effects. Although ‘Slides’ didn’t give me a variety of effects, the software is very easy and simple to use. This is because there aren’t many tools making it easy to understand and not to complex.
